When PerthNow reported on March 3, 2023, Lotterywest was still waiting to hear from the holder of a ticket worth $40 million from the March 2 Powerball draw. The ticket had been sold in Perth’s metropolitan area, was not registered with Lotterywest’s Player’s Registration Service, and its holder had not contacted the lottery operator. The available reporting does not establish whether the prize was later claimed.
What was known about the $40 million ticket?
PerthNow reported that the ticket won the $40 million Powerball Division One prize in the March 2, 2023 draw. Lotterywest said it believed the ticket belonged to one person, not a syndicate. Because it was not registered, Lotterywest could not identify the holder through its Player’s Registration Service; the operator was waiting for the winner to check the ticket and get in touch. PerthNow’s March 3, 2023 report describes the status at that time, not the ticket’s present claim status.
How the win compares with other major WA prizes
The $40 million prize was among several large WA wins reported in the period, but it was not the record. The amounts below reflect the reports’ descriptions of prizes or WA shares; they are not all equivalent jackpot structures.
| Prize | Draw or timing | What the amount represents | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| $80,000,000 | December 2021 | Powerball prize shared by 55 women from a northern suburbs gym; Lotterywest identified it in February 2026 as the largest lottery prize won by a WA Lotto ticket. | Lotterywest, February 2026 |
| $63,309,056 | February 24, 2022 | WA’s share of a Powerball jackpot, as reported by PerthNow in 2023. | PerthNow, 2023 |
| $53,333,333 | October 27, 2022 | WA’s share of a Powerball jackpot, as reported by PerthNow in 2023. | PerthNow, 2023 |
| $40,000,000 | March 2, 2023 | Powerball Division One prize; Lotterywest believed one ticket holder held the winning ticket. | PerthNow, March 3, 2023 |
| $25,000,000 | January 27, 2022 | WA Oz Lotto Division One win, as reported by PerthNow in 2023. | PerthNow, 2023 |
Lotterywest’s February 2026 account confirms the $80 million shared Powerball prize as the largest lottery prize won by a WA Lotto ticket. Its spokesperson Zoe Wender said: “It would be fantastic to see another group of players share a life-changing prize just like the 55 women and their families who have no doubt been making the most of their shared $80 million prize over the past four years,”

What Lotterywest said about the jackpot run
In the 2023 report, Lotterywest chief executive Ralph Addis said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have yet another Western Australian winning ticket and our first division one Powerball win for the year,”
Addis also said the jackpot run had raised more than $6.4 million for the Western Australian community through Lotterywest’s grants program. He described the community benefit this way: “When WA players win, the entire WA community benefits.” The $6.4 million figure is Addis’s claim in the March 2023 report, not a current cumulative total.
