Venmo launched its cash back program, Venmo Stash, on November 10, 2025, attached to purchases made with the Venmo Debit Card. In April 2026 PayPal extended it to selected Venmo checkout purchases. The program has changed since launch, so the rates and triggers you read about depend on which date and source you are looking at. Here is how each version works and what to check before you count on a reward.
What launched and when
PayPal announced Venmo Stash on November 10, 2025. The launch release described curated bundles of brands and cash back on Venmo Debit Card purchases. Rewards were credited to the Venmo balance once a month. TechCrunch’s launch coverage matches the date and the original mechanics.

PayPal framed the program as a way to reward customers for using more Venmo products. Diego Scotti, PayPal’s General Manager of Consumer, said at launch: “Traditional rewards programs make customers work for points they may never use. Venmo Stash flips that model—rewarding spending and money management habits our customers have already built with Venmo.”
Two reward structures, two dates
The launch release and Venmo’s current debit card page describe different ways to reach higher rates. They should not be combined.

If you read a guide that says 5% requires direct deposit, it describes the launch version. If it says 5% requires $1,500 in monthly spend, it describes the current card page. Confirm which applies to your account in the app before relying on either.
How the current spend tiers work
Venmo’s current card page says the 1% rate is the default. Reaching a tier raises the rate going forward. Venmo’s help page says the higher rate does not apply retroactively to purchases made before you reached the tier. Earlier purchases stay at the rate that applied when you made them.

Qualifying spend is measured monthly. Purchases made with the debit card or Venmo checkout count, minus refunds and cancellations. Some transaction types, such as transfers, do not count toward the threshold. Because the monthly cap is $100, the most you can earn in a single month is $100 under the current published terms, regardless of how much you spend beyond the 5% tier.
Always-on cash back and the Everything store
Venmo’s always-on cash back help article describes rewards at Stash brands when you pay with the Venmo Debit Card or Venmo checkout. Enrolled customers can choose one “Everything store” from Amazon, Walmart, and Target, in addition to the other Stash brands in their bundle.

The help article says you must wait 30 days after switching before you can change your Everything store again. Plan your choice with that delay in mind, since you cannot correct a switch immediately.
The April 2026 checkout expansion
On April 15, 2026, PayPal announced that customers could earn up to 5% cash back when paying with Venmo at select merchants in their chosen bundle. The announcement listed Sephora, Ulta, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut among the new additions to Venmo’s merchant acceptance network.

The eligible merchant list changes over time. Treat the April announcement as a description of what was offered at that point, and check the current participating merchants in the app before you shop.

The Venmo User Agreement says Stash operates Bundle cash back and Offers programs. It also says eligibility criteria, merchants, and reward structures may change. Several conditions can affect a reward:

- Activation: Individual offers may require you to activate them before purchase.
- Offer limits: Offers may set a minimum purchase amount, a percentage or dollar limit, an expiration date, or limits on eligible payment methods.
- Refunds and returns: A refund or return can reduce or reverse a reward that was already credited.
- Account standing: Your account must be in good standing for rewards to be applied.
Cash back is not a guarantee on every purchase. Only spend at eligible Stash brands or on eligible offers earns the rate. Ordinary purchases at other merchants earn nothing extra.
Fees and the debit card
Venmo’s product page says the Venmo Debit Card has no monthly fee. Some ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals can still carry fees, and the ATM operator may charge its own fee. Cash back does not offset these costs, so factor them in if you withdraw cash often.
How to confirm your current terms
- Open the offer or bundle details in the Venmo app and read the listed rate, eligible brands, and expiration date.
- Check which tier your account has reached this month, and how much qualifying spend remains before the next tier.
- Look up the $100 monthly cap and confirm whether your bundle applies any other limit.
- Keep the purchase record in case a refund later reduces a credited reward.
Venmo can change eligibility, merchants, and rates without notice in the User Agreement’s terms, so the in-app offer terms on the day you buy are the controlling version.
