Net worth is assets minus liabilities at a point in time. A salary, book advance, or investment sale can help explain how wealth may have accumulated, but none of those figures alone shows a person’s current net worth.
What is behind the estimate?
Texas Rangers investment and sale
Celebrity Net Worth reports that Bush invested $606,302 in the Texas Rangers ownership group and received approximately $14.9 million when the team was sold in 1998. The site also describes an additional profit share for his role in assembling and managing the group. These are reported historical investment figures, not a measure of his wealth today.

Presidential salary
Under 3 U.S.C. §102, the president’s annual compensation is $400,000. Celebrity Net Worth calculates Bush’s gross base salary over two four-year terms as $3.2 million before taxes. The statute also provides a separate $50,000 official-duty expense allowance; that allowance is not gross income. Salary over eight years is one historical income stream, not a net-worth calculation.
Memoir and other post-presidential earnings
Celebrity Net Worth reports a $7 million advance for Bush’s memoir Decision Points and sales of more than two million copies. Those are secondary-source figures. An advance and copies sold do not reveal the author’s net proceeds after contractual terms, taxes, or other costs, and they should not be treated as additions to a current net-worth total. The source also discusses speaking revenue, but reported earnings do not establish how much remains as assets.
Why the $50 million figure is not a confirmed balance sheet
A reliable current net-worth figure would require a dated accounting of personal assets and liabilities. The sources reviewed do not provide that accounting for Bush. Celebrity Net Worth offers an estimate based on reported wealth sources, while the IRS Personal Wealth Study is a population-level statistical method, not a Bush-specific valuation.

Nor should personal net worth be conflated with Bush family wealth, government support for a former president’s office, or institutional funding for the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Celebrity Net Worth distinguishes official support and the center’s funding from Bush’s personal assets.

When you see a celebrity or public figure’s net-worth number, assess what it actually measures before treating it as fact:
- Source and date: Check who published the estimate and when it was updated.
- Evidence: Look for an explanation of the assets and income streams behind the figure.
- Assets and liabilities: A list of earnings or property is not a net-worth calculation unless debts and other liabilities are accounted for.
- Personal versus institutional wealth: Separate the individual’s holdings from family assets, government support, or organizations associated with the person.
- Independent corroboration: Similar figures do not amount to independent confirmation if the sources rely on the same unverified claims.
On those terms, $50 million is a widely repeated secondary estimate, but the reviewed sources do not substantiate it with a public, current balance sheet. Presidential records are subject to FOIA requests, and the George W. Bush Presidential Library says previously restricted records continue to be released on a rolling basis.
