Vultr is worth considering if you want configurable cloud infrastructure and can manage the server yourself. Hostwinds may fit better if you want a cloud-server option with managed services available and documented backup plans. Compare the exact region, resources, support level, backups and add-ons—not just the advertised starting price.
What are you comparing?
Hostwinds describes its cloud server as a VPS running on its cloud platform, with template-backed and custom options. Its unmanaged plans do not include staff assistance; customers can upgrade to managed services. Vultr publishes a configurable Cloud Compute catalog. These are cloud-server choices, not a like-for-like comparison with Hostwinds shared hosting.
The right choice depends on who will administer the server. With an unmanaged service, you should be prepared to handle system configuration, updates, security and troubleshooting yourself, or arrange that help separately. If you need provider assistance, confirm exactly what the managed option covers before buying; the cited Hostwinds documentation establishes the availability of managed services, but not a detailed scope of included work.

How do the published prices compare?
Vultr’s pricing page, indexed around September 2026, lists Cloud Compute examples starting at $2.50 per month for 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB memory, 0.50 TB bandwidth and 10 GB storage on an IPv6-only plan, and $3.50 per month for a similarly sized plan that is not IPv6-only. The page warns that prices can vary by location. These small examples are not enough to establish which provider costs less for your workload.
A secondary comparison published by Kuraberu gives a more closely matched example, with prices stated as of 21 September 2026:
Rank #2
| Plan in the comparison | Monthly price in the 21 September 2026 snapshot | Reported specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Hostwinds Unmanaged SSD Cloud 7 | $76.99 | 16 GB RAM, 6 shared vCPU, 300 GB SSD, 5 TB bandwidth |
| Vultr Cloud Compute 6C | $80 | 16 GB RAM, 6 vCPU, 320 GB SSD, 5.1 TB bandwidth |
This is a secondary snapshot, not a current quote or an independent performance test. Verify the plan and price directly with each provider before relying on it. The label “shared vCPU” on the Hostwinds example also differs from the comparison’s “vCPU” description for Vultr, so the matching core count does not establish identical CPU allocation or performance. The comparison is available at Kuraberu’s plan comparison.
What can change the monthly bill?
Vultr backups and bandwidth
Vultr’s pricing FAQ says automatic backups add 20% to an instance’s base hourly or monthly fee. Stored snapshots cost $0.05 per GB per month, and bandwidth above quota costs $0.01 per GB. Include the backup method you intend to use and realistic bandwidth needs when calculating the total. Check the Vultr pricing page for current terms and location-specific prices.

Hostwinds backups
Hostwinds’ backup documentation lists a $1 monthly service fee for cloud platforms, plus $0.03 per GB of backup data stored per month. The separate $3 monthly service fee applies to shared and business hosting, not the cloud-server category discussed here. When the backup service is purchased, the documented default is nightly backups with 60-day retention. Confirm the current charge and retention terms before signup in Hostwinds’ backup retention and pricing documentation.
Hostwinds also warns that backup data in its object storage is not automatically deleted when the associated hosting platform is canceled. Make deleting or retaining those backups an explicit offboarding task, and account for any continuing storage charges.
How to make a fair comparison
- Choose the service type. Compare cloud VPS plans, not a Hostwinds shared-hosting price against a cloud-server plan.
- Match the workload. Select configurations with the memory, CPU allocation, storage and bandwidth your application needs. Similar headline specifications do not guarantee equivalent performance.
- Check the region. Select the actual data center you would use and compare its current price and availability. Vultr notes that location-level prices can differ.
- Decide who manages the server. If you need staff support or administration, establish what is included and whether it costs extra. Hostwinds says unmanaged plans receive no staff support assistance and that customers can upgrade to managed services.
- Add backup and usage costs. Compare backup frequency, retention, storage charges, restore process and bandwidth overages alongside the base server charge.
- Check extras before committing. Include any required licenses or add-ons in the total, and confirm current billing terms with the provider.
Which provider is the better fit?
Consider Vultr if
- You want configurable cloud infrastructure and are comfortable administering the server or arranging that work yourself.
- You can choose a specific compute plan and data-center region based on your workload.
- You have accounted for backup charges, snapshot storage and any bandwidth above the included quota.
Consider Hostwinds if
- You want a cloud-server option with managed services available, and you have confirmed that the managed scope meets your needs.
- You prefer the documented backup arrangement, including its stated nightly frequency and 60-day default retention when purchased.
- You have included the backup service fee and stored-data charge, and have planned how to handle backups when canceling.
No comparative uptime, speed-test or benchmark evidence establishes that one provider performs better. Choose based on your management needs and the complete cost of a matched configuration in the region you plan to use, rather than assuming the lowest entry price is the cheapest overall.
