Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, Avalanche, XRP and Litecoin are an editorial shortlist—not a ranking, recommendation or forecast. The SEC names them as examples of crypto assets in its 2026 educational guidance; that list does not show they are the best long-term investments.
What would it take to turn $1,000 into $100,000?
It would take a 100-fold increase in the value of the investment, before accounting for fees, taxes or other costs. That arithmetic describes the target, not its likelihood. The official sources available for this article do not establish a probability, expected timeline or dependable strategy for reaching it.
Crypto assets are volatile, and an investor can lose money. A long holding period does not guarantee a gain or protect an investment from a steep decline. Treat the $100,000 figure as a hypothetical goal—not an expected outcome or a reason to invest money you cannot afford to lose.
Which eight crypto assets are on this shortlist?
The following assets appear among examples in the SEC’s 2026 crypto-asset educational guidance. The order below is for identification only; it is not a ranking.

The SEC’s examples support identifying these assets, not judging their investment quality. The available official material does not provide a like-for-like comparison of their use, network design and security, token supply, liquidity, governance, custody options or prospective returns. It therefore cannot substantiate a claim that any one—or all eight—are the “best” cryptos for a long-term investor.
How should you compare crypto assets before investing?
Do not treat a familiar name, a regulator’s illustrative list or a past price rise as a substitute for evaluating the asset and the risks. For each asset you are considering, look for current, reliable information on the same questions:

- Purpose and actual use: What is the network or asset intended to do, and what evidence shows that people use it?
- Network design and security: How does the network operate, and what is known about its security record and resilience?
- Supply and issuance: How are tokens issued, and what could change the available supply over time?
- Liquidity and concentration: How readily can the asset be bought or sold, and how concentrated is ownership or control?
- Governance and upgrades: Who can propose or implement changes, and how are those decisions made?
- Regulatory and jurisdictional uncertainty: What rules may apply to the asset and the transactions you plan to make?
- Access and custody: What ways to hold or gain exposure are available where you live, and what risks come with each?
Evidence can be incomplete or change. If you cannot verify an answer, treat that as uncertainty—not as proof that the risk is absent.
How does U.S. crypto regulation affect the decision?
In a March 17, 2026 interpretation, the SEC addressed how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. The CFTC joined the interpretation for its administration of the Commodity Exchange Act. The SEC’s April 22, 2026 educational material gives examples of crypto assets, but neither an example list nor the interpretation makes the legal treatment of every asset or transaction universally settled.

Regulatory treatment can depend on the asset and the transaction. This is U.S. guidance, not a statement of the law in every country. Check current official guidance for your jurisdiction and consider getting qualified legal or tax advice if the treatment matters to your decision.
Should you buy crypto directly or use an exchange-traded product?
These are different ways to get exposure, with different responsibilities and risks. Investor.gov’s September 2024 bulletin discusses bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs); it does not establish that an equivalent product exists for every token or in every jurisdiction.

| Direct ownership | You may need to choose how to hold the asset and manage its public and private cryptographic keys. Losing control of relevant keys can create risks distinct from price movements. Check the custody arrangements and recovery process before using a wallet. |
| Exchange-traded product | An ETP can provide bitcoin or ether price exposure without some risks of directly transacting on a crypto platform or handling cryptographic keys. A hardware wallet is an optional physical tool for people who choose self-custody. It is not a cryptocurrency, an investment or a price hedge, and it does not guarantee protection from loss or theft.

There is no one-size-fits-all allocation. Investor.gov cautions readers about crypto-asset securities and notes that a suitable investment allocation can vary with a person’s time horizon and risk tolerance. Consider whether a loss would interfere with essential expenses or financial goals, and how much volatility you can withstand. Do not assume that holding several crypto assets removes the risks of the crypto market.
