The disruption affected selected sliced and packaged products, not every type of bread or every supermarket. By February 2026, reports said a new production line had doubled the site’s capacity; that does not confirm what is in stock at any store today.
What happened at the Canning Vale bakery?
A fire broke out at Tip Top Bakeries’ Canning Vale facility in Perth just before 12:30am on Wednesday, 22 October 2025. Early reporting said the cause and extent of the damage were not yet known. The site continued operating in part, but at reduced capacity, and Tip Top warned of a short-term effect on bread availability in WA.
Tip Top said it was working to restore operations and transporting bread into Western Australia from South Australia. ABC reported that the company expected the impact to last over the following days. ABC News’ 27 October 2025 report covered the fire, supply response and retailer impacts.
Which bread products and stores were affected?
Reports described a selective shortage, chiefly involving sliced, sandwich or packaged bread brands. They did not say that all bread was unavailable across WA. Coles reported impacts to some sandwich bread. Woolworths said selected packaged bread brands were short, while other bread and its own in-store bakery products remained in good supply. PerthNow’s 27 October 2025 coverage reported Woolworths’ comments and alternative products.

Country stores reported specific local measures, rather than a statewide rule: FoodWorks stores in Moora and Dalwallinu limited purchases to three loaves per person, while Bruce Rock Supermarket sourced bread from another bakery. In Perth, Woolworths Midvale planned additional in-store baking. Mias Bakery also said it was baking some product to support Tip Top and customers. Its director suggested regional areas could feel supply issues more acutely; that was a comment during the disruption, not a current forecast.
What alternatives were available during the disruption?
The reported workarounds depended on the store and product. Customers could find other bread brands or supermarket bakery products where available; some stores arranged baking or supply from another bakery. Tip Top also brought bread into WA from South Australia. These reports do not establish that a particular alternative was available at every location.

- Check the product range: reports distinguished selected packaged or sandwich bread from other bread and supermarket bakery output.
- Ask about local supply: individual country stores used different arrangements, including purchase limits or alternate bakery sourcing.
- Confirm with the store: coverage of the 2025 event cannot establish current inventory or availability at a specific supermarket.
What changed after the 2025 fire?
In February 2026, PerthNow reported that a new $130 million production line had opened at Canning Vale, doubling the site’s capacity to 8,350 loaves per hour. The report said some early products were already on WA shelves. Tip Top Foodservice also announced the doubled capacity and stated output in a 2026 company post; Food & Drink Business reported the completed redevelopment in March 2026.
Those figures describe the facility’s reported production capacity, not the number of loaves available to any one retailer or the stock on shelves today. The upgrade is a later development in the story, not proof of present-day availability across the state. Are WA supermarkets facing bread shortages now?
The reports establish a disruption in October 2025 and subsequent capacity investment in 2026, but they do not verify current stock at individual supermarkets. Treat the shortage as a past event; for today’s availability, check with the relevant store.
