Firstrade may fit self-directed investors prioritizing its advertised $0 online commissions and $0 options contract fees; Interactive Brokers may fit investors who need its broader product and market capabilities or want to compare its plan-specific pricing. Neither headline settles the choice: your residence, products, order size, options activity, margin use and currency conversions all affect access and actual costs. Verify current terms for your country and account before deciding.

How the brokers differ

The clearest distinction is between Firstrade’s advertised zero-fee schedule for online trades and options contracts, and Interactive Brokers’ product- and plan-dependent pricing. Interactive Brokers offers Lite and Pro plans, with commissions that vary by instrument and possible product-specific charges. Firstrade’s advertised prices do not mean every transaction is free of regulatory, exchange or other charges.

On market access, Interactive Brokers’ fact sheet describes broad product and market capabilities. Firstrade highlights self-directed trading features that include extended and overnight sessions. These descriptions do not guarantee access to every product or session for every customer: eligibility can depend on residence, account type, product and approval.

Compare the costs that apply to your trading

Start with the transactions you expect to make, not a single advertised commission. Firstrade’s account page advertises $0 commissions for online trades, and its options page advertises $0 options contract fees. Options trading requires approval, and regulatory or other charges may still apply.

#1 Best Overall

Interactive Brokers’ commissions overview sets out Lite and Pro pricing structures and notes that charges can vary by product. To compare fairly, check the current schedule for the relevant instrument and plan rather than assuming a single rate applies across trades.

Make a like-for-like estimate using the details that drive your bill:

  • The securities and exchanges you trade, and the size and number of your orders.
  • Your monthly trading volume and, for options, the number of contracts and any applicable pass-through charges.
  • Whether you will borrow on margin or convert currencies, which can add costs beyond a trade commission.
  • Your account type and location, since terms and access can differ by jurisdiction.

Firstrade’s comparison page says its competitor price data was collected from published websites on January 9, 2026. That date describes the page’s comparison methodology, not a guarantee that the fees remain current. Check each broker’s live schedule before opening or moving an account.

Which broker is a better fit for options?

Firstrade is worth considering if the advertised $0 options contract fee is important to you. That figure is not the whole options decision: approval is required, and you should compare applicable regulatory and other charges, available strategies, approval levels and platform features.

Interactive Brokers’ costs depend on the plan and product. Compare the fees for your expected contracts under the applicable plan, along with the tools and access you need. The available information does not establish that one platform is easier to use or better for every options trader.

Market access and fractional shares

Interactive Brokers reports that 24,047 U.S., Canadian or European stocks or ETFs were eligible for fractional-share trading as of July 23, 2026. This is a dated, broker-reported eligibility figure—not a promise that every security or account holder qualifies. Its fact sheet also describes broad product and market capabilities.

Firstrade’s account information describes extended and overnight trading sessions. Confirm which securities, session hours and order types are available to you; the listed session feature alone does not establish that every security can be traded at all times or that one broker has superior tools.

If access to a particular exchange, fund, bond, currency or derivative matters, verify that exact product with the broker for your residence and account type. Broad descriptions are not a substitute for confirming your own eligibility.

Margin, cash and account eligibility

If you may borrow, compare current margin rates and balance tiers, maintenance requirements and liquidation rules. Rates can change, so use each broker’s live disclosures rather than relying on an old comparison. Firstrade warns that margin losses can exceed the amount deposited or require additional collateral. Borrowing magnifies risk as well as cost.

Before choosing, check residence requirements, eligible account types, funding methods, support availability and transfer conditions directly with the applicable broker entity. The terms available in one country should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

A practical way to choose

  1. Confirm eligibility. Check that the broker accepts customers in your country and supports the account type you intend to open.
  2. List what you will trade. Identify the securities, markets, options strategies and trading sessions you actually need, then confirm availability.
  3. Price realistic activity. Compare expected order sizes and volume, options contracts, pass-through charges, currency conversion and any margin borrowing under the current schedules.
  4. Assess the tools you will use. Compare the relevant desktop or mobile platform, order types and research features against specific needs rather than assuming a feature list proves usability.
  5. Recheck the terms before acting. Confirm current fees, account availability and transfer requirements for your jurisdiction before opening or moving an account.

What independent coverage adds

Kiplinger’s 2026 survey describes Interactive Brokers as especially strong in international-market access and includes Firstrade among firms with fee-free options contracts. Its platform information cutoff was May 31, 2026, so later changes may not be reflected. Those are editorial survey findings, not a substitute for checking current broker terms or whether a feature suits your needs.
