FAANG traditionally refers to Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google. In current corporate terms, those businesses are associated with Meta Platforms, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet. The acronym remains useful shorthand, but it is a historical label—not an official index, legal category or guaranteed investment strategy.
What does FAANG stand for?
The original letters mean:
| Letter | Original name | Current corporate name | Common ticker context | Businesses commonly associated with it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F | Meta Platforms, Inc. | META | Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, advertising, virtual and augmented reality, AI | |
| A | Amazon | Amazon.com, Inc. | AMZN | E-commerce, logistics, AWS cloud computing, advertising, streaming |
| A | Apple | Apple Inc. | AAPL | iPhone, Mac, iPad, wearables, software platforms and services |
| N | Netflix | Netflix, Inc. | NFLX | Subscription streaming, film and television production, advertising-supported streaming |
| G | Alphabet Inc. | GOOG and GOOGL | Search, advertising, YouTube, Android, cloud computing, AI and other technology ventures |
In the original acronym, “F” still means Facebook rather than Meta, and “G” means Google rather than Alphabet. Facebook’s parent company announced the Meta rebrand in October 2021. Alphabet became Google’s parent company in 2015; Google remains its consumer-facing brand and a major business. See NerdWallet’s explanation of the name changes and related acronyms.

How the acronym developed
From FANG to FAANG
FANG originally grouped Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google. Apple was added in 2017, creating FAANG. The second “A” distinguishes Amazon from Apple; it does not indicate a separate type of company. Kiplinger describes the historical addition of Apple.

Who coined the term?
Jim Cramer is widely credited with popularizing FANG and expanding it to FAANG. Some accounts also associate the early formulation with financial writer Bob Lang. It is more accurate to describe Cramer as a major popularizer than to present a single uncontested inventor. Fast Company outlines the competing origin accounts.

Why was Netflix included?
FAANG was never a formula that automatically selected the five largest technology companies. Netflix was viewed during the acronym’s rise as a fast-growing, disruptive internet business and a prominent growth stock. Its inclusion shows that membership was editorial and historical, not determined by a permanent market-capitalization cutoff.
Why was Apple added?
Apple brought enormous revenue, consumer reach and market influence to the technology-stock conversation. Adding it in 2017 reflected its importance to investors and the broader technology narrative, even though its hardware-and-services model differed from Netflix’s streaming model or Amazon’s commerce and cloud businesses.
Why FAANG remains in use despite the rebrands
FAANG persists because it is recognizable. It appears in investing commentary, technology journalism, recruiting discussions and everyday conversation. The word can carry three meanings:
Recommended Free Tools
- Historical: the original five-company acronym.
- Market: shorthand for influential, widely traded technology-related stocks.
- Career and cultural: a loose label for prestigious, selective technology employers.
None of these meanings is an official standard. No regulator, stock exchange or universal industry body defines FAANG membership.

FAANG compared with other technology labels
| Label | Typical membership or meaning | How it differs from FAANG |
|---|---|---|
| FAANG | Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google/Alphabet | Specific historical five-company shorthand |
| FANG | Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Netflix and Google/Alphabet | Earlier version that excludes Apple |
| FAAMG | Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google/Alphabet | Includes Microsoft and excludes Netflix |
| MAMAA | Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet | Proposed post-rebrand alternative that substitutes Microsoft for Netflix |
| Big Tech | Broad, flexible grouping of highly influential technology companies | Membership varies by writer and context |
| Big Five | Sometimes the same five companies as FAANG | Usage is inconsistent and may refer to other groups |
| Magnificent Seven | Generally Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla | Broader, market-oriented grouping |
| MANGO or MANGOS | Emerging AI-era media coinages | Not an established or universally accepted replacement |
MAMAA was proposed as an alternative, not an official replacement. The Magnificent Seven serves a different purpose by broadening the market group. 2025 and 2026 commentary has floated MANGO or MANGOS for AI-focused companies, but those names remain editorial experiments. See TechCrunch’s 2026 discussion and Axios’s 2025 coverage.
What “FAANG stocks” means to investors
“FAANG stocks” generally means the publicly traded shares associated with the five businesses: META, AMZN, AAPL, NFLX and Alphabet’s GOOG and GOOGL share classes. GOOG and GOOGL are two share classes of Alphabet, not two separate FAANG companies.
FAANG is not an index or fund
FAANG itself is not an exchange-created index, mutual fund, ETF, portfolio recommendation or performance guarantee. A product using “FANG” in its name can have a separate methodology and holdings. The NYSE FANG+ Index, for example, is a formal index with its own constituents; an index is not automatically an investable product.

The five companies have different revenue sources, regulations, competitive threats and financial profiles. Netflix is a streaming and content business; Apple sells devices and services; Amazon combines commerce, logistics, advertising and cloud computing; Meta relies heavily on advertising and develops immersive technologies; Alphabet spans search, advertising, cloud and AI. Their valuations, growth rates and sector classifications can diverge sharply.

- Check a fund’s current holdings, weighting method, fees and methodology rather than inferring them from its name.
- Recognize that holding several large technology stocks can create concentration and correlation risk.
- Do not treat historical outperformance or popularity as evidence of future returns.
- Review current filings, prices and tax implications before making an investment decision.
Broad products such as the Invesco QQQ ETF or Vanguard Information Technology ETF may include some companies associated with FAANG, but neither is a FAANG-only fund. Brokerage access through firms such as Fidelity or Charles Schwab does not turn a personal basket into an official FAANG product; account terms and available investments must be checked directly.
What FAANG means for jobs and careers
In a job listing or career discussion, “FAANG” usually means one of the five named companies or, more loosely, a large and prestigious technology employer with selective hiring and competitive compensation. It is not a job title, credential or certification.
“FAANG engineer” is not one job
A person described that way could work in software engineering, data, infrastructure, security, product management, design, sales, operations or another function. Hiring standards, pay, equity grants, interview processes, remote-work rules and workplace culture vary by company, role, level, location and hiring year.

People may informally call Microsoft, Nvidia, Uber, Salesforce, Stripe, OpenAI and other companies “FAANG-adjacent.” That phrase has no fixed membership. A job outside the five can offer broader responsibility, different products, better management or a better fit than a role carrying the FAANG label.

Compensation comparisons are meaningful only when they specify level, geography, cash versus equity, vesting schedule and refresh grants. Prestige also does not settle questions about work-life balance, layoffs, management quality or role scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is FAANG still accurate in 2026?
It is historically accurate and culturally useful, but not literally current in two names: Facebook is now Meta’s former name, and Google is a major Alphabet business rather than the public parent-company name. The acronym also does not capture every company that may dominate technology or markets at a given time. Use it to decode older and current commentary, then verify the specific companies, index methodology, market rankings or employment conditions being discussed.
Frequently asked questions
Is Facebook still part of FAANG?
Yes, in the historical sense. The “F” refers to Facebook, whose parent company is now Meta Platforms.
Is the “G” Google or Alphabet?
The original “G” means Google. Alphabet is the current parent company, with GOOG and GOOGL as commonly referenced share classes.
Best Value
Why is Microsoft not in FAANG?
Microsoft was not part of the original FANG formulation. It appears in later alternatives such as FAAMG and MAMAA; its omission from FAANG is historical, not a judgment about its importance.
Why is Netflix included?
Netflix was a highly visible, fast-growing internet and streaming company when the label gained popularity. The group was editorial, not a fixed ranking of the largest companies.
Is FAANG an ETF?
No. It is a descriptive grouping. Any ETF, note or index using related terminology has to be evaluated by its own holdings, methodology, fees and risks.
What does FAANG mean on a resume?
It usually signals experience at one of the five companies, but the employer, role, level and accomplishments should be named explicitly. FAANG is not a certification.
