Venmo Purchase Protection: What It Covers and How to Use It

Venmo Purchase Protection applies only to eligible goods and services paid with the purchase option turned on. Here is what qualifies, what is excluded, how to open a dispute, and what sellers pay.

Yes, but only for certain payments. Venmo Purchase Protection applies when you pay for an eligible good or service, the payment is designated as a purchase, and the transaction meets Venmo’s eligibility terms. Tagging a payment as a purchase does not by itself guarantee coverage. The program is also not new in 2026: Venmo announced the goods-and-services option on June 28, 2021, and it has operated as an existing feature since then.

How the protection works

Venmo separates a “Purchase” from other payments. A purchase is a payment to a seller for a good or service. A gift, a charitable contribution, or a reimbursement to another person is a different category and is not treated as a purchase. Designating a payment this way is only the first condition. Venmo’s eligibility page states it plainly:

“Designating a transaction as a “Purchase” or for “Good and Services” does not mean that Purchase Protection automatically applies.”

Venmo’s own wording for the program is conditional. In its June 2021 announcement, Venmo said payments tagged for goods or services “will be eligible for coverage under Venmo’s Purchase Protection Program, meaning the buyer and seller may be covered if the transaction doesn’t go as expected.” The key word is “may.” Coverage depends on the transaction, not just the label.

Visa Virtual eGift Card
  • Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
  • When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
  • This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
  • Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

Turning on protection when you pay

The purchase option is set on the payment screen, and it is most commonly available when you pay a personal profile. Use this sequence:

  1. Confirm the recipient. Venmo’s buyer help describes the purchase toggle as appearing when a payment is sent to another personal profile. If you are buying from a business, Venmo advises using a Venmo-approved business account instead.
  2. Enter the amount and a note describing what you are buying.
  3. Turn on the purchase toggle. Venmo’s eligibility page names it “Turn on for purchases.” Labels can change, so look for the purchase or goods-and-services option on the screen if the wording differs.
  4. Check the item against the eligibility table below before you send the payment.
  5. Save the order confirmation, shipping details, and seller messages. You will need them if you open a dispute.

Venmo’s scam guidance summarizes the core rule: when you tag a payment to a personal profile as a purchase, payments for eligible items are covered by Purchase Protection, and you can contact Venmo afterward if something goes wrong. A payment sent without the tag does not get that route.

What qualifies and what does not

Venmo describes online items shipped to the buyer as often eligible. It also mentions certain intangible items, such as event tickets and hotel reservations, as examples. “Often” is the operative word. Venmo does not promise coverage for every shipment, ticket, or reservation.

Payment situation Venmo’s stated position
Online item shipped to you, paid to a personal profile with the purchase toggle on Often eligible, subject to the terms
Event tickets or a hotel reservation Named as intangible examples that may be eligible; not a guarantee
Payment sent without the purchase toggle turned on Common ineligible category
Item you collect in person or arrange to collect Common ineligible category; exception for in-person Venmo QR code transactions
Reimbursement to another person Ineligible
Vehicle Ineligible item
Real estate, recurring payments, or long-term rent Ineligible item
Financial product or investment Ineligible item
Gambling or entry-fee and prize activity Ineligible item
Donation Ineligible item
Gift card or prepaid card Ineligible item
Cryptocurrency, NFTs, or other digital assets Ineligible item
Payment to a business Listed as an ineligible category in the eligibility terms; Venmo separately points buyers to Venmo-approved business accounts for merchant purchases

For anything not listed, Venmo directs users to the current Venmo User Agreement and eligibility terms. Check those before paying an unusual payee or for an unusual item.

If something goes wrong

Venmo encourages buyers to work directly with the seller first. If the seller does not deliver and the transaction is eligible, open a dispute in the app:

  1. Open Venmo and select the transaction.
  2. Tap “Need Help?”
  3. Select the issue that applies.
  4. Provide the information requested and submit.

Venmo’s buyer help puts the outcome in these terms: “You can tap the toggle to let us know that you’re making a purchase, and your payment will be covered by the Venmo Purchase Protection Program if eligible.” Note the qualifier. The help material does not describe a refund timeline or a guaranteed payout, and the interface may change. Treat a dispute as a review process with an uncertain result, not a refund you can count on. Purchase Protection is a Venmo program with its own terms. It should not be assumed to work like a credit card chargeback.

Fees and what they mean for sellers

The fee figure most often quoted for this program comes from the June 28, 2021 PayPal Newsroom announcement. That announcement said the seller pays a fee of 1.9% of the transaction plus $0.10, deducted automatically from the amount sent. This is launch-era evidence. It has not been verified as Venmo’s current seller rate, so check Venmo’s current fee terms before pricing a sale.

Venmo’s seller help page, “Selling with Personal Profiles,” adds a refund detail: the fee is deducted when a sender intentionally tags a payment as a purchase, and it is not returned if the seller later refunds the buyer. The fee treatment is separate from whether a particular transaction qualifies for protection. The sources reviewed describe the seller-side fee; they do not establish a separate charge to buyers for the purchase tag.

Scam checks for buyers and sellers

For buyers

Venmo warns that scammers may send fake shipping details or screenshots as proof of payment or delivery. Do not rely on either. Confirm the seller’s identity and the transaction inside your own Venmo account, and keep the purchase inside the purchase-designated flow described above so that eligibility can be assessed later.

For sellers

Venmo warns about two patterns. A purported buyer may send a fake payment email, or may claim the money will appear only after you ship and upload tracking. Venmo states that this delayed-payment arrangement is not a feature it provides. Verify that funds have actually arrived in your Venmo account before you ship. Venmo’s help article “Can I use Venmo to buy or sell merchandise, goods, or services?” sets the boundaries for commercial use, and it is worth reading before you sell regularly.

Venmo’s scam guidance, titled “Common Scams on Venmo,” is the reference for the specific warning signs above.
