On 3 September 2001, Viasystems announced that its Longbenton printed-circuit-board factory in North Tyneside would close, while its South Shields plant in South Tyneside would lose several hundred jobs. Contemporary reports put the initial total at roughly 850 to 875 positions, depending on the estimate used. South Shields was not simply shut at that point: after a receivership later that month, a management buy-out relaunched the operation as Circatex and reportedly safeguarded about 800 jobs.
What Viasystems announced on 3 September 2001
Viasystems, a US electronics contract manufacturer, operated two Tyneside facilities making printed circuit boards (PCBs). Its announcement involved two different actions:
- Longbenton, North Tyneside: the factory was marked for closure.
- South Shields, South Tyneside: the company announced a substantial workforce reduction, not an immediate full closure.
The distinction matters because headlines about “shutting the Tyneside plant” can make it sound as though both sites disappeared at once. The initial report concerned a complete Longbenton closure and redundancies at South Shields. EE Times described 550 jobs lost at Longbenton and 325 at South Shields, a combined 875. The Guardian and The Independent instead reported up to 525 at Longbenton and 325 at South Shields—about 850 in total.
How many jobs were affected?
There is no single uncontested total. The numbers changed between the announcement and the later receivership, and newspapers used different estimates.

| Report or stage | Longbenton | South Shields | Combined or status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial EE Times account | 550 | 325 | 875 |
| Guardian and Independent accounts | Up to 525 | 325 | About 850 |
| Later receivership report | 550 | 375 | 925 in that account |
| Further South Shields exposure reported during receivership | — | About 775 potentially at risk | Not a confirmed final loss |
The safest description is that the initial announcement put roughly 850–875 jobs at risk, comprising Longbenton’s closure and several hundred South Shields redundancies. Later reports described additional South Shields losses or positions at risk; those figures should not be added mechanically to the first total.
Why Viasystems cut capacity
Viasystems blamed a significant and continuing downturn in the global electronics market. The immediate weakness was concentrated in telecommunications and datacom equipment, major customers for the Tyneside PCB plants. The Guardian reported that about 70% of sales from the factories were tied to those two markets, where demand had collapsed after the technology boom.

PCBs from the sites served telecommunications, datacom, automotive, computing and consumer-electronics applications. When orders fell, Viasystems said it needed to close, consolidate and downsize facilities to bring capacity into line with expected demand. Its later corporate disclosures said four facilities were closed or consolidated during 2001 and that overall headcount fell by approximately 28.5%. The company’s SEC filing provides that wider restructuring context.
Reaction from unions, politicians and government
The Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) condemned the decision as a major blow to the North-East. Union representatives criticised what they saw as a knee-jerk response to a cyclical downturn and argued that electronics demand could recover.

- The reflow furnace is mainly for the production and maintenance of SMT products such as desktop solder reflow equipment.
- The product uses high efficiency far infrared heating elements and distributed thermocouple temperature measurement device.
- Through the microcomputer's precise control, the temperature of the reflow oven curve control can be more accurate, and the temperature of the reflow plane can be more uniform.
- The reflow furnace is fully able to adapt to a variety of different alloys and lead-free solder reflow requirements.
- Its temperature curve precision can be adjusted; in addition, this kind of equipment also has automatic fault detection alarm and other functions.
North Tyneside MP Stephen Byers called it a bleak day for jobs on Tyneside and said government agencies should help affected workers find employment. The Department of Trade and Industry asked the regional development agency to lead a tactical response group examining immediate needs, with retraining among the support expected in contemporary reports. The sources do not establish a guaranteed compensation payment for every redundant worker.
The Guardian also reported that the former owners had received £17 million in public funds and that the government was considering whether support could be recovered. That was a question under review, not a confirmed repayment.

- 【Flexible Feeding Options】Compatible with tape feeders, tray feeders, stick feeders, and loose components, providing maximum flexibility for various PCB assembly applications.
Receivership followed within three weeks
The situation deteriorated rapidly. On 24 September 2001, Viasystems Tyneside entered administrative receivership after a rescue package failed. KPMG Corporate Recovery was appointed administrative receiver and examined whether the business could be sold as a going concern. EE Times’ receivership report described further uncertainty over employment at South Shields, while Electronics Weekly reported a later figure of 375 South Shields job losses and warned that about 775 positions could be threatened.
Those developments were a separate stage from the 3 September announcement. The initial plan set out Longbenton’s closure and South Shields redundancies; receivership then put the continuing operation, assets and remaining jobs under review.

How South Shields survived as Circatex
South Shields ultimately had a second act. In December 2001, a management buy-out rescued the operation and created Circatex. The successor continued manufacturing multilayer printed circuit boards and reportedly safeguarded about 800 jobs. The management buy-out report also said employees were to receive a 30% stake in the new venture. Electronics Weekly covered the transaction.
“Safeguarded” does not mean every job announced at risk was restored, but it does show why describing South Shields as simply closed is inaccurate. Longbenton’s closure and South Shields’ eventual continuation were different outcomes.
What happened at Longbenton?
Longbenton was the Tyneside site consistently identified for closure in the initial coverage. Later regional data recorded the Viasystems Longbenton plant as a 2001 closure involving hundreds of job losses. The Tyne & Wear Profile 2003 listed that loss alongside other major regional manufacturing reductions.
Timeline
- 1996: Later trade coverage described Viasystems Tyneside as operating from South Shields and Longbenton.
- March 2000: The same coverage reported that European PCB Group bought the plants from Viasystems; this chronology is attributed to that later trade reporting.
- 3 September 2001: Viasystems announced Longbenton’s closure and several hundred redundancies at South Shields.
- 24 September 2001: Viasystems Tyneside entered administrative receivership and KPMG began examining options for the business.
- December 2001: A management buy-out relaunched South Shields as Circatex and reportedly safeguarded about 800 jobs.
Why the episode mattered in the North-East
The announcement landed during a difficult period for North-East manufacturing, where unemployment was already well above the national level. The regional profile grouped the Viasystems losses with job cuts in shipbuilding and aviation, while also recording Circatex as a new source of employment. The episode illustrates both the vulnerability of locally concentrated factories to global technology cycles and the possibility—when a viable customer base and management team remain—of preserving production through a change of ownership.
