Walmart announced Walmart Rewards on August 24, 2022, as a way for Walmart+ members to earn a digital balance from eligible, clipped product offers and use it toward later Walmart purchases. That original offer system is not the same as the current Walmart+ benefit of 5% cash back on qualifying Walmart purchases with a linked OnePay CashRewards World Mastercard. The two use different earning rules, reward balances and terms.
How Walmart Rewards worked for Walmart+ members
At launch, Walmart described Rewards as an item-specific offer program, not a flat percentage back on every purchase. Members could find eligible offers while searching for products on Walmart.com or in the Walmart app, clip an offer, and buy the qualifying item. Rewards accumulated in a digital Walmart wallet. Walmart said the offers were powered by the Ibotta Performance Network and exclusive to Walmart+ members at that time. Walmart’s August 24, 2022 announcement did not promise that every item had an offer or specify a universal earning rate.

Walmart said members could apply the accrued balance at checkout toward future purchases both in stores and online. Its launch announcement illustrated the idea with a member using $10 in rewards to reduce a $25 basket to $15. That was an example, not an average saving or a standard offer.
How the current Walmart+ 5% cash-back benefit differs
Walmart’s current terms tie the 5% benefit to payment with a OnePay CashRewards World Mastercard linked to a Walmart+ membership. For a qualifying Walmart purchase, the card earns OnePay Points equal to 5% of each dollar spent; the member must still have Walmart+ when the purchase settles. The terms limit this benefit to one participant per Walmart+ membership. See Walmart+ terms for conditions and exclusions.

The card information also lists 3% back at Walmart for nonmembers and 1.5% on other purchases. It describes redemption as cash into a OnePay Cash account or a statement credit. These are card benefits subject to issuer terms, eligibility and exclusions; consult the OnePay CashRewards card information and its current disclosures for full details.
Walmart transactions that do not qualify
The 5% rate is not a blanket rate for every transaction connected with Walmart. The terms exclude purchases at affiliates such as Sam’s Club; purchases from third-party entities inside Walmart stores or gas stations; purchases from third-party merchants on Walmart.com or in the Walmart app; and Expedia bookings through Walmart+ Travel when Walmart is not the merchant of record. Review the live terms for the precise definition of eligible purchases.

Walmart Rewards and OnePay: the practical differences

Because the 2022 program used changing item offers and the current card benefit uses a stated rate for qualifying purchases, comparing them as if both paid the same percentage would be misleading.
Other Walmart+ savings are separate benefits
Walmart+ Travel is a separate program. In its June 10, 2026 announcement, Walmart said members could earn up to 10% Walmart Cash on eligible hotels, car rentals and activities, and 2% on flights. Those travel-booking rates should not be confused with the original Walmart Rewards item offers or the OnePay card’s standard Walmart earn rate. Read Walmart’s Travel announcement for its scope.

- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.

Fuel savings are another distinct Walmart+ perk. Walmart’s September 14, 2026 announcement said the benefit had added CITGO locations. It reported $109 average annual gas savings for members who had at least 12 months of membership and used Gas Savings at least once weekly during March 2025–March 2026. That figure describes this defined group and period, not earnings from Walmart Rewards. In the announcement, Deepak Maini, Senior Vice President and GM, Walmart+, said, “A membership has to earn its place in a household budget.” See Walmart’s fuel-savings announcement.

- For an item offer, confirm that the specific product is eligible and that the offer is clipped before purchase; the 2022 launch description did not make offers universal.
- For the 5% card benefit, check that the OnePay card is linked to the correct Walmart+ membership and review current eligibility, settlement and exclusion terms.
- Check the applicable redemption rules: the 2022 Walmart Rewards balance and OnePay Points are different reward types with different described uses.
Walmart’s 2022 announcement establishes how Walmart Rewards was introduced, while current card terms describe the separate OnePay-linked benefit. Offers, rates and eligibility can change, so use Walmart’s live terms and card disclosures for current conditions.
