The route is part of a broader FLL expansion the airline says is intended to support travelers after Spirit Airlines shut down. JetBlue’s announcements show meaningful growth, but do not establish how much capacity Spirit removed or prove JetBlue will replace it.
What Colombia flights is JetBlue adding from Fort Lauderdale?
The new Barranquilla route adds a nonstop connection to a network that also includes Medellín and Cartagena. JetBlue said Cali service was scheduled to begin October 15, 2026; the announcements cited here establish that planned date, not that the service actually started.

For Barranquilla, “nonstop” means the FLL–BAQ flight travels without an intermediate stop. JetBlue executive Daniel Shurz described Fort Lauderdale as a growing connecting gateway, saying the service would connect Barranquilla customers to South Florida and destinations across the airline’s wider network. That is JetBlue’s account of the route’s purpose, not an independent assessment of demand or results.
Is JetBlue replacing Spirit at Fort Lauderdale?
JetBlue says its expansion is a response to Spirit Airlines’ shutdown, but the available announcements do not demonstrate that JetBlue is replacing Spirit in a measurable, one-for-one sense. They do not quantify Spirit’s lost FLL capacity, compare the airlines’ schedules or establish a change in market share. JetBlue president Marty St. George said in the airline’s May 2026 expansion announcement: “We’re stepping up for Fort Lauderdale to ensure the availability of air service in this market.”

That expansion announcement covered 11 new destinations and more flights on existing routes. JetBlue forecast nearly 130 daily FLL departures that summer, which it described as more than 75% above 2025. Those were company-reported expectations, not an independent count of flights actually operated.
How large is JetBlue’s Fort Lauderdale expansion?
JetBlue’s reported totals indicate growth, but the figures describe different dates and must be read as company statements or projections rather than independent measurements.

The July figures come from JetBlue’s largest-ever FLL schedule announcement. They show the scale the airline says it is pursuing, not how much of any former Spirit capacity it has replaced.

JetBlue exited Bogotá in June 2024. The Associated Press reported that the airline described Bogotá and other withdrawn markets as unprofitable. The later additions of Barranquilla and Cartagena growth, alongside planned Cali service, mark a different Colombia footprint; they do not establish the profitability of the newer routes or explain why the airline changed its network.

For travelers, the most concrete change is route availability: daily nonstop FLL–Barranquilla service is operating, Cartagena is scheduled daily year-round, and Cali had a published October 15 start date. JetBlue’s broader claims about supporting Fort Lauderdale describe its strategy; they should not be confused with evidence about fares, passenger demand, or the amount of capacity Spirit’s shutdown left behind.
