Its FY2025 spending shows how heavily it invested in semiconductors, while its product launches and promotional spending show the parallel effort to compete for consumers. Those facts describe the company’s approach; they do not, by themselves, establish dominance across global markets.
What Samsung Electronics’ strategy is built around
Samsung Electronics is not simply a smartphone maker. Its portfolio spans finished products sold under its own brand and semiconductor components supplied to customers. That combination creates two distinct routes to growth: win demand for devices and systems, and develop or manufacture components for a broad range of uses.
The company describes its operations through two main divisions: Device eXperience (DX) and Device Solutions (DS). The FY2025 company profile identifies the businesses within each division as follows.
| Division | Main businesses described by Samsung Electronics | Customer and market role |
|---|---|---|
| Device eXperience (DX) | Smartphones, TVs, appliances, computers, and network systems; the 2025 Sustainability Report also lists Health & Medical Equipment | Finished products and systems sold into consumer and business markets |
| Device Solutions (DS) | Memory, Foundry, and System LSI | Semiconductor products and manufacturing services for component customers |
This structure matters because the two sides compete differently. DX depends on product design, software and features, brand appeal, distribution, and launches. DS depends on semiconductor technology, manufacturing capability, capacity, and customer demand. A strong result in one division does not automatically establish strength in the other.

Where Samsung allocated money in FY2025
Samsung Electronics’ 2026 AGM Reference Material reports KRW 52.7 trillion in FY2025 capital expenditure. Of that amount, KRW 47.5 trillion went to DS and KRW 2.8 trillion to Display. The figures indicate the scale and direction of reported investment, not the return it will earn.
| FY2025 spending measure | Reported amount | What the company material says it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Total capital expenditure | KRW 52.7 trillion | Samsung Electronics’ reported annual capex |
| DS capital expenditure | KRW 47.5 trillion | Investment in Device Solutions |
| Display capital expenditure | KRW 2.8 trillion | Investment in Display |
| R&D expenditure | KRW 37.7 trillion | FY2025 expenditure, described in the AGM material as the highest amount to date |
| Advertising and sales-promotion spending | KRW 14.2 trillion | FY2025 spending; Samsung attributed some of the increase to promotion of newly released smartphone models in the Mobile Business |
Samsung says its memory investment supported a transition to advanced processes and higher-value products, including HBM and high-density DDR5. It also described next-generation semiconductor R&D and infrastructure investment intended to secure cleanroom capacity in response to AI-related demand. These are management’s stated reasons for its allocation; the company materials do not establish what returns the investments will produce.

The R&D and promotion figures represent different strategic inputs. R&D is aimed at developing technology and products; advertising and sales promotion support market-facing launches. Neither spending figure alone proves that a product will succeed, that profitability will improve, or that market share will increase.
How the strategy connects chips, AI, and consumer products
Samsung’s FY2025 reporting described AI integration across a broad product lineup and highlighted the Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold7, and Galaxy Z Flip7. On the semiconductor side, it highlighted high-value products including HBM4 and DDR5. Together, those priorities show the company presenting AI as relevant to both its finished devices and its component business.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
That connection is strategically useful but not a guarantee of advantage. A feature appearing across a device lineup is evidence of a product direction, not proof that customers prefer it. Likewise, highlighting advanced memory products does not establish that Samsung will win the relevant orders or earn a particular return. The FY2025 reporting is Samsung’s account of its actions and priorities, rather than an independent assessment of their success.
How its global footprint supports the portfolio
Samsung Electronics’ 2025 Sustainability Report says it had 240 manufacturing sites, sales offices, R&D centers, design centers, and other locations worldwide at the end of 2024, with operations in 76 countries. These are dated company-reported footprint figures. They indicate international operating scale, but they do not measure sales, market share, profitability, or how effectively each location supports a business.

Does the evidence show global dominance?
“Global dominance” is a proposition to test, not a conclusion that follows from Samsung’s product range or investment totals. The reviewed company materials document the breadth of its divisions, reported spending, product priorities, and international footprint. They do not provide a complete, independently verified market-share comparison across smartphones, TVs, appliances, memory, foundry, and system chips.
For a financial reader, the useful distinction is between strategy and outcomes:
Best Value
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Strategy: what the company says it is investing in, building, and launching.
- Operating scale: reported spending and the size of its international footprint.
- Market outcomes: independently comparable evidence of sales, share, margins, and returns in each business.
The first two are visible in Samsung’s reporting. They should not be treated as substitutes for the third. The company’s FY2025 Business Report index identifies publication on April 30, 2026; market position and financial results should be assessed against relevant segment data and reporting periods rather than inferred from strategic announcements.
What to watch when assessing the strategy
Samsung’s approach is best assessed division by division, because consumer electronics and semiconductor supply have different customers, investment needs, and measures of success.
- For DX: assess whether new devices and AI features translate into customer demand and durable business results, rather than relying on launch activity or promotional spending alone.
- For DS: compare investment in memory, foundry, and System LSI with reported business outcomes. The FY2025 capex allocation shows where capital went, but not whether capacity or technology investments achieved their intended returns.
- Across the company: distinguish management’s statements about demand and strategic intent from independently established market outcomes, and keep the reporting period attached to each figure.
For a personal-finance reader considering Samsung as an investment, this evidence is a starting framework for evaluating the business, not a buy-or-sell conclusion. A complete investment assessment would also require financial performance, valuation, risks, and comparable market data beyond the company priorities summarized here.
