A 60-year-old man in Visakhapatnam reportedly lost Rs 12 lakh after a caller offering a credit-card limit increase asked for card photos and an OTP, then sent him an APK through WhatsApp. The case, reported by The Times of India on October 10, 2026, is a reminder to verify limit offers through a bank’s official channels—and to act quickly if card details or an OTP have been shared.
How the reported credit-card limit-upgrade scam unfolded
According to The Times of India, the 60-year-old Vizag resident received a call from someone claiming to represent a private bank and offering a higher credit limit. The caller reportedly requested photographs of both sides of the card and an OTP. The man later received an APK file on WhatsApp, installed it believing it was legitimate, and entered card details into an app that appeared connected to the bank.

The report says he then received an alert for a Rs 7 lakh debit, followed by further transactions totaling Rs 5 lakh. The reported loss was Rs 12 lakh in all. He went to the Vizag cybercrime police station and lodged a complaint seeking action and recovery.

Why a limit increase can be used as a lure
A caller promising a higher limit gives a customer a reason to share information or follow instructions that might otherwise seem suspicious. In this reported case, the request reportedly combined card photographs, an OTP, and installation of an app sent over WhatsApp.
Earlier Times of India reporting on a local wave of credit-limit-upgrade complaints said more than 20 people from parts of Vizag lost over Rs 25 lakh in one month. That article, published May 25, 2026, also described a separate case involving an APK sent by a caller who claimed to be helping deactivate a card. These are figures and details reported in that article, not independently verified totals.

Axis Bank’s fraud-awareness guidance describes vishing callers who claim to represent a bank and direct customers to malicious websites for credit-card limit enhancement. It advises customers to use the bank’s official phone-banking number or reach its website by typing the address directly into a browser.

- Do not share card details or an OTP with a caller. Local police issued this warning in the account of the current case, as reported by The Times of India.
- Check the offer independently. Open the bank’s official app yourself, type the bank’s website address into your browser, or call the official number printed on your card or listed on the bank’s official website. Do not rely on a number, link, or app provided by an unsolicited caller.
- Do not install an APK sent by a caller. A claimed bank affiliation or an app that appears bank-related is not proof that the file is legitimate.
- Keep transaction alerts enabled. Alerts can help you spot an unfamiliar debit promptly.
The advice to verify through official channels is consistent with Axis Bank’s fraud-awareness guidance. The cited sources do not establish that any particular bank made the offer in the Vizag case.

What to do if you shared an OTP or see a suspicious transaction
- Contact your bank immediately. Use its official app, website, or phone number—not contact details supplied by the caller. Tell the bank what you shared and identify any transactions you do not recognize.
- Ask the bank to block the card or account as appropriate. Delhi Police Cyber Crime Cell advises cardholders who suspect online transaction fraud to complain to the bank and block the card or account immediately.
- Report the incident. The Times of India report points victims to the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The cited report does not specify current response timelines or guarantee a particular result.
- Keep relevant records. Retain transaction alerts, messages, call details, and complaint references to help explain the sequence to the bank and authorities.
Delhi Police’s guidance is available through its credit-card fraud page. Reporting is important, but neither the reported Vizag case nor the cited guidance promises that money will be recovered.
