That $10 billion figure is GeekWire’s calculation from Walmart’s reported results, not a sales total Walmart itself announced. The milestone was real, but it is six years old. The most recent U.S. figures Walmart has reported are growth rates for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, and they show the online business still expanding quickly.
What the $10 billion milestone measured
The 2020 headline captured a pandemic-era surge in online grocery and household shopping. The growth figure (97%) is the one Walmart reported for its fiscal second quarter. The dollar figure is GeekWire’s arithmetic applied to Walmart’s financial results, so it should be attributed to GeekWire, not presented as a Walmart announcement.
Two points matter when you read the 2020 number today:
- It is a quarterly figure, not an annual one. “$10 billion” describes one quarter of sales, so it cannot be compared directly with annual retail totals.
- It is also a share-of-sales milestone. GeekWire placed online sales at more than 11% of Walmart U.S. net sales for that quarter.
How the growth has continued
Walmart reports U.S. ecommerce growth by quarter, and the latest two quarters of fiscal 2027 show the business still growing at a double-digit pace. The table below lists the reported percentages. The available source does not establish a current absolute U.S. ecommerce dollar total, so readers should treat these as growth rates rather than sales levels.

Both quarters come from Walmart Inc.’s fiscal 2027 quarterly results presentations. Ecommerce growth eased slightly from the first quarter to the second, while Marketplace sales growth edged up.
Stores as the delivery network
Walmart says its stores support online fulfillment, and store-fulfilled delivery grew about 43% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027.

The 37% figure needs careful reading. Walmart reported that about 37% of store-fulfilled orders were expedited deliveries under three hours. That is a share of store-fulfilled orders, not a share of all U.S. ecommerce orders, so it cannot be used to estimate how many total online orders arrive that quickly.
Walmart+ and the Prime comparison
The 2020 headline framed Walmart’s membership as a challenge to Amazon Prime. Walmart+ remains the company’s paid membership. The figures below are from Walmart’s membership pages, accessed October 8, 2026. Membership prices and benefits change, so confirm them on Walmart’s site before you sign up.

Walmart+ is listed at $98 per year or $12.95 per month. Spread over twelve months, the annual plan works out to about $8.17 a month, so it is the lower-cost option for a member who expects to stay for most of a year.
Delivery terms
Free store delivery generally requires a $35 order. Free shipping applies to eligible items sold or shipped by Walmart and has no order minimum, but it has exceptions. Marketplace items and oversized items are excluded from the general free-shipping offer, so a membership does not guarantee free delivery on every item in an order.

Questions to answer before choosing
- Do you order groceries or household staples often enough that a $35 store-delivery minimum is easy to meet?
- Do most of your orders come from Walmart itself, or from third-party Marketplace sellers that fall outside the free-shipping offer?
- Would you use the fuel savings, pharmacy delivery, or streaming choice, and can you meet each benefit’s registration and restriction terms?
- Does the annual price of $98 beat paying $12.95 monthly, given how long you expect to stay a member?
