Verizon confirmed a $4 monthly increase for each affected line on select older unlimited plans, effective March 1, 2024. The charge appeared on each customer’s next billing cycle. Verizon said customers could keep their existing plans and features, and that moving to a current myPlan was optional. This is a 2024 price change, not evidence of a new blanket increase announced in 2026.
Check the plan attached to every line, because the increase was not automatically applied to every line on an account. Verizon also said affected customers would receive 5 GB of additional premium mobile-hotspot data, although that benefit may be worth little to someone who rarely uses hotspot service.
What Verizon changed
- Amount: $4 per affected line each month, rather than $4 for the whole account.
- Effective date: March 1, 2024. The first bill showing it depended on the account’s billing cycle.
- Scope: Select older unlimited mobile plans, not every Verizon customer or every discontinued product.
- Plan change: Not required. Verizon said customers could remain on their plans and retain their existing features.
- Current myPlan pricing: Verizon said this particular increase did not apply to myPlan pricing.
On an account with four affected lines, the plan-charge increase would be $16 per month, or $192 per year, before taxes, surcharges, device payments, discounts and other charges. Verizon’s announcement is available in its community post.

How to check whether a line was affected
- Open your latest Verizon bill or the account’s plan-management page.
- Read the exact plan name assigned to each wireless line.
- Mark the lines that received a $4 notice or show the higher plan charge.
- Compare the first bill with the prior bill, separating the plan charge from taxes, fees, device payments and add-ons.
- Save a PDF or screenshot of the old plan’s benefits before making any change.
A family account can contain both affected legacy lines and unaffected newer lines. Verizon’s community discussion confirms that treatment can differ by line, so do not multiply $4 by the account’s total line count without checking each line.

What customers received for staying
Verizon said affected customers would receive 5 GB of additional premium mobile-hotspot data on top of their existing allowance. That is a stated plan benefit, not a guaranteed $4 monetary equivalent: it may be useful to a frequent hotspot user and irrelevant to someone who never uses hotspot data.
Keeping the plan generally preserves its existing benefits. Depending on the plan and account, those can include a Disney Bundle or another entertainment inclusion, a particular premium-data allowance, hotspot terms, international features, promotional pricing, or a grandfathered discount. Verizon’s announcement also described optional myPlan benefits involving services such as Disney+, Apple One, Netflix, Max and Walmart, but the service, price and configuration depend on the current offer. See Verizon’s current unlimited-plan information rather than assuming an old benefit has a direct replacement.

Stay on the legacy plan or switch?
The right comparison is your total monthly cost and the value of benefits you actually use—not the advertised base price alone.
| Category | Keep legacy plan | Move to a current plan |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | Adds $4 for each affected line | Uses the current plan’s base price and eligibility rules |
| Existing perks | Grandfathered features generally remain | May be lost, replaced or separately priced |
| Hotspot | Existing allowance plus Verizon’s stated 5 GB addition | Depends on the selected current plan |
| Plan flexibility | Retains legacy line combinations and terms | Provides the current add-on and plan structure |
| Discounts and promotions | May preserve account-specific pricing | May recalculate or remove existing discounts |
| Reversibility | No change is needed | Do not assume the old plan can be restored |
Staying can be better when
- You use an included entertainment bundle, international feature, premium-data allowance or hotspot allowance.
- A grandfathered discount or promotion is worth more than $4 per affected line.
- Only some lines are affected and changing the whole account would disturb useful line-by-line arrangements.
- Recreating the old benefits separately would cost more than the increase.
Switching can be better when
- The old plan’s perks are unused.
- Several affected lines make the cumulative increase significant.
- A current plan supplies comparable data and hotspot service at a lower all-in cost.
- You want current plan tiers or add-on flexibility and Verizon’s account-specific quote is genuinely cheaper after discounts and taxes.
Calculate the real cost before changing anything
- Record the legacy plan charge for each line after the $4 increase.
- Apply the actual Auto Pay and paperless-billing discount shown in your account.
- Add taxes and regulatory fees.
- Include device payments, tablet or watch financing and any other recurring charges.
- Value entertainment subscriptions, international service, premium data and hotspot capacity you would need to replace.
- Check loyalty, employer, military, nurse, teacher and other account discounts.
- Compare the final displayed total for the proposed plan, not a headline rate.
Archived 2024 prices should not be treated as current quotes. Verizon’s catalog has changed, and its current support hub lists options such as Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Ultimate. Use the current plan page and the comparison shown in your own account.

Device payments are a separate decision
The increase did not automatically cancel a phone-financing agreement or create a universal penalty-free right to leave. Verizon’s response treats the wireless plan and device-payment contract as separate matters; see its device-payoff discussion.
- Request the current payoff amount before porting out or paying off a phone.
- Confirm whether remaining promotional bill credits stop if you pay off early or leave Verizon.
- Check trade-in credits, line-specific discounts, tablet and watch financing, and bundled services.
- Do not assume that changing a plan preserves every device promotion.
For a disputed contract or legal question, review the governing terms and seek professional advice; the price increase alone does not establish one universal cancellation rule.
2026 context: use current information
Verizon’s lineup is different from its 2024 lineup. Verizon says Unlimited Ultimate 1.0 was retired on May 7, 2026, while current myPlan offerings remain available. The retirement notice is documented in the Unlimited Ultimate FAQ. Current plan pages may advertise price-lock features for some plans, but that should not be read backward as protection for every legacy plan or as protection from taxes, fees and add-ons.
Common billing surprises
- Only some lines increased: Mixed legacy and newer plans can produce different results on one account.
- The bill rose by more than $4: Check taxes, fees, device charges, add-ons and lost discounts.
- The named plan is missing: Use the exact label on the bill; Verizon may have renamed, retired or migrated it.
- A quote looks cheaper: Verify Auto Pay assumptions, taxes, perks and device charges.
- Disney or another bundle disappears: Treat the lost inclusion as a cost unless Verizon confirms an equivalent.
- An accidental change occurs: Ask Verizon whether restoration is possible, but do not assume reversibility.
Before you authorize a plan change
- Identify every affected line and the first bill showing the increase.
- List all legacy perks and the users who rely on them.
- Check device balances and remaining promotional credits.
- Price replacement subscriptions and international service.
- Ask Verizon whether changing one line alters account discounts or other lines.
- Save the old plan terms and the final quoted total.
- Approve the change only after the complete monthly amount is clear.
The Bottom Line
The increase is real but historical: Verizon set it at $4 per affected line beginning March 1, 2024, and did not require customers to switch plans. Staying is often sensible when legacy perks or discounts matter; switching is sensible only when a current plan reproduces what you need at a lower all-in cost.
