“Up and coming” can mean a new manufacturer gaining traction, or a major automaker expanding into new markets. The companies below span both: several are established Chinese automakers, while Leapmotor is a newer electric-vehicle maker scaling through a major joint venture. This is a curated set of five companies supported by the available reporting—not a verified roster of the 13 implied by the original title. Their stories are useful to follow, but a growth headline is not a guarantee that a car is available in your country or that a company will meet its targets.
How to read this list
“Up and coming” is not a formal industry category. Here it means companies with evidence of vehicles, sales, production, or active overseas expansion. It does not mean all are startups or equally unfamiliar: BYD, for example, is already a prominent automaker. The evidence also differs by company. The Associated Press reported on several manufacturers’ international expansion in April 2025; Leapmotor’s delivery figures come from its own January 2026 release, while European sales-network and shipment figures come from Stellantis in May 2026.
For a car buyer, the important distinction is between an established home-market business expanding abroad, an automaker reporting rapid delivery growth, and a proposed factory or market entry that has not yet become a completed operation. None of the reporting below establishes current model availability in every country, so confirm local sales, servicing, warranty coverage, and applicable vehicle specifications before treating a company’s expansion as a purchasing option.
Five automakers with documented momentum
1. Great Wall Motors: a multi-brand maker with overseas production
Great Wall Motors (GWM) sells vehicles under several brands, including Haval, Wey, Ora, Poer, and Tank, according to the Associated Press’s April 2025 report. The same report described overseas factories in Russia, Thailand, and Brazil, as well as products such as the Poer hybrid pickup and Haval H6 hybrid SUV. This is an established manufacturer with a broad portfolio and manufacturing beyond its home market—not an unproven startup.

GWM chairman Wei Jianjun framed scale as a production-cost issue: “It is essential for volume to be big, otherwise the cost of production is too high,” the AP reported him saying at a media huddle. That is his view on manufacturing economics, not a universal rule for every automaker. Whether GWM’s brands or particular models are sold and supported locally depends on the country.
2. Chery Automobile: export growth across several brands
Chery’s portfolio includes Chery, Exeed, Omoda, and Jetour, and the AP reported the company was expanding overseas through sales and production. Chery reported 2.6 million overseas vehicle sales in 2024, according to the AP. The report also said Chery was targeting 3 million in 2025; that was a target, not a confirmed result in the cited reporting.

Chery should not be described as an EV-only business. The AP characterized it as selling more combustion-engine vehicles than electric vehicles. Its range and local availability can vary by market, so a brand’s presence abroad does not by itself establish that a specific model is offered where you live.
3. BYD: already a major automaker, still expanding internationally
BYD is better understood as a large, prominent automaker than as a little-known startup. The AP reported that BYD sold 3.52 million electric vehicles in China in 2024, a 28% year-over-year increase. That figure is specifically for China in 2024, not a global total or a 2025 result. The AP also highlighted BYD’s battery expertise and overseas expansion.

For readers tracking the company, the useful questions are where BYD is building a sustained sales and service presence and which models are actually approved and available in a particular market. International ambitions and domestic sales figures do not answer those local questions on their own.
4. Leapmotor: a newer EV maker scaling with Stellantis
Leapmotor was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Hangzhou, according to its January 5, 2026 company release. It says it works across electric-vehicle design, research and development, and manufacturing. The company reported 596,555 worldwide deliveries in 2025, up 103% from the previous year; those are company-reported figures, not independently audited results in the cited material.

The release named the B10 SUV, B01 sedan, Lafa5/B05, A10/B03X, and the future-facing D19 flagship. A model being named in a company release does not establish that it is on sale in a given country. Check local listings and the automaker’s country-specific site for current status.
Leapmotor’s overseas route is closely tied to Stellantis. Stellantis said it acquired an approximately 21% stake in Leapmotor in October 2023 and established Leapmotor International, a joint venture owned 51% by Stellantis and 49% by Leapmotor, with rights outside Greater China. In a May 8, 2026 announcement, Stellantis said the venture had more than 850 European sales and service points and shipped more than 40,000 vehicles in Europe in 2025. These are Stellantis-reported figures.

Stellantis’s announcement also discussed potential production at Spanish plants. That is a possibility under consideration, not evidence that production there has begun or is certain to proceed. The distinction matters: an established sales network or reported shipments describes activity; a potential factory describes a plan.
5. Geely: international ambitions, but limited detail here
The AP included Geely among Chinese automakers pursuing international growth. The cited reporting does not provide enough detail to support a fuller account of Geely’s current production, model range, or local availability. Its inclusion here is therefore narrower: it is a company identified in coverage of the broader expansion trend, not a model recommendation or a claim that a particular Geely vehicle is sold in your market.

A company’s overseas growth can take several forms, and they have different implications. Exports can bring vehicles into a market without local manufacturing. Overseas factories indicate production capacity in another country, but do not prove that every model is made there or sold nearby. A joint venture can provide a route to sales, service, or distribution, while a proposed facility remains forward-looking until construction and production are confirmed.
- Check operating maturity: distinguish reported deliveries and active operations from targets and future plans.
- Check geography: identify whether a figure refers to China, Europe, worldwide deliveries, or another defined market.
- Check the product mix: a company may sell combustion, hybrid, and battery-electric vehicles rather than fitting a single “EV maker” label.
- Check local ownership costs: verify the exact vehicle’s price, warranty, parts supply, charging or fuel needs, insurance, and service network in your country.
- Check the source of a growth number: company releases can provide useful operating updates, but attribute their figures and do not treat them as independent verification.
For a household considering a car purchase, a manufacturer’s expansion story is only background. The practical decision depends on a locally available model, total ownership costs, service access, and the terms offered in the buyer’s market. For investors, company growth figures are similarly only one input; the cited material does not establish profitability, valuation, or future returns.
