The company said it expected to begin an oral Phase 3 obesity trial in the fourth quarter of 2026. Its two active Phase 3 VANQUISH trials were testing the injectable formulation. The oral drug’s Phase 2 results are promising, but they do not by themselves make VKTX a buy: investors still need to weigh clinical and commercial risks against the stock’s current valuation, which cannot be assessed from the dated share price available here.
Has oral VK2735 started Phase 3?
No. Viking’s October 6, 2026 announcement described a separate exploratory oral maintenance-dosing study—not the start of an oral Phase 3 trial. In its second-quarter update, the company said it expected to begin the oral obesity Phase 3 trial in Q4 2026. An expected start is not confirmation that a trial has begun.

The distinction matters because the company’s active Phase 3 VANQUISH studies evaluate weekly subcutaneous (injected) VK2735. The October oral study is designed to examine safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics in people transitioning from initial weekly injections to less-frequent or oral dosing. Body-weight changes are exploratory outcomes, not the primary basis for establishing the oral drug’s efficacy.

Thirteen-week weight changes
VENTURE-Oral was a randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-finding Phase 2 study of once-daily oral VK2735. It enrolled adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related comorbidity. Viking’s 2026 presentation reported these mean changes from baseline at Week 13:
#1 Best Overall
| Daily dose | Mean change in body weight at Week 13 |
|---|---|
| Placebo | −1.3% |
| 15 mg | −2.3% |
| 30 mg | −7.0% |
| 60 mg | −8.7% |
| 90 mg | −11.1% |
| 120 mg | −12.2% |
The company reported that doses above 15 mg were statistically superior to placebo. These are short-term Phase 2 results, not proof of long-term weight loss, Phase 3 success, regulatory approval or commercial viability. The presentation also reported gastrointestinal adverse events, including nausea, constipation, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as treatment discontinuations in some dose groups.
What the results do—and do not—tell investors
The dose-response pattern and the 12.2% mean reduction in the 120 mg group are encouraging early signals. But investors should not treat the highest-dose result as a forecast for routine use: a Phase 2 study is designed to inform further testing, and its duration, participants and conditions do not establish how the drug would perform in a larger, longer trial or in practice.
What is being tested in the injectable Phase 3 trials?
VANQUISH-1 and VANQUISH-2 are randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter studies of weekly subcutaneous VK2735 over 78 weeks. The populations differ:

- VANQUISH-1: Approximately 4,500 adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related comorbidity, without type 2 diabetes.
- VANQUISH-2: Approximately 1,000 adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity or overweight.
Each study evaluates weekly 7.5 mg, 12.5 mg or 17.5 mg VK2735 against placebo. These trials may provide longer-term evidence about the injectable formulation, but they are not the oral Phase 3 trial Viking expected to start in Q4 2026.
What do the maintenance findings mean?
Injectable maintenance results
In a separate exploratory study, participants first received weekly subcutaneous VK2735 for 21 weeks, then entered a 12-week phase with less-frequent dosing. Viking reported that participants moving to every-other-week regimens maintained up to 97% of the mean weight they had lost during induction; participants moved to monthly dosing maintained up to 90%.
Those figures are the proportion of previously lost weight retained—not additional weight-loss percentages. The study involved approximately 180 otherwise healthy adults with obesity. Its small size and short maintenance period make it an early signal, not evidence of long-term effectiveness or safety.

What the October oral maintenance study adds
The program’s second part, announced October 6, is planned to enroll approximately 195 adults with obesity. Participants receive 21 weeks of initial weekly subcutaneous VK2735 or placebo, then transition through Week 33 to daily oral doses, weekly oral doses, monthly injections, every-other-week injections or placebo. Viking said it expects to report results in 2027. Because the stated objectives are safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics, with weight change exploratory, this study should not be mistaken for a confirmatory oral efficacy trial.

How do the clinical signals compare with other obesity drugs?
The figures above are not a head-to-head comparison with another medicine. Oral VK2735’s reported weight change comes from a 13-week Phase 2 dose-finding trial; the maintenance percentages come from a small exploratory study with a 12-week maintenance period; and the VANQUISH trials are 78-week Phase 3 studies of the injectable formulation. Comparing percentages across different trials can mislead because populations, treatment duration, comparator, dosing, titration and outcome definitions may differ.
A useful comparison with another obesity treatment would match at least the formulation and dosing frequency, trial phase and duration, participant population, placebo-adjusted weight change, proportions reaching specified weight-loss thresholds, adverse events and discontinuations, and evidence for maintaining weight loss. The information available here does not establish a matched head-to-head comparison for VK2735.

What do Viking’s finances mean for VKTX investors?
Cash, losses and new capital
At June 30, 2026, Viking reported $502 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments. It reported a $286.3 million net loss for the six months ended June 30, 2026. These figures show the scale of the company’s spending; they are not, on their own, a cash-runway estimate.
On September 28, 2026, Viking reported closing concurrent stock and convertible senior note offerings that generated approximately $575 million in gross proceeds and an estimated $547.8 million in net proceeds. The stock offering included 9,035,714 common shares sold at $35 per share. The company also issued $258.75 million principal amount of 2.00% convertible notes due 2032.
The trade-off for shareholders
The capital raises give Viking additional funding for development, but the equity offering adds shares and the notes are debt that may create future conversion-related dilution depending on their terms and circumstances. More financing can support trials without removing clinical, regulatory, manufacturing or commercial risks.

Is VKTX a buy now?
The clinical case is promising but still developing: oral Phase 2 produced substantial short-term mean weight reductions at higher doses, and the exploratory maintenance results suggest that less-frequent schedules merit further study. The oral formulation had not yet been verified as having entered Phase 3 by October 11, 2026, and the available maintenance evidence is limited in size and duration.
The investment case also depends on what an investor pays. A prospectus excerpt reported a last sale price of $40.85 per share on September 22, 2026. That is a historical quote, not an October 11 price. The information available here does not establish an October 11 share price, current market capitalization or valuation multiple, so it cannot show whether expectations for VK2735 are already reflected in VKTX.
A practical decision checklist
- Clinical evidence: Decide how much weight to give short Phase 2 and exploratory maintenance data versus the still-needed longer-term and confirmatory evidence.
- Milestones: Track whether the oral Phase 3 trial actually begins, what it tests and when results are expected; distinguish those milestones from the injectable VANQUISH trials and oral maintenance study.
- Safety and tolerability: Consider reported gastrointestinal events and discontinuations alongside efficacy, and look for fuller evidence from larger, longer studies.
- Funding and dilution: Factor in trial spending, the recent share issuance and convertible notes rather than treating the cash balance as a standalone runway forecast.
- Valuation: Use a current share price and current share count before deciding whether the potential upside justifies the risks. Do not use the September 22 quote as a current valuation.
- Portfolio risk: Treat a clinical-stage biotech as a high-uncertainty investment; a favorable trial outcome is not guaranteed, and failure or delay can materially change expectations.
Verdict: VK2735 gives Viking a credible clinical opportunity, but the oral drug had not yet reached verified Phase 3 testing as of October 11, 2026. Without a current valuation, the evidence supports a conditional watch-and-assess decision—not a blanket buy call. Any investor considering VKTX should first assess current pricing, milestone risk and the possibility of further dilution.
