What the 2018 Andover video shows
New Atlas published its virtual-tour article on May 10, 2018. The footage focuses on a highly automated grocery warehouse: robots move containers from a three-storey storage grid to collection points, where items can be picked for customer orders. Watch the New Atlas tour.
The essential idea is that the robots bring stored goods to a picking area rather than having a person walk through rows of shelves to collect each item. The video documents the system at Andover in 2018; it should not be read as a current equipment count or performance report.
How Ocado’s automated fulfilment system works
Ocado describes its customer fulfilment centres (CFCs) as dense, three-dimensional storage grids holding grocery containers. A fleet of bots moves across the grid to retrieve containers and carry them to processing stations. Control software coordinates bot movement; at the stations, people or robotic equipment can handle picking and packing. The precise configuration can vary as the company’s platform evolves. Ocado Group’s technology overview explains the broader system.

What the robots do—and what they do not establish
- Retrieve and transport: bots bring containers from storage to a station where an order can be processed.
- Coordinate movement: software manages the bots’ movements across the grid.
- Support picking and packing: people or robotic systems may carry out work at the processing stations. The presence of warehouse robots does not mean every step is performed without people.
What Ocado says about Andover today
Ocado Logistics says the Andover site reopened in 2021 and is now home to over 1,000 robots. The company also says employees and robots together fulfil over 70,000 orders a week across the county. These are Ocado’s current site claims, published on its Andover page; they describe the later site, not the warehouse shown in the 2018 video. Ocado Logistics: Andover.
Current platform and fleet figures are not Andover measurements
Ocado Group’s current technology page says its bots can move at up to 4 m/s and that the control system communicates with each bot 10 times per second. It also says partners can pick 50-item orders in five minutes. These are company-published figures for its platform, not independent measurements of Andover or of the 2018 footage. Putting the warehouse figures in context
Ocado’s corporate history says its newer automated approach fulfilled a 50-item basket in 15 minutes, compared with about 70 minutes in a store-based environment. The company attributes that change to technology introduced at Andover and Erith in 2016–17. This is a company-reported historical comparison, not a current independently audited timing for the Andover site. Ocado Group’s corporate history.
