Vinted stopped accepting PayPal in France on 25 May 2023. That change prompted concern about scams, but the available sources do not establish that scam rates rose because of it. Buyers can still use Vinted’s in-platform checkout, which is the route tied to Vinted Buyer Protection; paying a seller directly or through an outside link is not covered by that protection.
What changed, and where?
On 25 May 2023, Vinted notified users in France that it no longer supported PayPal payments. The company confirmed the change to RTL the following day, saying payment options vary by market and French members had other ways to pay. Vinted did not give RTL a specific reason for removing PayPal.
This was a France-specific change, not evidence that PayPal disappeared from every Vinted market. Payment options can vary by country and account. Vinted’s current French payment page lists cards, Vinted Wallet, Apple Pay and Google Pay, while noting that not every option is available to every member. Apple Pay and Google Pay also depend on device and platform availability, so check the options shown at checkout.
Does the change mean scams increased?
No increase is established by the cited reporting or Vinted guidance. RTL reported that users were asking whether buying would become riskier, but concern is not proof that fraud became more common. The sources provide no comparative scam-rate, fraud-report or loss figures linking the PayPal change to an increase.

The practical risk to focus on is how a transaction is completed. A seller who asks you to leave Vinted to pay by bank transfer, payment link or another direct method is asking you to give up the platform’s Buyer Protection for that transaction.
How to keep Vinted Buyer Protection
- Start with the in-app or on-site Buy now flow. Complete payment through Vinted’s checkout rather than sending money separately to the seller.
- Keep messages on Vinted. Vinted’s safe-shopping guidance and community standards advise members not to move conversations or payments off-platform and to report suspicious requests, including requests for personal or financial information.
- Use the policy and deadline for your market. Vinted’s UK Buyer Protection page says buyers may be eligible for a refund if an item does not arrive, arrives damaged or is significantly not as described. It requires buyers to report the issue within two days of the relevant delivery or lost-order notification. That is the UK page’s rule; do not assume the same deadline applies in France or elsewhere without checking the local policy.
Vinted says off-platform payments are not covered by its Buyer Protection and that its support team may be unable to help with those transactions. If a request seems suspicious, stop before paying and report it through Vinted.

Vinted protection and PayPal protection are different
PayPal has a separate buyer-protection process for eligible PayPal transactions, governed by its Buyer Protection terms and dispute process. Eligibility depends on those terms; paying with PayPal is not an unconditional guarantee. Nor does using PayPal outside Vinted restore Vinted’s platform protection.
For a Vinted purchase, the safer choice is not to bypass checkout in the hope that another payment method will make the transaction risk-free. Use the protection route attached to the transaction you actually make, and read that service’s applicable rules if a problem occurs.

What Vinted’s later wallet rollout does—and does not—show
On 14 January 2026, Vinted Group announced a rollout of its own wallet through Vinted Pay in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. The announcement said Vinted would continue working with other payment providers. It does not say that this rollout caused the earlier removal of PayPal in France or establish that the wallet was available there.
Because payment options and claim procedures can differ by market and change over time, check the payment choices displayed in your own Vinted checkout and the current local help page before buying. Do not follow an outside payment request if you want Vinted’s Buyer Protection.
