It took effective control of Auto Union, the company whose history leads to today’s Audi, on 1 January 1965, and it completed full ownership in 1966. Audi MediaCenter gives the exact completion date as 1 November 1966. The headline is accurate about the outcome but compresses a staged purchase of a predecessor company into a single word, so the details below matter for anyone quoting it.
What the headline compresses
The company Volkswagen bought was Auto Union GmbH, which was then a subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. Audi was the brand and the product line within that company’s lineage, and the Audi name is the reason the 1960s transaction is remembered today. Audi’s own history draws a careful line here: the 1966 Auto Union was not the same legal entity as the modern AUDI AG. Readers should therefore treat “Volkswagen took complete ownership of Audi in 1966” as shorthand for “Volkswagen completed its takeover of the predecessor company that became Audi.”
A more precise way to put it: Volkswagen completed its takeover of Auto Union, the historic company behind Audi, in 1966.

Volkswagen’s own account puts it plainly: “On January 1, 1965, Volkswagenwerk AG initially acquired a stake of 50.3 percent, giving it effective control over Auto Union, which then became a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen in 1966.” Audi MediaCenter uses the more exact formulation: “From 1 November 1966, Auto Union GmbH was a fully owned subsidiary of VW.” When a single completion date is needed, 1 November 1966 is the one the Audi source supports.
Why Volkswagen wanted Auto Union
Volkswagen’s official history gives its own reasons for the deal. These are the company’s retrospective explanation, not motives independently verified by outside sources, but they show what the buyer saw in the business:

- Workforce and network: Ingolstadt brought a skilled workforce and a sales and service organization with more than 1,200 dealers and workshops.
- Engineering: The package included a licence for the medium-pressure engine developed by Daimler-Benz.
- Product and competition: A board study considered placing an F 102-based vehicle under the Audi name as a European alternative in the mid-range segment, and the acquisition removed a direct competitor.
From Auto Union to today’s Audi
The 1969 merger with NSU is the step that connects the 1966 company to the Audi of today. Audi’s history describes the result as AUDI NSU AUTO UNION AG, incorporated into the Volkswagen Group. That merger explains the lineage, but it does not make the 1966 Auto Union and the modern AUDI AG the same legal entity, which is why the careful wording above matters.
Who owns Audi now
The current relationship is described in two official sources. Volkswagen Group’s 2025 annual report identifies Volkswagen AG as the parent of the Volkswagen Group and says it holds direct or indirect interests in AUDI AG. Audi’s company page describes Audi as a brand of the Volkswagen Group.

The annual report’s wording is “direct or indirect interests,” not a single headline percentage, and the sources cited here do not give a current shareholding figure for AUDI AG. Anyone who needs an exact percentage should check the shareholding disclosure in Volkswagen’s current annual report rather than relying on a number from a secondary article.

For personal-finance readers, the practical takeaway is narrower: this is a settled piece of corporate history. Its dates are useful for accurate citation, but they do not on their own describe a current ownership change or a new transaction.
