The headline’s “16,000 pounds” is a rounded figure. The recall covered specific package types and lot codes, not all beef sold at Walmart. The FSIS record shows the recall as closed on May 30, 2024, so this is a historical event, not a live alert.
What the recall covered
On May 1, 2024, FSIS announced that Cargill Meat Solutions was recalling approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products. The agency classified the action as Class I, the category it uses for the highest-risk situations, and listed nationwide distribution. Contemporaneous news coverage described the products as sold at Walmart. The agency’s notice, not a retailer listing, is the authoritative description of which products were affected.
The risk identified was possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7, a strain of bacteria that can cause serious illness. The products were produced April 26 and 27, 2024.
Which packages were included
The FSIS notice lists six product descriptions, all packed in plastic-wrapped trays. Every item carries establishment number EST. 86P on the back of the label. Only the combinations below were named in the notice.

The recall was defined by the combination of product name, package size, lot code, and establishment number. A package with a similar name but a different lot code or a different size was outside the notice as written.
How to check a package
- Find the product name, net weight, and lot code on the package label. Compare them line by line with the table above and with the full FSIS notice.
- Turn the package over and look for establishment number EST. 86P on the back of the label.
- Check the production dates. The FSIS notice lists products made April 26 and 27, 2024.
- If all of these details match, do not eat or cook the product. Follow the disposal or return guidance in the FSIS notice, and keep the package until you have decided how to handle it.
- If any detail differs, the package was not named in this recall.
Where to verify and where not to rely
- Primary source: the FSIS recall notice lists the complete product descriptions and labels. The agency’s recalls and alerts page and the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline, 1-888-674-6854, cover meat, poultry, and egg product recalls.
- Retailer listings: Walmart says its recall listings are not all-inclusive, so a retailer page should not be the only check.
- Text messages: Walmart says it does not send text messages about product recalls. Treat unsolicited recall texts as unverified until you confirm them with FSIS.
- Scope: the recall does not extend to all Walmart beef, to other Cargill products, or to ground beef bought from other sources. Nothing in the notice supports that wider reading.
Status and what remains unknown
FSIS lists the recall as closed on May 30, 2024. A closed recall means the agency has finished the recall process for the named products; it does not mean new products are unaffected by future actions. For a 2024 event, the notice itself is the record to rely on. Coverage from that period quoted no verbatim statement from a named official in the material reviewed for this article, so the facts above are drawn from the FSIS notice and attributed to it.

For a household shopper, the useful lesson is procedural. Keep the label or lot information from ground meat until the cooking is done, and compare details against the official notice whenever a recall is reported, rather than relying on the headline alone.
If you have a package from this recall, the safest step is to stop using it and check the FSIS notice before deciding what to do next.
