The latest estimate we could locate puts Viscount Rothermere and family at £2.05 billion. It appears at rank 76 in the 2026 Sunday Times Rich List, as reproduced by eBusinessBlog. That is a rich-list estimate for the family as a group, not an audited balance sheet, and no source we reviewed gives a verified personal net worth for Jonathan Harmsworth, the 4th Viscount Rothermere.

The estimates, side by side

Rich-list totals are revised every year, and a single headline figure can hide a lot. The table below lists every dated estimate we found for the family, with the publisher and what each figure is attributed to.

Estimate Source (as reproduced) Figure Rank shown Scope and method
2026 Sunday Times Rich List eBusinessBlog, 2026 £2.05 billion 76 Viscount Rothermere and family; methodology not stated in the reproduction
2025 Sunday Times Rich List Share the Wealth, July 2025 £1.3 billion 124= Viscount Rothermere and family; methodology not stated in the reproduction
Historical profile The Guardian (MediaGuardian), 2010 £608 million not stated Rothermere and family; 16 years old and useful only as historical context

Both recent figures are secondhand. We did not find the original Sunday Times tables, so the numbers should be read as attributed estimates rather than confirmed values.

Why the 2025 and 2026 figures do not show a clean gain

The gap between £1.3 billion and £2.05 billion is about £750 million. The 2026 reproduction, however, states a change of £100 million for the family. Those two numbers cannot both describe the same movement from the 2025 list. The reproduction does not explain which base year the change column uses, and we found no source that reconciles them.

Rich-list valuations also rest on assumptions about the value of private companies, property and trust-held assets, and those assumptions can change from one year to the next without any change in the underlying holdings. For that reason, the difference between the two lists should not be described as a precisely measured increase in cash or assets, or as wealth the family earned in a single year.

Who owns the family’s stake: DMGT and the trust

Most of the family’s publicly visible wealth is linked to DMGT, the Daily Mail and General Trust. DMGT’s investor pages state that the company is 100% owned by Rothermere Continuation Limited (RCL). RCL made a successful offer for the shares it did not already own, and DMGT left the London Stock Exchange in January 2022. In October 2025, RCL agreed to add DMGT Holdings Limited as a new group parent.

DMGT’s 2024 annual report adds the control structure. It says RCL’s main asset is its controlling shareholding in DMGT, and that RCL is controlled by a discretionary trust for the benefit of Viscount Rothermere and his immediate family. The report describes that trust as DMGT’s ultimate controlling party.

That arrangement tells you who controls the group and who benefits from it. It does not tell you how much each beneficiary owns, what liabilities sit outside the group, or how much the family holds in assets unrelated to DMGT. A discretionary trust does not give any one beneficiary a fixed, personal share of the trust’s assets, so a rich-list total for “the family” is not the same as a sum of individual accounts.

What is not established

  • A current, itemised valuation of the family’s assets outside DMGT.
  • The methodology behind the 2025 and 2026 rich-list figures, including how private holdings and liabilities were valued.
  • Any personal share of the trust attributed to Viscount Rothermere or to individual family members.
  • Any official statement from the family or DMGT giving a total net worth figure.

How to read a rich-list figure for a family business

  1. Check the year and the publisher. A 2026 total and a 2025 total from different reproductions may use different methods.
  2. Check the scope. “Family” figures usually cover a group of people and holdings, not one person.
  3. Check whether the source is primary. Company filings show ownership and control. Rich-list tables show estimates.
  4. Treat year-on-year changes with caution. A move in the headline total can reflect valuation changes, not earned income or cash received.

Used this way, the figures are a reasonable guide to the scale of the family’s holdings, but they are not a personal bank balance.
