Video-game venture funding showed a mixed picture in Q3 2024: Konvoy’s figures, reported by GamesBeat, put overall VC funding about 1% above Q2 while the number of deals fell 14% to 92. Growth-stage rounds were comparatively strong, but early-stage funding was at its lowest level since Q1 2020. Later reports point to larger funding totals in some datasets, not a uniform recovery for game studios.
What “stabilizing” meant in Q3 2024
In its October 16, 2024 report, GamesBeat relayed Konvoy Ventures’ finding that gaming VC funding rose approximately 1% quarter over quarter. A separate measure in the same report, private funding, reached $811 million, up 15% from Q2. These are not interchangeable totals: the report presents them as distinct funding measures.
Deal activity moved in the other direction. Konvoy counted 92 gaming VC deals in Q3, 14% fewer than in Q2. A nearly flat or modestly higher dollar total alongside fewer deals can reflect money concentrated in fewer rounds; it does not establish that the typical studio found fundraising easier. GamesBeat’s account of Konvoy’s Q3 2024 findings describes the figures and its stage labels.
Growth-stage funding outpaced early-stage funding
The clearest positive signal was in Series B–D, which GamesBeat identifies as growth stage. Konvoy reported $262 million in this category for Q3 2024, compared with a 2023 average of $159 million. Meanwhile, pre-seed through Series A funding was at its lowest level since Q1 2020.

The contrast matters for founders and investors: stronger growth-stage totals do not mean that new studios or companies trying to reach their first institutional round saw the same conditions. Nor does the reported quarter establish a durable trend; it is one quarter’s comparison with a 2023 average.
AI-related rounds took a larger share
Konvoy’s figures also show a shift in what attracted capital. Companies described as AI-related or referencing AI accounted for 22% of Q3 2024 funding, or $113 million, compared with 10%, or $52 million, in Q2. That category should not be read as funding exclusively for traditional game studios: the label can include gaming-related technology businesses as well as content companies.

Jason Chapman, managing partner at Konvoy, told GamesBeat in 2024: “We’re seeing encouraging signs of normalization in gaming VC funding over the past six quarters, despite macroeconomic challenges. The gaming industry continues to command and demand people’s time, proving its resilience. However, while the volume of AI-related gaming deals have grown, traditional content studios are facing compression in VC funding. Content alone doesn’t seem to be a strong fit for venture capital at this stage.” This is Chapman’s assessment of the market, not a conclusion established by the funding totals alone.
What later data says—and why it does not settle the question
Two later reports offer different views because they count different things. Crunchbase reported around $2 billion in gaming-related startup funding from seed through growth stage by September 24, 2026, already above its reported full-year 2025 total. Crunchbase said large AI-and-gaming rounds contributed substantially. This is a year-to-date estimate from that outlet’s dataset, not a reconciled industry-wide total. Crunchbase’s 2026 account provides its cutoff and framing.

S&P Global Market Intelligence, looking at video-game private-equity M&A and financing rounds, counted 208 deals in 2025, down 45% from 2024 and far below its 2021 count of 778. Its reported 2025 investment value of $55.92 billion is dominated by Electronic Arts’ $55.19 billion acquisition; without that transaction, S&P reported $842 million. Deal count and transaction value therefore tell sharply different stories in this dataset. These PE/M&A figures are not a direct continuation of Konvoy’s quarterly VC series. S&P Global’s 2025 deal analysis explains the transaction figures.
Why company type and geography matter
The European Commission’s Media Outlook 2025 describes private capital tightening after COVID amid slower consumption, geopolitical instability, inflation and higher interest rates. It says the downturn was most acute in 2023 and global private-market funding began recovering in 2024, while content development recovered more slowly than technology and platform businesses. In the EU, early investors’ return to growth-stage deals was seen as a safer strategy, but the report says this left some independent developers short of money to finish games.

Geography also changes the picture. In the European Commission and Technopolis Group’s compiled dataset, US video-game VC funding over 2020–2024 was more than three times the EU total. Within the EU dataset for 2015–2023, France attracted almost €2 billion, followed by Germany at €509 million, Sweden at €490 million, Finland at €439 million and Romania at €310 million. These are findings from a defined dataset built from Crunchbase and selected company records, not a universal census of all game investment. The European Commission’s Media Industry Outlook 2025 sets out the regional analysis and its context.

Before treating a reported increase as a recovery, check what is being counted. A venture round, an acquisition, a financing round involving a gaming technology provider and investment in a content studio are different events. The periods also differ: a single quarter, a year, and a year-to-date estimate cannot be compared as if they were one uninterrupted series.

- Look at deal count as well as dollars. A larger total can be driven by a small number of unusually large rounds or transactions.
- Check stage. Growth-stage strength can coexist with weak pre-seed and early-stage funding.
- Check company scope. “Gaming-related” can include AI, platforms and other technology businesses, not only studios making games.
- Check geography and data method. Regional datasets and commercial trackers may use different company definitions and coverage.
A 2026 peer-reviewed study by Ben Egliston offers a research lens rather than a live market tracker. Its selected sample includes 447 seed rounds with a reported value of $1.77 billion, along with 178 Series A and 56 Series B rounds. Because those counts describe the study’s sample and selection period, they should not be treated as market-wide stage shares. The paper discusses investor interest in scalability and emerging technologies. Egliston’s 2026 study provides the sample and argument.
