No contemporary evidence cited here shows that Kevin James’ salary caused The King of Queens to end. Reports from 2007 describe the sitcom as concluding after nine seasons as James stepped away while a film career was developing. They do not report a salary dispute or identify his pay as the reason.

What was reported when the show ended?

In an Associated Press interview published by CBS News on April 9, 2007, James said the series would end the following month and reflected on its nine-year run. “You know, when they tapped us on the shoulder and we looked up, it was nine years later,” he said. He also recalled that the ending did not feel real until the final episode was being filmed. The interview gives no salary explanation. CBS News / Associated Press, April 9, 2007.

An April 4, 2007 Associated Press report said James, with a film career looming, had decided to step down as “King.” James was quoted as saying, “All good things must end and unfortunately this is.” The report described the sitcom as a consistent CBS success and a strong performer in syndication; it did not attribute the ending to his compensation. The Spokesman-Review / Associated Press, April 4, 2007.

Was the series canceled over his pay?

The contemporary coverage cited here does not substantiate that claim. It provides no salary figure, no account of a salary ultimatum, and no statement that CBS canceled the series because James was paid too much. That is a limit on what these reports establish—not proof that compensation was never discussed privately.

It is also more precise to say the show ended than to state that a salary dispute caused it to be canceled. A May 2007 TV Guide feature described the finale after nine seasons. James said the network let the show do its own thing, a comment about the working relationship rather than his pay. TV Guide, May 14, 2007.

What does the audience figure tell us?

The April 2007 AP report put the show’s audience at 8.7 million viewers per week. That is a contemporary figure reported by AP, not a full ratings history or evidence of CBS’s private reason for ending the series. The same report’s description of syndication success adds context about the show’s performance, but it does not establish a salary-based decision.
