No—not across the board. Walmart has expanded targeted price reductions and temporary Rollback offers on selected items, but the available evidence does not show that its U.S. food prices, or the cost of a typical shopping basket, have returned to pre-inflation levels. A viral post making that claim was explicitly rejected by Walmart.
What Walmart’s price changes actually mean
Walmart distinguishes its ongoing pricing approach from item-specific promotions. Its corporate pricing page describes Every Day Low Price (EDLP) as a continuing strategy and Rollbacks as targeted reductions on selected items.
Walmart says its U.S. Rollbacks numbered more than 11,000 at the end of Q2, up from 7,200 at the end of Q1. Those figures count offers; they do not indicate that every grocery price fell, or show how much the cost of a full basket changed. The corporate page does not establish a basket-wide return to any earlier price level.
Inflation is not the same as a price level
When inflation slows, prices are generally still rising, just more slowly. That is different from prices falling or returning to what they were before an earlier period of inflation. To establish a broad return, shoppers would need a consistent price comparison for the same basket over time. The cited Walmart information reports pricing actions and offer counts, not such a historical U.S. basket series.

Where the “pre-inflation” claim came from
In February 2025, a social-media post claimed Walmart was lowering all food prices back to pre-inflation rates. Lead Stories reported that Walmart spokesperson Tricia Moriarty said: “While Walmart is always working to keep prices low, this announcement is not accurate and the post did not come from Walmart.” The post should not be treated as a Walmart announcement.
What the Rollback figures do—and do not—show
Walmart’s current corporate page reports more than 11,000 U.S. Rollbacks by the end of Q2, compared with 7,200 at the end of Q1. These are counts of selected offers, not a percentage reduction in the price of a typical grocery basket. They also do not tell shoppers how much any particular item costs now or how that price compares with a specific pre-inflation date.

Earlier reporting provides context, but not a current price measure. The Associated Press reported in May 2024 that Walmart had expanded temporary Rollbacks to nearly 7,000 grocery items. In that report, CEO Doug McMillon said: “We’re going to lead on price, and we’re going to manage our (profit) margins, and we’re going to be the Walmart that we’ve always been.” The report described temporary offers, not a permanent reduction across all groceries.
On Walmart’s August 15, 2024 Q2 FY25 buyside call, CFO John David Rainey said Rollbacks were supporting unit growth and share gains. He also discussed vendor responses to pressure to lower prices and private-label products as an alternative. Those comments describe the company’s pricing efforts at that time; they do not establish that all prices fell or that a typical basket returned to an earlier level.

Keep Walmart Canada’s announcement separate
Walmart Canada announced on June 16, 2025 that it had lowered everyday prices on hundreds of items since February. Its examples included produce, bathroom tissue, water, cheese, ground beef and shampoo. That announcement concerns Canada, not a U.S.-wide price change.
Walmart Canada also estimated savings of more than $450 per year for a Canadian family of four. The company said its comparison used NielsenIQ’s annual average Canadian family-of-four grocery and personal-care spend of $8,512.61 as of April 19, 2025, together with Walmart’s available assortment. This is a company estimate using that Canadian methodology, not a measured U.S. household saving.

How to judge whether your own grocery bill is falling
A Rollback can lower the price of an item you buy, but the effect on your spending depends on the offer, how long it lasts and what else is in your basket. For a useful personal comparison, use the same items and quantities in both periods; otherwise changes in brands, package sizes or shopping habits can obscure whether prices changed.

- Compare unit prices, such as price per ounce or per pound, rather than shelf prices alone.
- Keep quantities and package sizes consistent when comparing receipts.
- Note whether a lower price is a temporary Rollback or the item’s everyday price.
- Separate changes in what you bought from changes in the prices of the same products.
