The highest-paying technology careers in 2025 were generally senior AI and software roles, research positions, engineering leadership, and specialized architecture jobs—not ordinary entry-level “tech jobs.” There is no single universal ranking: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage figures measure occupational wages, Levels.fyi emphasizes total compensation, and recruiting guides usually show starting base-salary expectations. The comparisons below keep those measures separate so you can judge both earning ceiling and realistic access.
What “highest paying” means
Base salary is fixed annual cash pay before bonuses, equity, commissions, or benefits. Total compensation generally adds bonuses, stock awards, signing bonuses, and sometimes retirement contributions. A public-sector or contract role may offer a lower total package but more predictable cash than an equity-heavy offer.

Levels.fyi’s 2025 U.S. report is primarily a total-compensation source. Its approximate medians were $155,000 for entry-level software engineers, $226,000 for software engineers, $312,000 for senior engineers, $457,000 for staff engineers, and $551,000 for principal engineers. These figures come from submitted compensation data and are influenced by large technology employers and high-cost markets; they are not guarantees. See Levels.fyi’s 2025 report.
BLS figures are standardized occupational wages and should not be compared directly with those equity-inclusive medians. Its May 2025 table reported mean annual wages of about $153,930 for computer and information research scientists, $144,440 for database architects, $139,580 for computer network architects, $139,850 for the broad software and web developers/programmers/testers category, and $132,510 for information security analysts. See the BLS May 2025 wage table.
#1 Best Overall
Finally, a compensation ceiling is not typical pay. Seniority, measurable impact, scarce expertise, employer, geography, equity value, and willingness to work on-call or in an office can matter as much as the job title. A technology occupation can exist in a bank, hospital, retailer, government agency, or software company; the employer’s industry and the work itself are separate concepts.

AI and computer-information research scientists
These scientists develop algorithms, machine-learning methods, computing systems, and original research. The BLS reports a May 2024 median wage of $140,910, with the highest-paid 10% above $232,120; in software publishing, the reported median was $237,990. Employment is projected to grow 20% from 2024 to 2034. Details are in the BLS occupation profile.
A master’s degree is commonly expected, and some research positions require a Ph.D., publications, or an equivalent record. “AI researcher” is not the same as every AI engineer: research emphasizes novel methods, while applied engineers usually integrate and operate models in products. A realistic route is advanced study or research-assistant work followed by published or demonstrable research.

Staff, principal, and distinguished software engineers
Senior individual contributors earn high compensation by influencing architecture and multiple teams, reducing infrastructure cost, improving reliability, or delivering revenue-critical systems. They can reach compensation comparable to managers without direct reports.
BLS reports a May 2024 median wage of $133,080 for software developers, with the top 10% above $211,450, and projects 15% growth for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers through 2034. See BLS software-developer data. Levels.fyi’s much higher staff and principal figures are total compensation at companies and levels represented in its submissions, not national salary averages.
To progress, build evidence of system design, incident ownership, mentoring, cross-team influence, and measurable business results. A strong portfolio can open some junior roles without a computer-science degree, but staff-level pay requires sustained impact.
Rank #3
AI and machine-learning engineers
Production AI engineers combine software engineering, statistics, model evaluation, data pipelines, distributed systems, cloud deployment, monitoring, and governance. Skills often include Python, linear algebra, probability, PyTorch, retrieval-augmented generation, and evaluation design. Candidates who can move a model from experiment to reliable service generally have more leverage than candidates who know theory but cannot operate systems.
Robert Half’s 2026 technology projections put the national midpoint starting salary for AI/ML engineers at $170,750, a 4.4% increase from its 2025 projection. This is a recruiting forecast for 2026, not realized 2025 pay; see Robert Half’s technology salary trends. “Prompt engineer” is not a consistently standardized, high-paying occupation; prompt work is often part of engineering, research, product, or operations.
Engineering managers and technology directors
Managers are paid for team outcomes, hiring, delivery, architecture, budgets, and organizational health. Equity can make packages very large at major technology companies, but one employer may pay a manager more than an individual contributor while another does the opposite. Management also brings performance reviews, personnel decisions, meetings, and less production coding. A staff-plus individual-contributor path is the main alternative.
Rank #4
Data scientists and data engineers
Data science ranges from product analytics to experimentation, causal inference, recommendation systems, risk modeling, and advanced machine learning. The BLS reports a May 2024 median of $112,590 and projects 33.5% employment growth from 2024 to 2034, one of the strongest rates in its projections. See the BLS projections overview.
Data engineers build the pipelines, storage, quality controls, and distributed systems that make analysis and AI possible. Their titles and pay are not standardized in the same way as BLS occupations, so evaluate the actual platform, scale, and on-call responsibilities rather than the label.

Robert Half’s 2026 guide gives cybersecurity engineers a $144,000 national midpoint starting salary and a high-end starting range of $190,750; these are recruiting benchmarks, not 2025 wage measurements. Incident response can involve on-call pressure, background checks, or security clearances. Certifications may help screening, but labs, scripting, networking, and judgment remain essential.
Cloud architects, SREs, and infrastructure engineers
These professionals design reliable, secure, cost-effective platforms. Useful capabilities include AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud; networking and identity; infrastructure as code; Kubernetes; observability; disaster recovery; and cost management. BLS’s architect categories are imperfect matches for modern cloud titles, but its May 2025 means—$139,580 for computer network architects and $144,440 for database architects—show the value of architecture work. Robert Half’s 2026 midpoint for network/cloud engineers was $132,000. Operational roles can include nights, weekends, and incident response.
Technical product managers
Technical PMs connect customer and revenue goals with engineering constraints. AI, cloud infrastructure, developer tools, and enterprise software can command premium scope, but titles differ sharply between startups and large companies. Pay depends on product responsibility, company stage, and leadership level. Robert Half describes the role and high-value product areas in its IT jobs guide. Product leadership offers influence without always requiring daily coding, but accountability is high and direct authority is limited.
Pay by career stage and education
- Entry level: Build fundamentals through internships, projects, QA automation, support, junior analysis, or development. Do not use staff-level compensation as an entry expectation.
- Mid-career: Specialize in distributed systems, cloud, security, data platforms, or applied AI and document measurable outcomes.
- Senior and staff: Increase scope across teams, architecture, reliability, and business impact. Equity often becomes a larger part of total compensation.
- Management: Move into people leadership when you can hire, coach, prioritize, and deliver through others; a graduate degree is usually less important than leadership evidence.
- Research: Computer and information research scientists typically need at least a master’s degree, although some federal roles accept a bachelor’s degree. See BLS education guidance.
Bachelor’s-degree-friendly routes include software development, information security, cloud and data engineering, DevOps, systems analysis, and technical product work. Certifications can support cloud or security screening but do not replace experience. A portfolio can substitute for formal credentials in some software hiring; research roles are much less likely to waive advanced academic or publication expectations.
Highest pay versus fastest growth
| Occupation | BLS projected growth, 2024–34 |
|---|---|
| Data scientists | 33.5% |
| Information security analysts | About 28.5%–29% |
| Computer and information research scientists | 19.7%–20% |
| Software developers | 15.8% |
| Computer systems analysts | 9% |
Growth measures expected employment expansion, not salary rank or ease of entry. A growing field can still be competitive, and a smaller research market can offer a higher ceiling. The projections come from the BLS overview and related occupation profiles.
Choosing a path by your goal
- Maximum ceiling: Staff/principal engineering, AI research, senior machine learning, engineering leadership, or high-scope product leadership. Expect selective hiring and years of evidence.
- Strongest growth: Data science, cybersecurity, AI/ML engineering, and software development.
- Career change: QA automation, data analyst-to-data scientist, systems analyst-to-cloud engineer, IT support-to-administration or security, or networking-to-cloud/security engineering.
- No graduate school: Software, cloud, cybersecurity, DevOps/SRE, data engineering, and technical product management.
- Predictable cash: Prefer transparent salary bands, higher base pay, smaller equity components, public-sector, or regulated-industry employers.
- Upside: Target public technology companies, AI startups, quantitative firms, strategic products, or senior roles with meaningful equity—but treat equity as uncertain and often multi-year.
- Individual-contributor work: Pursue staff-plus engineering, research, security architecture, or principal infrastructure roles instead of people management.
Skills that command a premium
Across 2025 compensation evidence and 2026 recruiting projections, valuable combinations include AI and machine learning, cloud architecture and security, software development, data analytics, distributed systems, cybersecurity, and cross-functional communication. Robert Half’s survey of more than 430 U.S. technology leaders highlights those skill groups in its technology salary research.
Quick Recap
- Pair model knowledge with production software, data infrastructure, evaluation, and governance.
- Pair cloud certification with networking, identity, automation, observability, and cost control.
- Pair security credentials with practical detection, application security, incident response, and threat modeling.
- Demonstrate system design, reliability, and measurable outcomes—not just course completion.
- Develop writing, negotiation, prioritization, and stakeholder skills as scope increases.
How to increase earning potential
- Choose a target scope: Decide whether you want research, production engineering, security, infrastructure, data, product, or management.
- Build proof: Ship projects, publish technical work, automate a real process, improve reliability, or show a measurable business result.
- Specialize deliberately: Scarce expertise in distributed systems, AI infrastructure, cloud security, application security, or experimentation can raise leverage.
- Use market data carefully: Compare the same geography, level, base-versus-total definition, and equity assumptions. Levels.fyi can help benchmark offers, but crowdsourced samples are not universal.
- Negotiate the whole package: Evaluate base, bonus, vesting schedule, refresh grants, severance, benefits, taxes, and liquidity—not only the headline number.
- Change scope or employer: Promotions, high-impact projects, and external offers can reset compensation more than annual percentage increases.
Why salary rankings can mislead
- Mixed metrics: BLS mean or median wages, Levels.fyi total compensation, and recruiter starting salaries measure different things.
- Sampling bias: Crowdsourced reports can overrepresent large companies, venture-backed employers, senior workers, high-cost cities, and people willing to submit data.
- Equity risk: Stock may vest over years, lose value, or be hard to sell. It is not equivalent to guaranteed cash.
- Geography: Housing, taxes, relocation, office attendance, and location-based pay adjustments change purchasing power. Levels.fyi provides geographic and cost-of-living analysis, but a nominal salary is not a universal lifestyle measure.
- Title ambiguity: “AI engineer,” “data scientist,” “cloud architect,” and “product manager” can describe materially different duties and levels.
- Executive outliers: CTO, CIO, chief AI officer, vice-president, and quant executive packages may be enormous but represent limited openings, not ordinary career salaries.
- AI expectations: AI increases the value of combined technical, domain, product, security, and communication skills; it does not automatically make every AI-labeled job highly paid.
