Reports published in 2024 said former England striker Emile Heskey had been declared bankrupt after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) pursued a tax dispute. Those reports also linked the case to a historic media estimate that Heskey was worth £12 million—but that figure was never established as his verified net worth. The case details and amounts below are reported figures, not independently confirmed court records.

Was Emile Heskey declared bankrupt?

Yes, according to 2024 reporting. A Credit Protection Association roundup, attributing its account to the Daily Star, said HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition in January 2024 and that Heskey was declared bankrupt that year. The roundup is secondary reporting; no underlying court judgment or name-specific Insolvency Service record was available to verify those details independently. Credit Protection Association

What amounts were reported?

The same 2024 roundup reported an unpaid tax liability of more than £1.64 million and legal costs of about £195,000. These are figures attributed to that account of the case, not primary figures independently checked against court documents. It also gave 19 August 2025 as the expected discharge date; that date should be treated as reported, rather than as a verified register entry. Credit Protection Association

Was Heskey’s net worth really £12 million?

The £12 million figure was a media estimate for Heskey’s fortune around 2009, cited in a 2024 Pulse Sports Nigeria feature. The article did not provide a valuation method or supporting financial records. It is therefore more accurate to call it a historic estimate than a confirmed net worth: it does not establish what assets Heskey owned, what liabilities he had, or his financial position when the bankruptcy was reported. How can you check an individual bankruptcy record?

For England and Wales, the Insolvency Service’s Individual Insolvency Register is the official public lookup for bankruptcy orders, debt relief orders and individual voluntary arrangements. Search the register by name. The Insolvency Service says a record may remain available for up to three months after discharge or completion, so a missing entry does not by itself prove there was never a case. The search for this article did not surface a name-specific result for Heskey. Search the Individual Insolvency Register · Insolvency Service guidance on its registers

Do Heskey’s company filings explain the reported bankruptcy?

Companies House lists Emile Heskey Promotions Limited as active, with a proposal to strike off and overdue filings, and identifies Heskey as holding 75% or more of the company. These are separate company records. They do not establish the cause of a personal insolvency or show that the company’s status led to the reported bankruptcy.
