Was a Coca-Cola Employee Fired for Drinking Pepsi? What the 2003 Report Says

A 2003 report described a Coca-Cola truck driver’s reported dismissal after drinking Pepsi, but the union and company gave different accounts of the reason.

A June 2003 report said a Coca-Cola Bottling Company truck driver, Rick Bronson, was dismissed after he was seen drinking Pepsi while making a delivery. But that account reported competing claims, not a verified finding: Teamsters officials said his union activity was the real reason, while a company spokesperson denied retaliation. The available report does not establish why Bronson was fired or what happened to the union’s charges.

What happened in the 2003 report?

An AFP dispatch dated June 13, 2003, reproduced in an AnandTech forum thread the following day, concerned Rick Bronson, a Coca-Cola Bottling Company truck driver in Southern California. According to the dispatch, he was reportedly seen drinking Pepsi in a store back room while making a delivery and was dismissed. The account is available here as a forum repost rather than an employment record or an independently accessed AFP archive. Read the reproduced report.

Why was Bronson reportedly dismissed?

The dispatch presents the issue as a dispute, not a settled explanation. It says the union alleged the company invoked a rule against “slander” of its product. Teamsters officials argued instead that Bronson’s organizing activity motivated the dismissal.

Jim Santangelo, identified in the dispatch as a Teamsters local principal officer, was quoted as saying: “Coke is really grasping at straws on this one.” That is the union’s characterization, not an independent determination of the employer’s motive.

What did the company say?

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. spokesperson Bob Phillips declined to discuss the specific allegations, according to the reproduced dispatch. He said: “I can tell you that we have at this company a strict policy against retaliation and the company does not retaliate, nor do we tolerate any retaliation against employees.” That response records the company’s position; it does not resolve the disputed reason for Bronson’s dismissal.

Were there legal charges or a confirmed outcome?

The dispatch reported that Teamsters Local 848 had filed unfair-labor-practice charges. The material available here does not establish whether those charges were investigated, adjudicated, withdrawn, or otherwise resolved. It therefore cannot support a claim that a labor agency confirmed either side’s account.

Does this show Coca-Cola employees are banned from drinking Pepsi?

No company-wide ban is established by this account. It describes an alleged incident involving one worker during a delivery and reports a dispute over the stated reason for his dismissal. It does not authenticate a Coca-Cola-wide policy forbidding employees from drinking Pepsi, nor does it establish the terms of any workplace rule that may have applied to Bronson.

How is the separate 1987 case different?

A 1987 report described a different Coca-Cola bottling employee who claimed she was fired after becoming engaged to a Pepsi employee. That report concerned another person and another allegation, and said the matter ended in a settlement. It is not corroboration of Bronson’s 2003 case or evidence of the outcome of the charges reported against his employer. Read the 1987 report.
