The startup behind the pace-based running shoes is Vimazi, a Portland-based company. The “getting ready to launch” framing comes from a 2021 announcement: Vimazi said it was developing shoes tuned to running pace. Its current catalog lists pace- and use-labeled footwear, but neither the launch story nor the catalog establishes that pace matching improves performance.
What Vimazi means by shoes based on mile pace
Vimazi’s premise is that a runner’s pace changes the forces acting underfoot, and footwear can be designed around those differences. In a June 2021 GeekWire report, the company described midsoles it called “FastPods,” with heel and forefoot pads tuned separately for different pace zones. That is Vimazi’s design rationale, not independent proof of better cushioning, efficiency, or running outcomes. GeekWire’s 2021 report quoted co-founder and CEO Scott Tucker: “We discovered that because the forces under your foot change in this very precise way according to how fast you run, that we could use that to engineer a shoe that’s going to perform better.”
What was planned in 2021—and what the catalog lists now
The launch-era plan was six running-shoe models spanning paces from 4.5 to 30 minutes per mile, plus a walking-shoe range of 18 to 30 minutes per mile. GeekWire also reported a planned price of $160. These were figures in a 2021 launch plan, not a statement of current product lineup or pricing.
Vimazi’s official shop page, observed in October 2026, displays nine products. Its categories include road racing, tempo, easy and long running, trail running, and walking. Products, stock, and prices can differ by regional shop and change over time. For example, several products on Vimazi’s UK shop page were displayed at £225; that is regional catalog information, not a universal price. How to assess a pace-tuned shoe before buying
Pace is one possible way to sort shoes, but it should not replace checking whether a shoe suits your running and your foot. Use the pace label as a starting point, then compare the shoe with alternatives intended for the same activity and conditions.
- Intended use: Compare road racing with road racing, trail with trail, and walking with walking rather than treating every shoe as interchangeable.
- Target pace: Check the model’s stated pace range against the pace at which you expect to use it. A mile pace is a guide to intended use, not a guarantee of fit or performance.
- Fit and comfort: Assess the actual shoe on your foot; a pace label cannot determine whether its shape and feel suit you.
- Total cost and availability: Confirm the regional price, stock, shipping, and return terms before ordering. The 2021 planned $160 price should not be treated as today’s price.
- Evidence: Look for independent comparisons conducted under similar conditions. The sources describing Vimazi’s design and catalog do not provide a controlled comparison showing that pace matching beats other shoe-selection approaches.
What the launch story does—and does not—tell you
The 2021 GeekWire report said Vimazi had raised $600,000 in seed funding and quoted co-founder and chief marketing officer John Zilly saying, “There’s no reason all running shoes shouldn’t be tuned by pace in the future.” These details explain the original launch context and the company’s ambition; they do not establish the company’s current operating status or validate the product’s performance claims.
