The available official information document for Western Australia’s 2024 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards explains the categories, entry rules and schedule, but it does not identify the winners. That means the claim that regional towns “took the lead” cannot be confirmed from this source. Here is what the organizer’s document does establish.
What the awards recognize
Tourism Council WA’s program recognizes towns for their commitment to encouraging tourism and increasing visitation to their destination. The organizer’s 2024 information document describes three categories based on population.
| Category | Population band |
|---|---|
| Top Tourism Town | Over 5,000 |
| Small Tourism Town | 1,500–5,000 |
| Tiny Tourism Town | Below 1,500 |
The categories apply to geographical towns and population centres, not entire local government areas. The rules say entrants should use Australian Bureau of Statistics census data to select the category. Tourism Council WA’s 2024 awards information document also says nominations could be made by an accredited Visitor Information Centre or a local council.
What the 2024 schedule said
The organizer’s document set out these dates for the 2024 program:
#1 Best Overall
- Nominations closed on 22 February 2024.
- Submissions were due on 26 March 2024.
- Consumer voting was scheduled from 30 April to 22 May 2024.
- Winners were scheduled to be announced at the WA Tourism Conference on 11 June 2024.
These are the dates listed in the official program document, not confirmation that each event took place as scheduled.
What winners were due to receive
The information document says the winner in each category would proceed as a finalist in the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards. It also describes a $20,000 advertising prize package provided by 7NEWS for the Top Tourism Town winner.
Rank #2
Are the winners and regional lead confirmed?
No. The official information document establishes the award structure and planned process, but it does not name any winning towns or provide results that would substantiate a claim of regional dominance. Without a winner announcement or equivalent organizer record, it would be misleading to name winners or report that regional towns took the lead as fact.
