Did Robin Givens’s Divorce Decimate Mike Tyson’s Net Worth? What the Record Shows

The public record does not disclose the Tyson-Givens property settlement or quantify its effect on Tyson’s wealth. Later reports describe several financial pressures, not a proven divorce-driven collapse.

There is no reliable public evidence that Mike Tyson’s 1989 divorce from Robin Givens decimated his net worth. Contemporary reporting said their property agreement was secret, and no settlement amount or dependable before-and-after wealth figures are available in the cited sources. Givens said in 1988 that she would leave without taking money, but that statement does not establish the terms they ultimately agreed to.

What is known about the divorce settlement?

Tyson and Givens’s divorce became final in New Jersey in June 1989. The Los Angeles Times reported that the couple had reached “a secret agreement on the division of their property.” The report did not disclose the agreement’s terms or a dollar amount.

The earlier Dominican Republic divorce reported in February 1989 was not binding in New Jersey, where the couple had primarily resided, according to UPI’s contemporaneous account. The New Jersey finalization is therefore the relevant public milestone for the divorce, but it does not reveal how much either spouse received.

What did Robin Givens say about taking money?

In October 1988, Givens said she would complete the divorce without taking money from Tyson. Her lawyer’s statement, reported by The Washington Post, included her words: “I never married Michael for money.” This is evidence of her public position at that time, not proof of the eventual legal settlement. The later account of a secret property agreement leaves its final terms unknown.

Why a fight purse does not answer the net-worth question

Tyson’s earnings were substantial, but one reported payday cannot establish his total wealth or the effect of a divorce. UPI reported that he earned more than $20 million for knocking out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds in 1988. That figure is a reported purse for one fight—not a net-worth estimate, a record of assets after expenses, or an amount paid to Givens.

What happened to Tyson’s finances later?

Tyson filed for bankruptcy in 2003. A Biography.com biography updated November 11, 2024 describes spending, multiple trials, and bad investments among the circumstances that caught up with him. Retrospective coverage by The Washington Post in 2004 also discussed excessive spending and cited $2 million for a bathtub for Givens. That reported purchase is an example of spending, not evidence of a divorce payout.

These accounts concern financial pressures over time. They do not quantify the divorce’s share of Tyson’s later financial decline or establish that the settlement caused his bankruptcy. A separate 2003 report about Tyson’s divorce from Monica Turner is a different marriage and should not be confused with the Givens divorce: The Washington Post reported that divorce separately.

Can the divorce’s financial impact be calculated?

Not from the cited public record. The settlement was confidential, and the sources do not provide reliable net-worth figures for Tyson immediately before and after the 1989 divorce. Present-day celebrity-net-worth estimates are not audited historical balance sheets and cannot fill that gap. The defensible conclusion is limited: the divorce occurred, its property terms were kept secret, and Tyson later went bankrupt amid multiple reported financial pressures. The claim that the Givens divorce decimated his net worth is unproven.
