Lundin Mining described Filo del Sol as the largest greenfield copper discovery in 30 years; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently established ranking across all minerals. Vicuña is a planned development, not an operating mine.
Where is the Vicuña deposit?
Vicuña is a mineral district along the Chile–Argentina border. Lundin Mining identifies four known copper-gold deposits in the district, with Filo del Sol and Josemaria as the principal development focus. The deposits are about 10 kilometres apart. Two deposits, different geological settings
Josemaria is a large-scale copper-gold porphyry system in Argentina’s San Juan Province. The company’s project description envisions a conventional open-pit operation. Filo del Sol is a high-sulphidation epithermal copper-gold-silver deposit associated with a large porphyry system. Its upper oxidized portion has reached the pre-feasibility stage, while deeper sulphide mineralization remains a development target. These descriptions concern project geology and planning, not current production.
How much copper, gold and silver is in the Vicuña resource?
The February 2026 integrated technical study updated and superseded the earlier resource estimate. It is therefore the relevant current project reference; the older figures below should not be read as the current estimate. The May 2025 estimate, effective April 15, 2025, reported the following contained metal:

Resource categories are not the same as reserves
Measured and Indicated and Inferred are mineral-resource categories; they describe the confidence and geological basis of an estimate. They do not mean the metal is proved, economically mineable, or certain to be produced. A reserve is a different classification, and contained metal is not the same as recoverable output. The figures above must not be added to a production forecast or presented as a stock of refined metal.

What does “largest mineral find in 30 years” mean?
The broad headline wording can suggest a ranking across every mineral discovery. The available claim is narrower: in its May 2025 announcement, Lundin Mining called Filo del Sol “The largest greenfield copper discovery in the last 30 years.” The wording is company-attributed and specifically about a greenfield copper discovery. It does not establish that Vicuña is the largest discovery of any commodity, or that an independent body has ranked it first among all discoveries. Lundin Mining’s announcement
Any comparison with another find depends on what is being compared: a new greenfield discovery or an existing mining district; copper alone or a multi-metal resource; Measured and Indicated or Inferred resources; and contained metal or expected recoverable production. The available information does not establish an independent, cross-commodity ranking that supports the broadest reading of “largest mineral find.”

Is Vicuña producing metal yet?
No. The companies’ February 16, 2026 integrated technical study describes a staged development concept beginning with Josemaria and a sulphide mill. Lundin Mining says Vicuña does not currently have operations. The study’s projected average annual production over the first 25 full years and projected initial mine life exceeding 70 years are planning assumptions, not operating results or guarantees. A large mineral resource can indicate substantial geological potential, but it does not alone determine a project’s value or whether investors should expect a mine to be built. Resource classification, recoverability, project economics, capital needs, permitting and development decisions all matter. Vicuña’s resource figures and study projections are project information, not a personal-finance recommendation or a promise of future revenue.
