The extra $70 does not buy more Word, Excel, OneDrive storage, users, or device support. It mainly buys higher Copilot limits and a handful of advanced AI features.
For most households, that makes Microsoft 365 Family the sensible default. Premium is worth considering only if the subscription owner regularly uses Microsoft’s most demanding AI tools.
Premium does not give you a bigger Microsoft 365 bundle
The key comparison is not Premium versus a stripped-down Office plan. Microsoft 365 Family already includes the core package most people are looking for:
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and related Microsoft 365 apps
- Desktop, web, and mobile access
- Support for PCs, Macs, phones, and tablets
- Sharing with up to five other people
- 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person, or up to 6 TB total
- Microsoft Defender and other security features
- Copilot features and AI image tools, subject to usage limits
Premium has the same maximum of six people and the same 1 TB-per-person storage allocation. It does not add extra Office applications or increase the number of devices each person can use.

The price difference is entirely about AI for most buyers
| Plan | Annual price | People | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $99.99 | 1 | 1 TB |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $129.99 | Up to 6 | 1 TB per person, up to 6 TB |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $199.99 | Up to 6 | 1 TB per person, up to 6 TB |
Premium is $70 more per year than Family, or $7 more per month when paid monthly. That is a substantial premium for a plan that does not improve the ordinary Office and storage benefits.
Microsoft may advertise a discounted introductory price. For a proper household-budget comparison, use the normal renewal price. A low first-year offer does not make Premium good value if the subscription automatically renews at $199.99.
Family’s Copilot is enough for casual use
Family subscribers already receive Copilot access and AI image-generation features with usage limits. That is generally sufficient if you use Copilot to:
- Rewrite an occasional email
- Summarize a document
- Brainstorm ideas in Word
- Ask questions about a spreadsheet
- Create an occasional image or presentation concept
Premium raises those limits and adds access to features such as Researcher and Analyst. It also includes higher allowances for voice, vision, audio overviews, image generation, and agent tasks. Microsoft’s current limits table lists Premium with 25 agent tasks per month and up to 15 minutes of Vision and 60 minutes of Voice per day, compared with lower allowances on Personal and Family.

The biggest catch: you cannot share the AI benefits
Microsoft 365 Family and Premium can both be shared with five additional people, but the subscription’s AI benefits are not shared in the same way as the apps and storage.
The account owner receives the subscription’s Copilot benefits. People invited to the family group can use the shared Microsoft 365 apps and their own OneDrive storage, but they do not receive the owner’s Premium Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Designer.
This matters financially. A household paying $199.99 for Premium is not buying six Premium AI memberships. It is buying one owner’s higher AI allowance alongside the same family Office package that costs $129.99.

Family is the better choice if any of these describe your situation:
- You mainly want Office apps and OneDrive storage.
- Two or more people need Microsoft 365.
- Only one household member uses Copilot occasionally.
- You do not need Researcher, Analyst, or Premium agent limits.
- You generate AI images infrequently.
- You would rather keep the extra $70 for another household expense.
For a single user, Microsoft 365 Personal is cheaper still at $99.99 per year. It includes 1 TB of storage and Copilot access for one person, so paying for Family only makes sense if you need to share the plan or want the higher household storage ceiling.

When Premium can be worth paying for
Premium is not automatically a bad purchase. It can make sense when the account owner uses Copilot as a frequent work or research tool rather than an occasional convenience.
Consider Premium if you regularly:
- Use Researcher or Analyst for substantial projects.
- Generate or edit many AI images.
- Use Copilot Voice or Vision enough to reach Family’s lower limits.
- Build workflows around Copilot agents.
- Need the highest available limits and early access to Premium-focused AI features.
- Previously paid separately for Copilot Pro and want a combined consumer Microsoft 365 subscription.
Before upgrading, check whether the feature you want is actually available in your account. Microsoft’s documentation has listed Photos Agent as “coming soon,” so it should not be treated as an immediately available benefit simply because it appears in a comparison table.

Do not treat “extensive” AI use as unlimited
Premium’s higher allowances are still limits. Microsoft says usage can vary by feature, entry point, and system conditions, and that limits may change as new AI models become available.
AI credits can also be consumed across Microsoft 365 and Windows applications, including Word, Excel, Designer, Paint, Photos, Notepad, and other experiences. An action such as asking Copilot to summarize an inbox can use an AI credit.
That means Premium is best viewed as a plan with more generous access, not as an unlimited AI subscription. If you are upgrading because you expect unrestricted image generation or agent use, read Microsoft’s current AI credits and limits documentation first.

Practical issues that can make Copilot seem broken
Excel requires AutoSave
Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave to be enabled, and the workbook must be saved to OneDrive. It will not work properly with an unsaved workbook stored only on your computer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →AI features may have age restrictions
Microsoft applies minimum-age rules to some AI features, and the exact requirement can vary by region. Someone who is eligible to use the Microsoft 365 subscription may still be unable to use every Copilot feature.
Copilot may not appear immediately
If Copilot is missing from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, or Outlook, update Microsoft 365, confirm that the app is signed in with the account that owns the subscription, and restart the applications. Buying Premium is not always the fix for an account or software-update problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check or change your subscription
For a subscription bought directly from Microsoft:
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Review the available options for changing the plan, managing sharing, turning recurring billing off, or cancelling.
For a downgrade, the documented route is Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions → current subscription → Manage → Cancel subscription. Microsoft may offer a cheaper alternative during the cancellation process. A downgrade normally continues on the existing plan until it expires rather than switching immediately.
Be careful when upgrading before your current plan ends. Microsoft’s current conversion table says that moving from Family to Premium converts 78% of the remaining Family time. For example, 100 days left on Family would become approximately 78 days on Premium. The precise result depends on the subscriptions involved.
Best Value
If you bought Microsoft 365 through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer, plan changes, cancellation, and refunds generally have to be handled through that provider rather than Microsoft.
Common claims that should not guide your decision
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “You need Premium to get Copilot.” | Personal and Family include Copilot features, with lower limits than Premium. |
| “Premium gives every family member Premium Copilot.” | The AI benefits belong to the subscription owner; sharing does not extend them to everyone. |
| “Premium includes more OneDrive storage.” | Family and Premium both provide up to 6 TB total, allocated as 1 TB per person. |
| “Premium is Microsoft 365 Business Premium.” | They are different products. Business Premium is a business plan with separate administration, identity, email, and security features. |
| “Premium means unlimited AI.” | It provides higher allowances, not a permanent promise of unlimited use. |
FAQ
Is Microsoft 365 Premium worth $70 more than Family?
Usually not. Family includes the same core Office apps, six-person sharing, and up to 6 TB of OneDrive storage. Premium is worth the extra $70 per year mainly for a heavy Copilot user who needs Researcher, Analyst, higher AI limits, or Premium-focused features.
Does everyone on Microsoft 365 Family or Premium get Copilot?
No. Microsoft says the subscription owner receives the Copilot subscription benefits. Other family members can use the shared apps and storage, but they do not receive the owner’s Premium AI benefits.
Is Microsoft 365 Personal cheaper than Family?
Yes. The current US price is $99.99 per year for Personal versus $129.99 for Family. Personal is designed for one user and includes 1 TB of storage.
Can I downgrade from Premium to Family immediately?
A downgrade generally takes effect when the current subscription expires. Visit account.microsoft.com/services, select Manage beside the subscription, and follow the cancellation or plan-change options. If you bought through a third party, manage the subscription through that retailer or app store.
The Bottom Line
Choose Microsoft 365 Family if you want the normal Office, OneDrive, security, and occasional-Copilot package. Choose Personal if you are the only user. Pay for Premium only when the account owner will genuinely use its higher AI limits or Premium-only tools often enough to justify $70 more each year—and remember that the extra AI benefits are not shared with the rest of the family.
