An American couple’s reported 15-year plan aboard Villa Vie Odyssey involved about AUD $155,000 for their cabin and a further AUD $5,400 a month, according to a June 4, 2025 report. Those are figures for Johan Bodin and Lanette Canen’s arrangement—not a standard price for everyone considering life aboard the ship. Current Villa Vie listings describe different ownership and rental options, so the couple’s costs should not be treated as a current quote.
What the couple reportedly pays
Realestate.com.au reported that Johan Bodin and Lanette Canen, an American couple, paid about AUD $155,000 for their cabin and pay AUD $5,400 per month for an all-inclusive fee. The reported monthly charge covers meals, leisure activities and other ship services. The report does not establish that these amounts are available to new residents or apply to other cabin types or contracts. Realestate.com.au’s June 4, 2025 report quoted Bodin saying, “People think we’re rich but we’re not. It makes financial sense and we’re at the right age to do this. We’re curious people.”
How that compares with Villa Vie’s listed options
Villa Vie’s residency page, accessed October 8, 2026, advertises ownership for five years or life, flexible rental, and rent-to-own. Its current starting figures differ from the couple-specific report and are company listings, not an independent audit or guaranteed availability. Confirm the currency and the exact contract before relying on any price.
| Option | Current advertised starting point | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | From $59,999; monthly fees from $3,500 | Five-year or lifetime terms; verify cabin, currency, fees and contract details with Villa Vie. |
| Rental | From $3,499 per month | Flexible terms, with meals included; verify the specific inclusions and availability. |
| Rent-to-own | Not stated on the company listing | The option is described, but the listing does not establish its detailed costs or terms. |
| Bodin and Canen’s reported arrangement | About AUD $155,000 upfront plus AUD $5,400 per month | Reported for this couple in June 2025; not a general or current offer. |
These advertised figures are not directly interchangeable: they may reflect different plans, cabin categories, inclusions and contract terms. The company page does not establish protections such as transferability or resale rights. Review the actual agreement for fees, included meals, internet, housekeeping and medical services, as well as the duration and any exit or transfer conditions. Villa Vie’s residency options page is the place to check the live listing and request plan-specific terms.

What living aboard involves
Villa Vie describes Odyssey as a residential cruise ship. The operator says its continuous voyage began in Belfast on October 3, 2024. A long-term stay is therefore more than a cabin purchase: it commits residents to recurring costs and substantial time away from land-based routines, family and services. Before choosing a plan, consider how its duration, cabin category, included services and flexibility fit your finances and daily needs. Villa Vie’s ship page provides the operator’s description of the vessel and voyage.
- Build a full budget: Separate the upfront payment from recurring fees, and confirm what the monthly charge includes and what costs extra.
- Check the commitment: Compare the contract’s term and flexibility with how long you realistically want to live aboard.
- Understand the cabin rights: Ask whether the arrangement allows transfer or resale and what conditions apply; do not assume these rights from the word “ownership.”
- Plan for time ashore: Consider access to family, healthcare and other land-based services during an extended voyage.
Odyssey’s Belfast delay is historical context
The Associated Press reported that Odyssey, built in 1993 and acquired by Villa Vie in 2023, spent four months in Belfast for rudder and engine repair work before departing in October 2024. That is dated history, not evidence of the ship’s present condition or a prediction of future reliability. The AP account also captured the delay’s human side: Villa Vie chief executive Mikael Petterson joked about Belfast’s weather and food. The Associated Press report describes the delay and departure.
