But compared with the March 2026 planting-intentions estimate, June was essentially unchanged: 95.343 million acres versus 95.338 million. USDA’s June 30 report is already published, so this is a result—not a forecast.
What the June Acreage Report showed
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported 95.3 million acres of corn planted in 2026, down 3% from 2025. At greater precision, USDA acreage estimates tabulated by Southern Ag Today show 95.343 million acres in June 2026 and 98.788 million in 2025, a decline of about 3.5%.
The answer depends on the comparison. The year-over-year figure shows fewer acres. The comparison with March intentions does not: June’s estimate was only 5,000 acres higher, approximately 0.005%.
How June compares with March and 2025
| Comparison | Corn acres | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| June 2026 planted estimate | 95.343 million | USDA’s June estimate of planted acres |
| March 2026 intentions | 95.338 million | June was 5,000 acres higher, effectively unchanged from March |
| 2025 planted acres | 98.788 million | June 2026 was lower by 3.445 million acres, about 3.5% |
The precise side-by-side figures are USDA acreage estimates tabulated by Adam Rabinowitz at Southern Ag Today; the comparison table reports acreage in thousands. NASS reported the rounded 95.3-million-acre estimate and 3% decline in its June 30, 2026 Acreage release.

Why the March and June numbers differ in purpose
March measures planting intentions
NASS’s March 31 Prospective Plantings report estimates what producers intend to plant before the main planting season is complete. Its 2026 corn estimate was 95.3 million acres, down 3% from 2025.
June estimates acres planted
NASS surveys farmers in March about intentions and in June about acres planted and expected for harvest. For the June 2026 estimate, it surveyed approximately 90,300 farm operators during the first two weeks of June. The June figure is therefore a more direct estimate of planting completed than March’s intentions, while still being a statistical estimate rather than a final count. NASS describes the timing and purpose of these surveys in its Crops and Stocks survey methods.

Before the June release, USDA’s Economic Research Service retained a 95.3-million-acre planted-area forecast and noted that the Acreage report could update it. The June estimate remained 95.3 million acres at one-decimal precision; the underlying comparison figures show the small difference from March. See the June 15, 2026 Feed Outlook.

For readers following crop markets or farm finances, “fewer acres” can describe two different comparisons. Versus 2025, the 2026 report indicates a substantial year-over-year reduction. Versus March, it indicates that the planted-area estimate barely changed. NASS notes that acreage statistics support market assessment and farm planning; the number alone does not establish the effect on prices, yields, production, or an individual farm’s finances.
