Verizon and AT&T differ most in plan choice, hotspot allowances, international features, and the coverage you can get at the places you use your phone. Verizon’s September 2026 comparison presents Simplicity as one flat-rate plan; AT&T offers several tiers. Neither carrier is the better choice everywhere, and advertised starting prices are not the same as a complete bill. Compare your address, line count, discounts, data use, and travel needs before switching.
How Verizon and AT&T structure their plans
Verizon’s comparison describes Simplicity as a single flat-rate plan, while AT&T offers a tiered lineup from Value 2.0 through Elite 2.0. The plans therefore do not line up as exact equivalents: a lower-priced tier may have substantially less hotspot data or fewer travel features than a higher tier.
Verizon’s comparison page, last reviewed September 24, 2026, says its comparison is current as of July 6, 2026. It lists the following one-line starting prices and hotspot allowances. These are source-reported figures, not a quote for every customer’s bill:
| Plan | One-line starting price | Listed hotspot allowance | Source and qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon Simplicity | $45/month with Auto Pay; $30/month with Verizon’s switch discount | 10 GB | Verizon comparison; taxes and fees are not included on most plans. Confirm discount eligibility and terms with Verizon. |
| AT&T Value 2.0 | $65/month | 3 GB | Verizon comparison; taxes and fees are not included on most plans. |
| AT&T Elite 2.0 | Not stated in the cited comparison | 250 GB | Verizon comparison. The source lists this hotspot allowance but does not establish a one-line starting price here. |
These prices are useful for identifying a starting point, not for deciding which carrier is cheaper for you. Multi-line discounts, Auto Pay, switching offers, eligibility, taxes, and fees can change the total. Ask each carrier for the full monthly cost for your exact number of lines and plan before comparing.

What to compare beyond the word “unlimited”
Hotspot data is a plan-specific allowance, and “unlimited” does not mean that phone data and hotspot data have identical limits or speed conditions. Verizon’s plan disclosures say speed management may apply under specified data-use and network-congestion conditions; hotspot speeds may also be reduced after plan-specific thresholds. Review the terms for the particular plan, rather than assuming one carrier’s allowance or speed policy applies across its whole lineup. Verizon’s important plan information was reviewed October 7, 2026.
Before choosing, estimate how much data you use on the phone itself and how much you share through hotspot. Then compare the exact plan tiers’ allowances and data-management rules. A plan with more hotspot data may be worth more to someone who works away from Wi-Fi than to someone who rarely tethers a device.

International features depend on your plan and destination
Verizon’s comparison lists Canada and Mexico roaming and satellite texting for Simplicity. For AT&T, it lists Canada and Mexico, Latin America, and more than 210 countries for Premium 2.0 and Elite; it also lists texting from the U.S. to more than 200 countries across the plans in the comparison. Those features vary by tier and destination, so check the exact allowance, eligible countries, and charges for your itinerary rather than treating international service as a carrier-wide feature. Verizon’s comparison page presents these details in its plan comparison.
Which carrier has better coverage where you live?
There is no established nationwide, like-for-like finding in the cited sources that Verizon or AT&T has better speed or reliability everywhere. AT&T says its 5G covers over 316 million people nationwide; its network page says the displayed approximate coverage reflects availability as of March 2025 and warns that actual coverage may vary and is not guaranteed. That is AT&T’s own coverage claim, not an independent head-to-head result. See AT&T’s wireless network information.

Check the places that matter to you—home, work, regular routes, and frequent destinations—rather than relying on a nationwide claim. The FCC’s National Broadband Map lets you compare reported providers, but it shows outdoor or in-vehicle 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage, not indoor coverage. The FCC updated its guidance on May 15, 2025. Use the map alongside each carrier’s coverage map, and consider a trial or another real-world check where available. FCC: How to Use the FCC’s National Broadband Map.
Satellite service is not yet a carrier-specific deciding factor
On May 14, 2026, AT&T announced that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon had an agreement in principle to form a satellite direct-to-device joint venture. The announcement said definitive agreements and customary closing conditions were still pending. Treat this as a proposed shared effort—not as an active Verizon or AT&T plan benefit. A practical way to choose between Verizon and AT&T
- Check coverage at your actual locations. Compare the FCC map and both carriers’ maps, then validate service indoors and along your regular routes where possible.
- Price the same household setup. Request the full monthly bill for your line count, including taxes and fees, Auto Pay requirements, multi-line discounts, and any switching offer you can actually use.
- Match data and hotspot terms to your use. Compare the precise plan tiers, hotspot allowances, and any speed-management thresholds—not just the word “unlimited.”
- Check travel destinations. Confirm the countries covered and the included allowances or charges on the exact plan you are considering.
- Confirm eligibility and compatibility. Verify that your device and chosen plan are supported and that you meet the conditions for any advertised discount before cancelling your current service.
The comparison’s typical-speed figures are Verizon’s presentation, not an independent test. The cited sources do not establish a neutral speed or reliability winner, so local coverage and your plan’s exact terms are more useful decision points than a generalized ranking.
