Walmart’s Great Value Family Size Chicken Broth recall was initiated in December 2024 and reported in January 2025. The affected product was a specific 48-ounce carton lot—not every Great Value broth. If you have a carton, compare its UPC, lot number and best-by date with the details below before deciding whether it matches.
Is my Great Value chicken broth recalled?
The reported recall covered Great Value Family Size Chicken Broth in 48-ounce cartons with all of these identifying details:
- UPC: 007874206684
- Lot number: 98F09234
- Best-by date: March 25, 2026
The Miami Herald reported that 12,138 cartons were affected and distributed to 242 Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The Associated Press described the FDA report as affecting just over 2,000 cases; cases and cartons are different units, so those figures should not be conflated.
This was a recall initiated in December 2024 and covered in January 2025, not a newly announced October 2026 alert. The lot-level information above is reported in contemporaneous coverage; the FDA’s Event 96023 record is linked through its enforcement-report search interface.

Why was the broth recalled?
TreeHouse Foods, the manufacturer, said a potential seal issue identified during production could cause spoilage. The report identified the company’s Cambridge, Maryland facility. TreeHouse said in an email to the Miami Herald: “This recall of three pallets of product was initiated due to a potential seal issue, identified during production, that may cause spoilage of the product.”
This was reported as a possible packaging-seal problem, not a confirmed pathogen, contamination event or outbreak. TreeHouse said affected product was held and destroyed, and that there had been no complaints or illnesses associated with the recall.

What should you do if you have a matching carton?
- Do not open or consume it. FoodSafety.gov advises consumers not to open or eat a product when its details match a recall notice.
- Request a refund from Walmart. Walmart said customers could request a full refund. The Miami Herald also reported that customers could exchange the product for the same product if it was not recalled.
- Follow current retailer guidance. Check Walmart’s Product Recalls page or contact Walmart for the applicable refund and handling instructions. FoodSafety.gov advises consumers to return or dispose of a matching product according to the recall notice.
If the UPC, lot number or date does not match, do not assume the carton is included solely because it is Great Value chicken broth. If you cannot confirm the identifying details, ask Walmart or consult the official recall listing rather than guessing.
