The short version: To order Walmart groceries online, sign in to Walmart.com or the Walmart app, choose Pickup or Delivery under How do you want your items?, select an eligible store, address, and time slot, add groceries, review substitutions and fees, and complete checkout before the reservation deadline.
Pickup and delivery availability, prices, fees, inventory, and delivery times vary by location. Walmart may also separate items that must be shipped from the store-fulfilled grocery order, so review the fulfillment method for each item before paying.

How to place a Walmart grocery pickup or delivery order
- Open Walmart.com or the Walmart app and sign in. Create a Walmart account if you do not already have one.
- Select “How do you want your items?” Choose Pickup for curbside collection or Delivery to have a local store’s order brought to your address.
- Choose the store or confirm the delivery address. For delivery, Walmart checks whether the address is served by a participating nearby store. If the first store cannot serve the address, Walmart may offer another nearby store. If no eligible store is available, delivery will not be offered for that address.
- Reserve a time slot. Select an available pickup or delivery window before building the order. The reservation has a displayed deadline for completing checkout; finish the order before that deadline or the slot may no longer be held.
- Add groceries to the cart. Check that each item is available for the selected fulfillment method. Some products may be unavailable for pickup or delivery and may instead appear as shipped items.
- Set substitution preferences. For each eligible item, allow a best-match substitution, choose a preferred substitute, or reject substitutions.
- Review the order and pay. Confirm the store or address, time slot, products, quantities, substitutions, taxes, fees, and payment method. Then complete checkout.
- Complete pickup or receive the delivery. Pickup customers check in through the app, email, or text link. Delivery customers follow the order notifications and any instructions for a PIN, signature, or identification.

Neither option is universally available at every address or store. Express delivery, in particular, may be available only in selected areas and can carry an additional fee.
How to check in for Walmart pickup
After placing a pickup order:
- Open the Walmart app, or open the check-in link in the order email or text message.
- Select I’m on my way when you are heading to the store.
- Park in a designated curbside pickup space.
- Select I’ve parked.
- Enter the pickup-space number and your vehicle color.
A Walmart associate brings the order to the vehicle. If an item was substituted and you do not want it, you can tell the associate to remove it from the order at pickup.

If you arrive late, check the order’s details and the store’s current instructions rather than assuming a universal grace period. Walmart’s operational guidance can include local-time cutoffs, and an order may be canceled after the applicable pickup day ends.
How Walmart grocery delivery works
For standard delivery from a store, Walmart says a local third-party driver delivers the prepared order to the door. Walmart sends a notification when the driver is on the way. Some orders require a PIN or signature; checkout and the delivery instructions indicate when one is needed.
If you are sending the order to another person, make sure the recipient has any required PIN. A delivery cannot necessarily be completed without the required verification.

How much does Walmart grocery pickup or delivery cost?
Walmart’s stated fees and minimums can vary by service and location, so use the checkout total as the final authority. Its current help information says:

- Walmart+ members do not pay the stated $7.95–$9.95 delivery fee on qualifying deliveries, and free store delivery has a $35 minimum.
- Walmart+ orders below $35 can incur a $6.99 minimum-order fee.
- Express service, where available, may add fees.
Walmart+ is optional. You do not need a Walmart+ membership to create a standard pickup order. Because fees and minimums can change, check the specific charges displayed before submitting the order.
Taxes, service charges, and the final cost of weighted products are calculated using the actual fulfillment details. Produce, meat, and other items sold by weight may cost more or less than the estimate shown when you add them to the cart.
Substitutions: how to control what Walmart sends
Store inventory can change between checkout and picking. If an item is unavailable and substitutions are enabled, Walmart may offer a similar product. Before submitting the order, you can generally:
- Allow Walmart to choose a best-match substitute.
- Select a preferred substitute.
- Disallow substitutions for that item.
Walmart charges the price of the item actually substituted. If you do not respond to a substitution offer within the stated response period, Walmart says it may substitute the offered item.
What happens if you reject a substitute?
At pickup, tell the associate that you do not want the substituted item, and it can be removed. For delivery, the driver cannot remove and return the item at the door. Instead, start a return from Purchase History in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com.

How Walmart charges your card
The pending authorization on a debit or credit card may be higher than the final order total. The authorization allows for changes such as variable-weight items, substitutions, canceled items, quantity changes, and bag fees.

The bank—not Walmart—releases the unused portion of the authorization. Walmart says that release can take up to 10 days after the order is complete, depending on the bank.
For that reason, do not treat a pending authorization as the final grocery cost or assume that the full pending amount has been permanently charged.
How to change or cancel a Walmart grocery order
For eligible store-fulfilled orders, the actual editing cutoff appears in Purchase History or the order details. It varies by order type and location. Before the cutoff, available changes may include:
- Adding or removing products.
- Changing quantities.
- Allowing or disallowing substitutions.
- Rescheduling the order once.
Do not assume that a completed pickup order can simply be changed to delivery, or vice versa. Walmart generally requires you to request cancellation and place a new order. An exception may apply when Walmart sends a delayed-delivery message that specifically offers pickup instead.

If you need to cancel or edit an order, open its details in Purchase History and follow the options shown there. The displayed options and deadline are more reliable than a general time estimate.
Using SNAP EBT for Walmart grocery orders
Walmart supports EBT cards from participating states for eligible items. Other payment options listed by Walmart include debit cards, credit cards, Pay by bank, gift cards, Walmart Balance, eligible benefit cards, and PayPal. The options available can depend on the order and location.
To use SNAP EBT online:
- Sign in to Walmart.com or the Walmart app, or create a free account.
- Add the SNAP EBT card to your Wallet.
- Find eligible food using the SNAP EBT filter or the SNAP EBT badge.
- Add eligible products to the cart.
- Follow the checkout instructions for SNAP EBT payment.
SNAP benefits pay for eligible food, not every product or service charge. Non-eligible products and charges require another valid payment method where applicable.
Substitutions can affect the required backup payment. Without a backup payment method, Walmart says a SNAP order can receive only a substitute priced the same as or lower than the original item. With a backup method, the higher-price difference can be charged to that method.

Ordering alcohol with Walmart groceries
Alcohol is available only where state and local law permit it, and availability and sales hours vary. For pickup or delivery, the customer must provide a valid government-issued photo ID.

- If a pickup customer cannot show valid identification, Walmart says the alcohol is removed without charge.
- If a delivery customer cannot show valid identification, Walmart says the entire order is returned to the store.
Do not assume that an alcohol-eligible store or time slot is available in every location.
Ways to avoid common Walmart order problems
- Choose the fulfillment method first. An item available for shipping may not be available for local pickup or delivery.
- Reserve the slot before shopping. Availability can change while you build the cart.
- Finish checkout before the deadline. A selected time window is not necessarily held indefinitely.
- Review substitutions item by item. This is especially important for allergies, dietary restrictions, preferred brands, and SNAP-funded purchases.
- Check the final fees at checkout. Do not rely on a general fee quoted elsewhere because minimums, service charges, and express availability can vary.
- Keep extra funds available. A temporary authorization may be higher than the final total.
- Use the order details for changes. The actual edit, cancellation, and pickup instructions are location- and order-specific.
- For delivery, be ready for verification. Have the required PIN, signature, or photo ID available if the order requires it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I order Walmart groceries without Walmart+?
Yes. Walmart+ is optional and is not required for a standard pickup order. Delivery can also be ordered without Walmart+, but applicable delivery and minimum-order fees are shown at checkout.
Can I change a Walmart pickup order to delivery after checkout?
