You can find used SUVs with five-star safety ratings, but a trustworthy list of ten needs a check the available price sources do not provide: a verified NHTSA Overall Vehicle Score for each exact model year and configuration. Rather than imply that an IIHS award proves an NHTSA rating, use the candidates and dated price benchmarks below as a shortlist, then confirm the vehicle’s rating and condition before buying.
Prices vary by location, mileage, condition, and listing date. The figures here are benchmarks from sources updated in 2026—not promises that a particular SUV is available at that price.
What a five-star safety rating actually means
NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings assess frontal crash, side crash, and rollover resistance. The Overall Vehicle Score combines injury-risk measures from those categories; NHTSA describes five stars as indicating overall injury risk “much less than average.” It is a rating of a vehicle configuration, not a guarantee about a particular used car or its ability to prevent a crash. An IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ is a separate recognition based on IIHS tests. It is not interchangeable with an NHTSA five-star score. A model can appear on an IIHS/Consumer Reports recommended-vehicle list without that listing establishing a five-star NHTSA score for every model year, trim, or drivetrain.

NHTSA also cautions against treating star scores as a universal ranking: frontal and Overall Vehicle Scores may be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another. Rollover ratings can be compared across classes. A high star count can coexist with a separately identified safety concern.
Affordable candidates and dated price benchmarks
The following models are worth checking, not a certified list of ten five-star vehicles. The affordability figures come from two different kinds of price evidence: Black Book median retail estimates published by IIHS and Consumer Reports, and Cars.com median listing prices. Neither establishes the NHTSA score of a specific vehicle.

IIHS and Consumer Reports updated their safe-vehicle recommendations on May 27, 2026. Their listed prices are Black Book median retail estimates from April 2026, rounded to the nearest $100, for all trims of the earliest eligible model year. The list applies safety and usability criteria for young drivers; its prices are not current asking prices for an individual car.

Examples near a $10,000 budget
Cars.com’s April 29, 2026 article used listings from March 2026 and reported median list prices in the $9,000–$12,000 range for its selected SUVs. It reported the following examples:

Cars.com says it selected vehicles with above-average J.D. Power reliability scores and an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ for the listed model years. Dual-rating candidates under $20,000
An Associated Press report on Edmunds’ May 2026 picks says the selected used SUVs each earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award and an overall five-star NHTSA rating, and that clean examples with fewer than 60,000 miles can be found below $20,000. The captured article identifies these four model-year ranges:
- 2021–2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer
- 2019–2023 Hyundai Santa Fe
- 2018–2023 Mazda CX-5
- 2019–2023 Subaru Forester
The AP passage refers to five picks but names only four, so it does not support naming a fifth here. Treat these as candidates to verify by exact year and configuration in NHTSA’s database, and check local listings: “under $20,000” and “fewer than 60,000 miles” describe the reported availability, not a guarantee for every market or vehicle. How to verify a specific SUV before buying
- Match the NHTSA rating to the vehicle. Search the exact model year and model in NHTSA’s ratings database. Confirm the Overall Vehicle Score and check whether the rating applies to the car’s trim, drivetrain, and other listed configuration details. Do not transfer a score from a nearby year or a different version.
- Check the production date. Some recommendations apply only to vehicles built after a specified date because equipment or structural changes occurred during a model year. Compare the stated cutoff with the certification label, typically on or near the driver’s door.
- Confirm safety equipment on the actual trim. A model-year recommendation does not mean every trim has the same crash-avoidance features. For example, the Trailblazer years identified in the AP report did not include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard, though those features were optional; those features were unavailable on the Forester base trim. Check the vehicle’s equipment rather than relying on the model name.
- Check recalls by VIN or plate. Search for open recalls before purchase and ask whether recall repairs have been completed. NHTSA advises checking for new recalls periodically; an IIHS/Consumer Reports note recommends owners check about every six months.
- Inspect the car’s history and condition. Review maintenance, accident and title records, tires, airbags, and driver-assistance equipment. A crash-test rating does not tell you whether this individual vehicle has been maintained or repaired properly.
- Compare prices like for like. Distinguish a median retail estimate from a median listing price and both from a negotiated sale price. Compare local vehicles with similar model year, trim, mileage, condition, and history.
How to choose among the candidates
Start with the budget and the vehicle’s condition, then use safety ratings as a verification step rather than a shortcut. A roughly $10,000 purchase may mean an older SUV with more than 100,000 miles, as the Cars.com examples illustrate. A newer vehicle may cost more, but price alone does not establish that it is safer or better maintained.
