On June 4, 2025, Venmo added contactless tap-to-pay, automatic transfers, threshold-based reloads, and international purchases without foreign transaction fees to its Venmo Debit Card, and it widened where users could check out with Venmo. The headline’s comparison to Cash App rests on a single reported figure from Block’s first quarter of 2025, not on a current measure of either company. This article separates what launched in 2025 from the terms Venmo publishes today, and it flags which numbers are company claims.
What Venmo announced on June 4, 2025
TechCrunch’s report on the June 2025 announcement describes the card and checkout changes below. Venmo’s own announcement, a PDF released the same day, confirms the core features.

- Tap-to-pay: the Venmo Debit Card gained contactless payment at terminals.
- Automatic transfers: users could schedule transfers or set balance thresholds that trigger reloads of the Venmo balance from a linked bank account.
- International purchases: cardholders could make purchases abroad without foreign transaction fees, according to the announcement.
- Checkout expansion: Venmo said it was extending checkout to more retailers, including Domino’s, Instacart, TikTok Shop, and Uber.
Venmo’s announcement also said monthly active debit cardholders grew 40%. That is the company’s own figure for its own product, and it has not been independently verified.
Rewards then and now
The rewards terms are the part of this story most likely to be out of date. In June 2025, TechCrunch reported 15% cashback at selected merchants, naming Lyft, McDonald’s, Sephora, Walgreens, and Walmart. That was a merchant-specific offer for cardholders in that period, not a standing rate on all purchases.

|---|---|---|
| Headline cashback | 15% at selected merchants | 1% by default |
| Higher tier | Not described in the report | 2% after $250 in qualifying monthly spend |

| Monthly cap | Not described in the report | $100 per month |
| Conditions | Selected merchants | Subject to terms and exclusions, which Venmo says may change |
Do not describe the 15% merchant offer as the current standard. Check the Venmo Debit Card page for the rates, thresholds, and exclusions that apply to your account on the day you read it.
How the card works today

Spending and mobile wallets

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCash withdrawals and fees
Venmo says you can withdraw cash at MoneyPass ATMs under its stated terms. The card has no monthly fee, but some withdrawal methods may carry a fee. Check the withdrawal fee schedule before relying on cash access away from home.
Eligibility
The FAQ says the card is available to most users, which is not the same as all users. If the card does not appear in your account, eligibility rather than a bug is the likely explanation.

Business figures reported in 2025
TechCrunch’s June 2025 article gave these Venmo results. They are historical figures from the period it covered, and they are attributed to that report:
- Revenue up 20% year over year.
- Total payment volume up more than 50%.
- Monthly active accounts up 30%.
- Zelle payment volume exceeded $1 trillion in 2024, for comparison.
Metric definitions and reporting periods vary, so these numbers should not be compared directly with later figures from other sources.

Where Cash App fits in the comparison
The Cash App side of the headline comes from TechCrunch’s report that Block disclosed Q1 2025 Cash App gross profit of $1.38 billion, below its expectations, because consumers used the app less than anticipated. That is one reported quarter. It does not establish how Cash App performs today, and it does not show that Cash App’s results drove Venmo’s card changes.
No Cash App executive statement or independent analyst assessment was established for this comparison, so this article does not present one. A full current comparison of the two products would require same-period sourcing on fees, rewards, and availability, which is not covered here.

April 2026: expanded Stash rewards
In an April 15, 2026 announcement, Venmo said it had expanded Stash rewards and was moving from a peer-to-peer app toward a broader money-movement app. Alexis Sowa, Venmo General Manager, said: “Venmo has always been where money moves between people, and now it is where millions choose to spend, in-app, in-store, and on-the-go.” This is company messaging rather than an independent assessment.

May 2026: reimagined app experience
PayPal’s May 11, 2026 newsroom announcement described a reimagined Venmo app with tailored cashback offers, product suggestions, and spending-informed prompts. Those features were announced, but rollout details and availability by user were not specified in the sources reviewed. Treat them as announced, not guaranteed for your account.
Practical checks before you rely on these features
- Open the Venmo Debit Card page and confirm the current Stash rates, thresholds, and monthly cap.
- Read the exclusions before assuming a purchase earns a reward.
- Confirm the card is active in your account if you are outside the group the FAQ describes as eligible.
- Compare withdrawal fees for each cash-out method you plan to use.
- Treat company growth figures as Venmo’s or TechCrunch’s reporting, not as independent verification.
For primary sources, use the June 2025 Venmo announcement, the April 2026 Venmo announcement, and the May 2026 PayPal newsroom post.

The Bottom Line
Venmo’s June 2025 changes made its debit card more usable for everyday spending, with tap-to-pay, automated reloads, and fee-free international purchases. The rewards that drew attention in 2025 were time-limited merchant offers, while the current structure is a tiered Stash program with a monthly cap. The Cash App comparison is a single reported quarter from 2025 and should be read that way.
