Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo pay off a closed-end loan, ask your current lender or servicer for the amount due on the date you plan to pay, follow its payment instructions, and confirm the account is satisfied. A statement balance or displayed principal may not be enough: the date-specific payoff can include accrued interest, fees, or charges.
What paying off a closed-end loan means
Closed-end credit is a loan for a specific transaction with repayment terms set out in the agreement. Paying it off means satisfying the obligation under that agreement; it does not mean every loan has the same payment allocation, payoff procedure, or confirmation document.
With an amortizing loan, scheduled payments generally cover amounts due for fees and interest before the remaining payment reduces principal. For auto loans, the CFPB says fees due are generally covered first, then interest due, with the remainder applied to principal. Check your statement and loan documents, or ask the servicer, to see how your own payments were applied. CFPB guidance on auto-loan payment application and payment allocation details.
How to pay off a loan accurately
- Identify the current lender or servicer. Use your latest statement and loan documents. The company collecting payments may differ from the dealer or original point of sale.
- Review the agreement. Check the interest method, fees, payoff provisions, and any prepayment penalty. For auto loans, early payoff terms can depend on both the contract and state law.
- Request a payoff amount for your intended payment date. Ask how long the quote is valid, which payment channels and delivery details to use, and how payment must be credited by the required date. Verify these instructions with your institution; procedures vary.
- Pay as instructed and keep proof. Retain the payment confirmation. Check the account status afterward or contact the servicer if it does not show the debt as paid in full.
- Check any collateral release. For secured debt, follow the process that applies to the collateral and jurisdiction. If you paid off a mortgage, check state property records to confirm the lien release has been recorded; it may take time to appear.
Why the payoff amount can differ from the balance
A balance shown on a statement or online may not be the amount required to close the loan on a later date. For auto loans, the CFPB says a payoff figure can differ because of interest calculation, outstanding fees or charges, or other reasons. Requesting the figure for the date you expect to pay helps account for the lender’s calculation and the account’s current status. CFPB guidance on auto-loan payoff amounts.

Simple interest and precomputed interest
Interest method matters, particularly if you pay early. With a simple-interest auto loan, interest is based on the outstanding balance over time. With precomputed interest, expected interest is calculated at the outset and distributed across payments. The CFPB says a borrower who pays a precomputed-interest loan early may ultimately pay more interest than with a simple-interest loan, though a refund of some unearned interest may be available. The contract and the lender’s calculation determine the amount for an individual account. CFPB explanation of auto-loan interest methods.
Fees and payment timing
Principal alone may not include amounts due under the agreement, such as accrued interest, late fees, or other charges. A payoff quote is tied to a date, so ask the servicer how to ensure the payment arrives or is credited in time and whether a revised quote is needed if your plans change.

What to check before paying early
Do not assume that early repayment is penalty-free. For auto loans, the CFPB says prepayment terms depend on the loan contract and state law. Read the agreement and check applicable state requirements before relying on an assumption about a penalty. CFPB guidance on early auto-loan payoff.
If you are comparing the regular schedule with a lump-sum payoff, the relevant factors supported by the loan terms are the interest method and resulting interest, any applicable prepayment penalty, and fees or accrued charges in the date-specific quote. Whether using cash for an early payoff makes sense also depends on your financial circumstances; a loan payoff quote alone cannot answer that.

Why procedures differ by loan type
Closed-end credit is a broad category, not a single standardized payoff process. Regulation Z materials distinguish closed-end from open-end credit, while CFPB payday-loan guidance addresses particular short-term and balloon-payment products. Those product-specific rules should not be treated as a description of all installment loans. Read the documents for your specific loan and ask its servicer how payoff and any payment authorization work. Regulation Z and CFPB Payday Lending Rule materials.
Auto-loan guidance is useful for understanding amortization, payment allocation, interest methods, and payoff quotes; mortgage guidance addresses recording a lien release after payoff. These examples illustrate why the steps depend on the product and collateral, rather than establishing one universal timeline or confirmation document for every closed-end loan.
