Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan you use UPI abroad? Sometimes—but only where the relevant UPI service is supported and your bank, app, account, and merchant are eligible. An international card is often a useful alternative for overseas purchases and, subject to applicable rules and issuer terms, cash withdrawals. Mobile wallets depend on their own country and merchant coverage. There is no universal fee or security winner: check the terms for your actual providers and carry a backup payment method.
Does UPI work abroad?
UPI is not accepted at every overseas merchant or QR code. The Government of India’s 2026 factsheet says UPI is live in 11 foreign countries for “UPI Acceptance and/or Cross Border Remittances.” That wording combines different services: a remittance link does not mean a traveller can pay merchants throughout that country by scanning a UPI QR code. The factsheet gives Cambodia as an acceptance example, and Greece and the Maldives as remittance examples.
Even where an acceptance arrangement exists, availability can depend on the particular merchant, local payment arrangement, bank, app, and account. A country being listed is not a guarantee that your payment will work at a specific till.
Check the destination and the merchant
- Look for current destination and country-code support from NPCI, your bank, and your UPI app.
- Ask the merchant whether it accepts UPI through an arrangement that works with your app. A generic QR code is not proof of UPI acceptance.
- Confirm any bank or app conditions before travelling, and do not assume that a remittance service is the same as in-person merchant payments.
Check your account and app eligibility
NPCI’s “UPI for NRIs” guidance says eligible NRE or NRO account holders may use supported UPI apps with an international mobile number when that number is linked to the bank account and the chosen app supports international numbers. Transactions remain subject to bank terms. This NRI facility is not a general overseas-merchant feature and does not establish that every Indian UPI app or account will work abroad.

How do UPI, cards, and mobile wallets compare?
| Payment method | Acceptance abroad | Fees and exchange costs | Cash access |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | Depends on supported country arrangements, merchant, bank, app, and account; the 2026 Government of India figure includes acceptance and/or remittances, not uniform QR acceptance. | Not stated as a like-for-like international schedule by NPCI or the Government of India material cited here; check your bank and app terms. | Do not assume a UPI merchant-payment arrangement provides cash withdrawals. |
| International debit or credit card | Can be used at overseas merchants where the card and merchant are supported, subject to issuer terms and applicable rules. | Not stated as a universal schedule in the RBI guidance cited here; check the issuer’s foreign-transaction, exchange-rate, and ATM terms. | RBI guidance describes international debit-card cash withdrawals overseas, subject to applicable rules and terms. Check current requirements with your issuer. |
| Mobile wallet | Depends on the specific wallet, destination, merchant, and how the wallet is funded. | Not stated as a general schedule; check wallet usage, funding, conversion, and cash-out terms. | Depends on the wallet and its local services; do not assume it offers cash access. |
RBI material describes international debit cards for overseas merchant payments and cash access, subject to foreign-exchange and transaction rules. Its notice also discusses international credit cards for permitted overseas expenses, but that guidance is dated and is not a complete statement of current rules. Check current RBI requirements and your issuer’s terms for your card and trip.
What fees should you compare?
Official materials cited here do not provide a current, like-for-like fee schedule across UPI, cards, and mobile wallets. The total cost depends on your home country, account or card product, app, destination, transaction currency, payment type, and provider terms, so avoid assuming that one category is always free or cheapest.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
- UPI: Check whether your bank or app charges for the relevant international transaction and how it handles currency conversion.
- Cards: Check the foreign-transaction fee, exchange-rate markup, and any ATM withdrawal or cash-advance charges. These can differ by card and issuer.
- Mobile wallets: Check how you add funds, whether card top-ups cost extra, what conversion rate applies, and whether cashing out is possible and subject to a fee.
- Merchant conversion: If a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, compare the displayed total with the local-currency option and your provider’s terms before approving.
For a meaningful estimate, compare the actual terms for the payment you plan to make—not a headline rate for a different card, wallet, currency, or country.
Which option is more secure?
NPCI says a UPI PIN is required to authorize a transaction and should not be shared. Its FAQ also says account details linked to a mobile number are retrieved in masked form and that the exchange takes place over secure banking networks. These are NPCI’s descriptions of UPI controls, not evidence that UPI is categorically safer than cards or every third-party wallet. The cited materials do not provide an equivalent method-by-method security assessment across those options.

How should you prepare before the trip?
- Confirm where you can pay. Check current NPCI country-code information and your bank’s and app’s support, then verify acceptance with merchants or local payment providers for the places you plan to visit.
- Confirm your eligibility. Check your account type, linked phone number, app support, and bank terms. If you are an NRI, verify the specific NRE/NRO and international-number conditions with your bank and app.
- Compare your own costs. Review the bank, card issuer, and wallet’s fees, conversion terms, and cash-withdrawal conditions. Check the amount shown at the terminal before approving a currency conversion.
- Carry a working backup. Keep an appropriate international card or another payment method separate from your primary phone or wallet. Confirm its overseas use and cash-access terms with the issuer.
Does UPI One World make UPI generally available to visitors?
No. NPCI’s February 2026 release described UPI One World as an event-bound pilot for delegates from more than 40 countries attending the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi from 16–20 February 2026. The service enabled merchant payments without an Indian mobile number or bank account, with the wallet loaded by an international debit or credit card. That specific pilot does not establish standing availability for all foreign visitors, nor does it show that travellers can use UPI at merchants abroad.
