Re:

VOO vs. SCHD: Which ETF Fits a Dividend-Focused Portfolio?

SCHD uses dividend-focused screens and reported higher recent yields, while VOO tracks the broader S&P 500 and reported a lower expense ratio. Compare the dated figures and trade-offs before deciding which approach fits your portfolio.

SCHD is the more dividend-focused ETF and had higher recent issuer-reported yield figures; VOO tracks the broader S&P 500 and had the lower reported expense ratio. Neither fund is automatically the better choice: the fit depends on whether a portfolio prioritizes a dividend-screened strategy or broad large-cap U.S. stock exposure, as well as on risk tolerance, taxes, and time horizon.

Yield figures below are dated issuer measurements, not forecasts or guaranteed income. The funds report different yield measures on different dates, so they should not be treated as a perfectly matched comparison.

What is the main difference between VOO and SCHD?

VOO and SCHD are U.S. stock exchange-traded funds, but they follow different indexes and therefore select stocks differently. VOO seeks to track the S&P 500, a broad benchmark dominated by large U.S. companies. SCHD seeks to track the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index before fees and expenses, a dividend-focused index that selects stocks using dividend-related and fundamental screens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference matters more than the tickers’ distribution amounts alone. VOO is designed to provide broad large-cap exposure; SCHD focuses on companies meeting its index’s dividend and fundamental criteria. A dividend screen does not make a fund risk-free, and a higher yield does not by itself establish a higher total return.

Schwab describes SCHD’s goal as follows: “The fund’s goal is to track as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the total return of the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100™ Index.” This is an objective, not a promise that the fund will track perfectly or achieve a particular investment result. Likewise, Vanguard describes VOO as seeking to track the S&P 500 Index, a widely recognized measure of U.S. stock market performance dominated by large U.S. companies.

In practical terms, choosing between the funds means choosing between different index rules, not simply choosing between a high and low cash payment. VOO’s benchmark is broad large-cap U.S. equity exposure. SCHD’s benchmark applies dividend-related and fundamental screens. Those approaches can produce different portfolios and different income measurements, and neither strategy removes the possibility of losing principal.

How do the funds compare on the available issuer figures?

The following figures were published by Vanguard and Schwab Asset Management in 2026. Their dates are not aligned, so consider them snapshots rather than a synchronized market comparison.

Holdings counts do not, by themselves, measure diversification or risk: the funds use different selection methods and portfolio compositions. The comparison above also does not establish which fund performed better. No same-period, same-basis total-return figures are included here.

The figures should be read in pairs only with care. For example, the 505 VOO holdings figure is dated July 31, whereas SCHD’s 102 holdings figure is dated September 10. A count is not a complete description of what the fund owns, how positions are weighted, or how the portfolio may behave. Nor does the count alone show whether one fund is appropriate for a particular investor. The objective and index methodology give context that a raw number cannot.

Which ETF has the higher dividend yield?

SCHD had the higher yield in the issuer figures listed above, but the numbers are not all the same measure or from the same date. Schwab reported SCHD’s 30-day SEC yield as 3.23% on September 9, 2026, and its trailing-12-month distribution yield as 3.13% on July 31, 2026. Vanguard reported VOO’s 30-day SEC yield as 1.00% and dividend yield as 1.07%, both on July 31, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

So the concise answer to “Which has the higher dividend yield?” is SCHD in the quoted issuer-reported figures. The careful answer is that this comparison reflects different dates and, depending on which figures are used, different yield definitions. The figures indicate what issuers reported at those points in time; they do not promise a future payment amount or establish which fund will deliver the better overall investment result.

What the yield labels mean

The 30-day SEC yield is a standardized annualized measure based on a recent 30-day period; it is not a promise of the income an investor will receive over the next year. Schwab defines it using average daily dividends for the 30-day period, annualized and divided by NAV per share at the period’s end, under the SEC’s standardized formula. See Schwab’s yield definitions.

A trailing-12-month distribution yield reflects distributions over the preceding year relative to the fund’s share price or net asset value under the issuer’s stated methodology. A dividend yield is another issuer-reported measure and should be read using that issuer’s definition. Because methods and dates differ, do not treat the percentages as interchangeable or as exact estimates of future cash payments.

When comparing an updated fact sheet or fund profile, check the precise label, the as-of date, and the definition supplied by the issuer. A change in yield can reflect a change in distributions, the value used in the calculation, or both. A percentage shown without its measure and date loses important context. If a figure is refreshed before publication, update the date and wording rather than silently comparing a new number with a stale one.

Why a higher yield is not the whole decision

Yield does not measure total return, which also reflects changes in share value. A fund can distribute income while its share price falls, and distributions can change. The recent yield gap indicates that SCHD’s dividend-oriented approach produced higher reported yield measurements at those dates; it does not prove that SCHD will continue to pay more or outperform VOO.

Investors should also distinguish a fund’s cash distributions from the return of the investment as a whole. If the aim is income, a yield figure can be one relevant input, but the amount and timing of actual distributions can vary. If the aim is total return, yield alone leaves out changes in market value. The issuer figures cited here do not provide comparable total-return numbers for these funds, so they cannot support a claim that either one won on performance.

How much do VOO and SCHD cost to own?

Vanguard reported VOO’s expense ratio as 0.03% as of April 28, 2026. Schwab’s SCHD profile reported a 0.060% total expense ratio in the profile retrieved in September 2026. On those issuer-reported figures, VOO’s expense ratio was lower. Confirm current figures with each fund issuer before investing because fees can change.

To put the percentages in scale, if the reported ratios remained unchanged, 0.03% would correspond to roughly $3 a year for each $10,000 invested, while 0.060% would correspond to roughly $6. This is an illustration of the rate, not a quote of an investor’s actual cost or a forecast of account performance. Fund expenses are reflected in fund returns, and actual balances and expenses change over time.

An expense ratio is a fund-level operating expense, reflected in fund performance rather than usually billed as a separate transaction to an investor. It is not the only possible cost: brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, and taxes may also affect an investor’s outcome, depending on account and trading circumstances. ETF shares trade at market prices that can differ from net asset value.

The fee difference is one part of the comparison, not a stand-alone reason to select a fund. A lower expense ratio does not tell you whether its index exposure matches your goal, while a higher recent yield does not offset or erase other costs automatically. Check the current issuer profile and the brokerage terms that apply to your own trading rather than assuming all investors face the same transaction costs.

How often do the funds pay distributions, and can the amounts change?

Both issuers’ materials show quarterly distribution schedules. Schwab’s 2026 distribution history lists SCHD income distributions of $0.2569 per share with a March 25, 2026 ex-date and $0.2525 per share with a June 24, 2026 ex-date. These are individual historical payments, not a recurring quarterly rate or forecast. Vanguard’s March 2026 fact sheet lists a quarterly schedule for VOO; the figures cited here do not establish a future VOO payment amount.

Distribution timing and amounts can change, and neither schedule guarantees future payments. Investors who need a particular cash flow should not assume that a past quarterly payment or current yield will continue unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SCHD examples are useful as historical records, not as a calculation of what a future quarter will pay. The March and June per-share amounts are two particular distributions with their own ex-dates; they do not establish that the next payment will match either one or that every quarter will be the same. Likewise, the issuer figures support a quarterly schedule for VOO but do not supply a VOO payment amount to use as a forecast.

If an investor is evaluating cash needs, the practical question is not only how often a fund has paid, but whether variable distributions and fluctuating share prices fit that need. The issuer-reported yields are standardized or historical measurements and should not be converted into a guaranteed personal income estimate. Review current distribution records and fund materials for updated information.

Which fund may fit a dividend-focused portfolio?

SCHD may be relevant when dividend screens are central

SCHD’s index is explicitly dividend-focused, and its recent issuer-reported yield metrics were higher than VOO’s figures. That can make its strategy worth examining for investors who want exposure selected through dividend and fundamental screens. The fund held 102 securities as of September 10, 2026, according to Schwab; a smaller holding count than VOO’s snapshot is not, by itself, proof of greater risk or lower diversification.

“Is SCHD a dividend ETF?” is a reasonable way to frame the strategy: it follows a dividend-focused index, and its screening approach is relevant to that description. But the label is not a substitute for examining the index objective, fund holdings, risks, distribution history, and fees. Dividend focus does not mean that payments are fixed, that every holding will maintain its dividend, or that the fund’s market value cannot decline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VOO may be relevant when broad S&P 500 exposure is the priority

VOO tracks the S&P 500 rather than selecting stocks primarily for dividend characteristics. Vanguard reported 505 holdings as of July 31, 2026, and a lower expense ratio in the figures above. Its yield measurements were lower in the cited issuer data, so it may be less aligned with a goal centered specifically on current dividend yield.

That does not make VOO a fund without distributions: Vanguard’s material lists a quarterly schedule. The relevant distinction is that its stated objective is to track the S&P 500, not to follow SCHD’s dividend-focused selection approach. Investors comparing the two should therefore start with the exposure they want, then consider yield, costs, taxes, and risk rather than relying on the distribution label alone.

Questions to weigh before choosing

  • Is the priority broad large-cap U.S. exposure, or an index screened for dividend and fundamental characteristics?
  • Are you seeking current cash distributions, long-term total return, or a balance? Yield alone does not answer that question.
  • Would a concentrated selection relative to a broad benchmark fit your diversification and risk preferences?
  • Can you tolerate fluctuations in market value and changes in distributions?
  • Does the fund fit your account type, tax situation, and investment horizon?

These questions can be turned into a simple review process. First, write down the purpose the ETF would serve in the portfolio: broad S&P 500 exposure, dividend-screened exposure, or a particular cash-flow role. Second, compare each fund’s stated index objective with that purpose. Third, check current issuer data for the expense ratio, yield measure and date, holdings snapshot, and distribution history. Fourth, consider the possibility of falling share prices, changed distributions, and tax consequences in the account where the ETF would be held. Finally, read the prospectus for each fund’s risks, charges, and expenses.

This process does not produce a universal winner, and the available figures do not establish that one approach is suitable for every portfolio. It does help keep the comparison anchored in strategy and current, clearly labeled data rather than a single yield number. These are general comparison points, not a personalized recommendation.

What are the tax and investment risks?

Distributions and sales of ETF shares can have tax consequences, but the outcome depends on the account, the investor’s circumstances, and applicable tax rules. Schwab notes that its after-tax return calculations use the highest federal tax bracket and exclude state and local taxes; that illustration should not be treated as an estimate of an individual investor’s tax bill.

Tax treatment is therefore not something to infer from the yield comparison alone. The same published after-tax illustration may not describe an investor’s federal bracket, state or local tax situation, or account type. Consider the relevant tax rules for the individual circumstances and seek qualified tax guidance if needed; the figures here are not an individual tax calculation.

Both funds invest in stocks, so principal can decline. ETF shares also trade at market prices that may be above or below net asset value. Neither a dividend strategy nor a broad index strategy eliminates market risk. Issuer yield and performance disclosures are historical or standardized measurements; past performance does not guarantee future results.

Investors should review each fund’s prospectus for a fuller discussion of risks, charges, and expenses. The quoted holdings, fees, and yields are issuer snapshots, not permanent characteristics. Market prices can fluctuate, and the amount received from a future distribution is not assured.

How to make a fair VOO-versus-SCHD performance comparison

Yield and expense ratios do not establish which fund delivered the better total return. To compare performance, use each issuer’s total-return figures for the same end date and the same periods, on the same basis, and check whether distributions are reinvested. Include the measurement date and remember that past performance does not guarantee future results. The figures in this article do not establish a current comparable performance winner.

A fair comparison requires more than placing two percentages next to one another. Match the start and end dates, use the same measurement periods, and confirm that the figures are both total returns calculated on the same basis. Check whether the presentation assumes reinvestment of distributions; otherwise one figure might not be comparable with the other. The issuer data cited here do not verify a current matched return series for VOO and SCHD, so no performance ranking is offered here.

Keep the question aligned with the metric: compare yield measures to understand reported income characteristics, expense ratios to compare reported fund operating costs, and comparable total returns to assess past performance over a defined period. None of those measurements alone predicts future results or answers whether the fund fits an individual portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between VOO and SCHD?

VOO seeks to track the broad S&P 500 Index. SCHD seeks to track the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, which uses dividend-related and fundamental screens. They therefore follow different index strategies.

Which has the higher dividend yield, VOO or SCHD?

SCHD had higher yield figures in the issuer data cited here: a 3.23% 30-day SEC yield as of September 9, 2026, and a 3.13% trailing-12-month distribution yield as of July 31, 2026. VOO’s reported 30-day SEC yield was 1.00% and its dividend yield was 1.07%, both as of July 31, 2026. The measures and dates differ, and none guarantees future income.

Is SCHD a dividend ETF?

SCHD follows a dividend-focused index that selects U.S. stocks using dividend-related and fundamental screens. The strategy is dividend-oriented, but that does not guarantee distributions or prevent losses in share value.

How often do VOO and SCHD pay dividends?

The issuer materials cited here show quarterly distribution schedules for both funds. Payments can vary, and a quarterly schedule does not guarantee a particular future amount or date.

Which fund has the lower expense ratio?

Vanguard reported VOO’s expense ratio as 0.03% as of April 28, 2026. Schwab’s SCHD profile reported a 0.060% total expense ratio in the profile retrieved in September 2026. Verify current figures with the issuers because fees can change.

Does a higher yield mean SCHD will outperform VOO?

No. Yield is not total return, which also includes changes in share value, and distributions can change. The cited issuer figures do not provide a same-period, same-basis performance comparison, so they do not establish a return winner.

Can either fund guarantee a specific amount of income?

No. Yield figures and historical distributions are not promises. Distribution amounts can change, and ETF share prices can fall. Investors who need cash flow should not assume a past payment or current yield will continue unchanged.

The Bottom Line

SCHD is the more dividend-focused option and had higher recent issuer-reported yields, while VOO follows the broader S&P 500 and had the lower reported expense ratio. The figures are dated, the yield measures are not identical, and neither yield nor past distributions guarantee future income. Compare each fund’s objective, costs, risks, tax context, and fit with your time horizon; the information here does not establish a universal winner or a personalized recommendation.
