A privately held painting identified as Rembrandt’s Adoration of the Magi came to light after it fell from a wall in a Roman home in 2016. Experts presented the attribution publicly in 2021. But the often-repeated “$240 million” figure is not a sale price or a verified current appraisal: it was headline wording for a reported estimate, while another outlet described a conditional valuation range.
How the painting was found
In 2016, a painting hanging in a Roman family’s home or country house fell from the wall and its frame was damaged. It was sent for restoration. During work that included cleaning, restorer Antonella Di Francesco recognized that it might be the long-lost original rather than a copy.

The work depicts the biblical Adoration of the Magi. It is described as oil on paper applied to canvas, measures about 54 by 44.5 centimeters, and is dated circa 1632–33. Those details matter: calling it simply an oil-on-canvas painting leaves out its paper support. ANSA reported that the original had been considered lost, although copies were known in St Petersburg and Gothenburg. ANSA’s June 2021 report describes the object and its discovery.
What experts concluded—and what is established publicly
The attribution was presented at a Rome symposium at Villa Medici in June 2021, organized with the Fondazione Patrimonio Italia. The experts involved concluded that the painting was by Rembrandt; that is the attribution announced at the time, not proof of universal scholarly agreement. The available reporting establishes restoration and expert study, but does not lay out a full technical case or establish a later independent catalogue reassessment. ANSA and UPI’s June 2021 coverage report the announcement and discovery.

So, “authentic” needs a qualification: the 2021 experts announced it as a Rembrandt, but the cited reporting alone does not demonstrate that the attribution has since been independently resolved or accepted by all scholars.
Does the painting really sell for $240 million?
No sale at that price is documented in the cited reports. Artnet News used “up to $240 million” in its June 2021 headline; that wording is a headline estimate, not evidence of a transaction or an independently verified current appraisal. Artnet’s report should be read in that context.

ANSA reported a possible valuation of €70 million to €200 million if the Rembrandt attribution were confirmed. That was a conditional estimate, not a sale price. ANSA’s account makes the condition explicit. Neither figure establishes what the privately held work would fetch today, and an auction record for a different Rembrandt would not establish this painting’s value.

A separate Rembrandt attribution announced in March 2026 may account for some confusion. The Rijksmuseum said a two-year investigation supported attributing Vision of Zacharias in the Temple, dated 1633, to Rembrandt. That is a different painting from the Rome Adoration of the Magi, with a separate owner, investigation and announcement.
For the Zacharias painting, the Rijksmuseum described paint materials found in other Rembrandts of the period, comparable technique and layer build-up, compositional changes seen with macro-XRF and inspection, an original signature, and dendrochronological support for the date. The museum said the current owner contacted it, enabling examination for the first time in 65 years; the work is on long-term loan and went on view on 4 March 2026. Those technical findings apply to the Zacharias picture, not the Rome painting. See the Rijksmuseum announcement, its research story, and the Associated Press report.
