How many guests can you bring?
There is no single guest limit for every American Express Platinum card or Centurion Lounge. For U.S.-issued Platinum and Business Platinum accounts, the usual allowance is paid guests unless the account has earned complimentary guest access. U.S. Corporate Platinum has a separate benefit, and other countries set their own rules.

Amex’s U.S. terms cap complimentary access at two guests per card member per visit even if the cardholder qualifies through multiple Platinum accounts or holds other eligible Amex cards. If you visit more than one Centurion Lounge or Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge location on the same day, guest fees apply at each location. Amex’s U.S. lounge terms set out the fees and qualification rules.
For a U.S. Platinum or Business Platinum member who has not qualified for complimentary access, the published fee is charged per guest, not as a single fee for a traveling party. A party with multiple guests should therefore calculate the cost guest by guest, using the $30 rate only for children aged 2 through 17 whose age can be documented. The cited terms do not provide a general worldwide fee schedule, so do not apply these U.S. prices to a card issued elsewhere.

Also distinguish the number of guests a card permits from the number of people who can actually enter at a particular time. The U.S. terms make admission subject to space availability. A complimentary guest allowance or payment of a guest fee does not reserve seats or ensure entry when the lounge cannot accommodate more visitors.
How U.S. Platinum cardholders qualify for complimentary guests
The primary and Additional U.S. Platinum card members’ eligible purchases on the Platinum account count toward the $75,000 calendar-year threshold. Reaching it does not necessarily activate the benefit immediately: Amex says eligibility is typically processed within a week, but processing can take up to 12 weeks.
The threshold is an annual account qualification, not a per-visit test: once the benefit takes effect, the account can provide up to two complimentary guests per card member per visit during the benefit period. The maximum remains two even if more than one Platinum account or another eligible Amex card could appear to qualify. If your travel date is close to the point when the account reaches $75,000, do not assume the benefit will already show as active; allow for the stated processing time and verify your status before relying on it.
Purchases that do not count
Amex excludes fees and interest, cash advances, travelers checks, prepaid-card purchases or reloads, gift cards, person-to-person payments and other cash equivalents from eligible purchases. The published policy also excludes other ineligible transactions under its terms, so do not treat every charge that appears on the account as qualifying spend.
In practical terms, check the account’s eligible-purchase total rather than adding up all statement activity. A payment or transaction that posts to the account is not automatically qualifying spend; the exclusions matter when estimating progress toward $75,000. Amex’s terms are the controlling reference for whether a particular purchase counts.

How long the benefit lasts
Once effective, complimentary guest access continues for the rest of the calendar year in which the threshold is met, the following calendar year and through January 31 of the next year. The two-guest-per-visit maximum still applies.
For example, if the account meets the threshold during a calendar year and the benefit becomes effective, its complimentary guest access continues through the balance of that year, all of the next calendar year and January 31 after that. It is not described as a permanent status, and the timing follows the calendar-year benefit period in the terms.

What you need to enter a U.S. lounge
For U.S. Platinum access, arrive no more than three hours before the departing flight. Amex requires a valid eligible Platinum card and a same-day confirmed boarding pass for a departing flight on any carrier. The name on the boarding pass must match the card. Entry remains subject to available space, so meeting the timing and documentation conditions does not guarantee admission.
The “any carrier” language means the same-day departing flight does not have to be operated by a particular airline under these terms. It does not mean that any boarding pass, by itself, is enough: the card must qualify, the departure timing must fit, the cardholder’s name must match, the guest itinerary rule must be satisfied where applicable, and space must be available.
U.S. Corporate Platinum terms likewise require a valid card and same-day confirmed departing-flight boarding pass; Amex says the member may be asked for government identification. Review the U.S. Business Platinum comparison page and applicable card terms for the benefits attached to a particular account.

Same-flight rule and layover access
Effective July 8, 2026, guests accompanying a U.S. cardholder must travel on the same flight as that cardholder. A guest with a separate itinerary should not assume that being at the lounge at the same time is enough. This itinerary condition is separate from the card’s guest count and any fee: a guest must meet the flight rule as well as fit within the applicable allowance.

Departures
The three-hour window is measured against the departing flight. A boarding pass by itself does not establish eligibility: the card must be eligible, the arrival must fall within the permitted window, the guest must meet the same-flight rule, and the lounge must have capacity.
Before leaving for the lounge, compare the planned arrival time with the flight’s scheduled departure and confirm that the boarding pass is for a same-day departing flight. If the cardholder and guest have different flights, the fact that both are departing on the same day does not satisfy the same-flight policy. Confirm that the card and boarding-pass names match as required for the cardholder’s entry.
Connections
For a layover, the card member may enter within five hours of the connecting flight. A same-day round trip is not treated as a connection. Nor does a boarding pass for a flight that has already landed at its final destination permit lounge entry. Plan around the flight that qualifies under the policy, rather than assuming any same-day ticket will work.
The layover allowance is an exception to the ordinary departure timing, not a way to use an arrival-only ticket after reaching the final destination. If you have a genuine connection, use the next connecting flight to check the five-hour window. If you are returning to your starting point later the same day, that round-trip itinerary is specifically not considered a connection for this purpose.

Why the rules differ by country and card
Guest allowances are tied to the card’s issuing market and product type, not simply to the word “Platinum.” U.S. personal and business Platinum terms use the spend-triggered guest benefit; U.S. Corporate Platinum terms separately provide up to two complimentary guests. Centurion products and cards issued outside the United States can have distinct allowances.
When comparing two travelers’ cards, check the issuing country first, then the precise product—personal, business, corporate or another card type. Next verify whether a U.S. Platinum account has met the eligible-spend threshold, how many guests are included, and whether any child-age conditions apply. Finally, check the itinerary, timing and local lounge policy. A benefit described for one card or market should not be treated as a rule for every Platinum card.
For Australia, Amex states that from July 8, 2026, Platinum Personal and Business guest access changed from two complimentary guests to one, while Corporate Platinum members may continue to bring up to two. The Australian lounge page also describes eligible children aged 17 or younger and notes that additional guest charges may apply and entry depends on space. Amex’s UK Global Lounge Collection terms announce the same July 8, 2026 guest-count change for Platinum Personal and Business cards and specify that the terms cover U.S. lounges and selected international locations. That does not make the U.S. rules universal: check the policy for the specific lounge and the market that issued your card. The UK Global Lounge Collection terms identify their geographic scope.

- Identify the card precisely. Confirm whether it is U.S. personal, Business, Corporate, Centurion or issued in another market. Find the lounge’s policy for that product and location.
- Check guest qualification. For U.S. Platinum and Business Platinum, confirm whether the account has reached $75,000 of eligible purchases in the calendar year and whether the complimentary benefit has become effective. Otherwise, budget for the published per-guest fee.
- Count guests and estimate charges. Confirm the card’s guest limit, count each person in your party, and use the correct child age and proof-of-age rule where it applies. If your day includes multiple lounge locations, remember that U.S. guest fees apply at each location.
- Match the itinerary. Make sure the cardholder and guests are on the same flight under the rules effective July 8, 2026. For a connection, check the five-hour window; do not count a same-day round trip as a layover.
- Time arrival and bring documentation. For U.S. departure access, arrive within three hours of departure with the eligible card and same-day confirmed boarding pass bearing the matching name. Carry government identification if required by the applicable terms.
- Allow for capacity limits. Lounge entry is subject to space availability. A card benefit is not a reservation or guarantee of admission.
Common policy mistakes
- Applying one country’s guest limit everywhere: allowances differ by issuing market, card product and lounge.
- Assuming the spend threshold makes guests immediately free: Amex processing can take up to 12 weeks after the threshold is reached.
- Counting excluded transactions toward $75,000: fees, interest, cash advances, gift cards and other listed cash-equivalent transactions do not qualify.
- Bringing a guest on a different flight: the same-flight requirement applies from July 8, 2026.
- Treating a same-day return as a connection: Amex explicitly excludes same-day round trips from the layover rule.
- Assuming admission is guaranteed: valid credentials and correct timing do not override space constraints.
- Assuming a guest benefit follows every eligible card: the U.S. terms cap complimentary guests at two per card member per visit, even where multiple Platinum accounts or other eligible cards are involved.
- Forgetting a second lounge stop: U.S. guest fees apply again at each Centurion Lounge or Sidecar location visited that day.
