If Venmo tells you to try your balance or use a different bank account or card, the decline may have come from your bank or card issuer—or from Venmo’s automated security checks. Follow the exact error message first, then try Venmo’s suggested alternate payment methods. Neither option is guaranteed to work.
Why Venmo may decline a payment
Venmo identifies two broad possibilities: your bank or card issuer declined the transaction, or Venmo’s automated security checks flagged the payment. The message alone may not reveal which one occurred, and Venmo’s public guidance does not explain the security signals behind an individual decline. See Venmo’s Payment Declined help article.

Follow the error message
Read the full message in Venmo and follow any instructions it gives. If it directs you to contact your bank or card issuer, ask that institution about the declined transaction; an issuer decision may need to be addressed there.

Try your Venmo balance or another payment method
Venmo recommends adding money to your balance and paying with that balance, or selecting a different linked bank account or card. These are alternative troubleshooting paths, not guaranteed fixes, and Venmo does not publish comparative success rates for them.

If the error continues, Venmo advises trying the payment again later. Its public guidance does not specify a waiting period.

Contact Venmo Support if the issue remains
If following the message, changing the payment method, and trying again later do not resolve the decline, contact Venmo Support for help with the specific transaction.

What the message does—and does not—tell you
A prompt to use your balance or a different bank or card is a troubleshooting suggestion; by itself, it does not establish that your account is frozen or identify the cause of the decline. Venmo’s general help guidance cannot diagnose an individual payment. The issuer or Venmo Support may be able to advise you based on the transaction and account details.
