That is a dated, market-sensitive estimate—not a verified October 8 value or money Buffett holds as cash. Most of his estimated wealth is tied to Berkshire Hathaway stock.
Warren Buffett’s latest reported net worth
Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires data displayed an estimate of $143.6 billion for Buffett on October 7, 2026. Forbes México reported a $142 billion estimate on October 1, 2026. These are snapshots from a wealth-tracking system, not audited personal balance sheets; the figures should be read with their dates because Berkshire’s share price can move the estimate. Forbes Real-Time Billionaires and Forbes México’s October 1 report provide the respective figures.
The October 7 figure is the latest dated estimate located here. It should not be presented as an exact value for October 8 or as a guaranteed current intraday total.
What Buffett’s net worth consists of
The majority of Buffett’s estimated fortune comes from his ownership interest in Berkshire Hathaway, according to Bloomberg’s billionaire profile. That means his estimated wealth is closely linked to Berkshire’s publicly traded shares. It is not the same as Berkshire Hathaway’s market capitalization, company earnings, or the cash Buffett personally has available to spend.

Bloomberg says its billionaire index updates each business day and values publicly traded stakes using the latest closing prices. Forbes labels its number a real-time estimate. Different trackers can therefore show different figures because of snapshot timing, share-price inputs, holdings data, and calculation methods. A difference between estimates does not by itself establish that either tracker is wrong.
How donations have affected his Berkshire holdings
Berkshire Hathaway’s June 27, 2025 release said Buffett converted 8,239 Class A shares into 12,358,500 Class B shares and donated 12,358,321 of those Class B shares among five foundations. After the transaction, Berkshire reported that he held 198,117 Class A shares and 1,144 Class B shares. These are historical figures from that release, not a current share count. Berkshire Hathaway’s June 27, 2025 release includes the transaction details.
Rank #2
In the same release, Buffett said his remaining Class A shares were worth about $145 billion at that time and represented well over 99% of his net worth. That dated 2025 statement helps explain the concentration of his wealth, but it should not be substituted for a 2026 estimate.
Buffett described the sources of his wealth in that release: “Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire; a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth.” He also wrote that his will provides that about 99½% of his estate is destined for philanthropic use. The statement concerns planned estate philanthropy; it is not evidence that the assets have already been transferred.

Buffett’s current role at Berkshire
Berkshire Hathaway’s 2026 proxy states that Greg Abel became CEO on January 1, 2026, while Buffett continued as board chairman at the time of the proxy. Buffett’s personal wealth remains largely linked to Berkshire shares even though he no longer holds the CEO role. Berkshire Hathaway’s 2026 proxy describes the leadership change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why net-worth estimates change
- Share prices move. When the value of a publicly traded stake changes, a tracker’s estimate can change even if Buffett does not buy or sell shares that day.
- Trackers capture different snapshots. A real-time estimate and a figure based on the latest market close may reflect different moments.
- Holdings and gifts are dated. Company disclosures provide ownership information at a particular point in time, while trackers may incorporate updated holdings on different schedules.
For readers comparing estimates, the useful questions are who published the number, when it was captured, and how the tracker values public shares. Avoid comparing an undated figure with a dated snapshot or treating a reported estimate as a precise personal balance sheet.
