Its parent company, Vulcan Inc., had announced the planned closure in May 2020. The company’s more than 80 titles included television and augmented-reality projects as well as films and documentaries.
When did Vulcan Productions close?
Vulcan Productions shut down at the end of February 2021, according to GeekWire’s March 8, 2021 report. The end date came after 23 years: Allen launched the venture in 1997.
The closure was announced earlier. On May 27, 2020, Vulcan said its production and arts-and-entertainment divisions would close, with the production company expected to wind down at the start of 2021. The announcement and the eventual shutdown are distinct dates.
Why did Vulcan Productions shut down?
Vulcan’s general manager, Ruth Johnston, said the decision reflected the transition after Allen’s death in 2018 and the COVID-19 crisis. Johnston’s statement explained the company’s stated rationale; it did not provide a financial account of the decision.

“This difficult decision was made as part of the ongoing transition after Paul G. Allen’s passing in 2018, and in light of the unprecedented crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
GeekWire reported that Vulcan declined to say how many employees were affected, so a specific job-loss figure is not established.

What did Vulcan Productions make?
GeekWire reported that the company produced more than 80 titles. That total was not limited to feature films: its work spanned documentaries, feature films, television series, augmented-reality projects and other formats.
Summer of Soul
One of the company’s prominent late projects was Summer of Soul, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. GeekWire reported that it won both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Hunger Ward documents the toll of hunger on children in war-torn Yemen. GeekWire described the film as drawing Oscar buzz in its March 2021 coverage; that was a contemporaneous observation, not a statement about its current awards standing.
Master of Light
In August 2020, Realscreen reported that Vulcan Productions was making the feature documentary Master of Light with One Story Up. The trade publication described it as one of the final films in Vulcan’s pipeline.

The shutdown ended the production venture, not the existence of its completed titles. The record reported at the time points to a body of work broader than theatrical documentaries, with projects made for different formats and audiences. Vulcan communications director Janet Greenlee expressed the company’s view of that work as an effort to address problems facing communities and the natural world.
The cited reports do not establish where each title can currently be watched, whether physical editions are available, or what rights arrangements remain in place. Availability should be checked title by title rather than inferred from the company’s closure or past awards.
