In September 2023, Velocity Frequent Flyer members could redeem 79,999 Velocity Points for a Virgin Voyages cruise that was promoted as the first cash-free voyage in a points offer. That offer is historical. Virgin Australia’s official points redemption information does not list Virgin Voyages cruises, so the 79,999-point price should not be treated as a current booking option.
What the 2023 offer was
PerthNow reported on 24 September 2023 that Velocity points would secure a place on what it described as the first-ever cash-free Virgin Voyages sailing. The cruise was priced at 79,999 points. According to the report, the inclusions were:
- Michelin-inspired food
- Drinks
- Entertainment
- Fitness classes
- Wi-Fi
The report quoted Nick Rohrlach, then identified as Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO: “We are a loyalty program that stands for incredible value and choice and we are excited to welcome Virgin Voyages into the Velocity family with our first-ever cruise for Points offer.” That statement reflects the announcement at the time and should be read as a 2023 position, not a current one.
What the 2023 report does not establish
The report does not give the terms a booking decision would need. It does not state the sailing date, cabin category, taxes and fees, the booking process, availability limits, or cancellation and change conditions. “Cash-free” was the report’s promotional framing. It does not show that port travel, gratuities or other extras were covered, so readers should not assume the points price was the full cost of the trip.

Four sources are relevant. They describe different things, and only the first is a current description of what a Virgin Voyages cruise includes.

No source reviewed for this article confirms a current Virgin Voyages points redemption. Use the following steps before relying on any points price for a cruise.

- Open Virgin Australia’s points redemption page and check the redemption categories it lists. If Virgin Voyages cruises are absent, do not assume a points price applies.
- Check Velocity Frequent Flyer’s own member site for current partner offers. Compare any offer you find against the 2023 terms described above, not against the 79,999-point figure.
- Open the Virgin Voyages booking page for the specific sailing you want and confirm whether a points payment option appears for that date and cabin.
- If a points price appears, record the total points, the cash due, the sailing dates, the cabin category, and the cancellation and change terms before you commit.
- If the terms are unclear, ask Velocity or Virgin Australia customer service to confirm them in writing.
How to judge a points cruise against a cash booking
A points price is only useful when you compare it with the full cost of the same trip. The comparison should include everything that changes the total outlay:
- Total cost: points plus any cash due, including taxes and fees.
- Trip extras: getting to and from the port, gratuities, and any drinks or services outside the listed inclusions.
- Flexibility: cancellation and change rules, which can determine how much a points booking is worth if plans change.
- Opportunity cost: the points you would otherwise use on another redemption, such as a flight or upgrade.
For example, suppose a hypothetical sailing required 80,000 points plus A$500 in taxes and fees. Its cash-equivalent value would depend on what the same cabin costs for cash on the same dates, and on the value you place on the points. The result changes with every sailing, which is why the 2023 price cannot be carried forward.
